What is a Heresy?

- Today, it's quite common to hear someone use the word "heresy" or to call someone a "heretic." Unfortunately, more times than not, these words are often misunderstood. So, what is a heresy, and why should we be careful using it?

Thanks buddy you cleared it in such a simple way that I understood every bit of it. Now I'm more clear about what Heresy is all about. Actually I was after establishing the difference between Dissent and Heresy and now I've come to know that dissent is somehow very meager in nature as compared to Heresy. Thank you! Amen ✔
Excellent presentation.

The "Prosperity Gospel" that many Protestants seem highly enamored of seems to me rather heretical, and I am a Protestant.
@@servantsofchristministries7789 Well, Protestants hold to all kind of heretical beliefs: why only mention the Prosperity gospel? Is your gospel - whatever it is - any better in terms of lack of heresy?
It is, because Christ says not to put stock into earthly treasures but rather store or treasures in Heaven.
@@RomanusVII You cannot argue like that, my friend. Folks of the PG also know that verse and agree with it: they will just explain it differently. And they will present you other verses that seem to support the PG, which is exactly what I mean by we cannot argue like that. Protestants bring in any verse that suits their case and explain it in any way it suits them.
Is that truth, you believe? Or is that falsehood by definition, for different truths cannot all be true?? We should read the Early Church and go from there...
Anyway, I believe that you are a faithful child of Israel. I can be wrong, of course ;)
Pierre Schiffer God will not give you financial success without you working with the brain He have you. Saying the “lord will provide” with no real worth in your actions is heresy. PG preys on the poor and their desperation. It is heresy. It is disgusting. It must be purged.
Protestants use versus from the Bible to defend or attack Catholics and orthodox Christians versus are used to teach everybody a lesson so it is also about Protestants if they use it against Catholics.

Brother Casey you should do a Catholicism in focus on why you believe in God
I do agree that the term heresy is thrown around too much today, but there is an important clarification which needs to be made. Saying that XYZ person is a heretic is not saying that they are of a different religion/that they have denied the Christian faith. Looking at the section of Canon Law you quoted can help clear it up: "Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same" (to focus on some points in the definition--"post baptismal" [the person must first be a Christian in order to be a heretic] "denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith" [that is, it denies a particular something(s) which is taught by the Church as divinely revealed truth. Think the Magisterial Documents of the Popes and Ecumenical Councils, but not the entirety of the faith itself]. Heresy does not mean a repudiation of the faith, but a Christian rejecting part of what the Church teaches.) Some of those who would fall under this would be former Catholic Protestants (those who choose it for themselves, not those raised in it.) They generally reject the Church's teaching on justification (something to be believed with divine and catholic faith--per the Council of Trent), yet the Church even since the Council of Trent has always still called them "brothers" (that is, while they are heretics, they are still baptized Christians/our brothers in Christ--see the Letter of Cardinal Sadoleto to the City of Geneva)
The Canon continues: "apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith" (calling someone an apostate would be claiming that they are no longer of our religion/that they had rejected all of the Christian faith.) Some one who rejected all of the Christian faith (this would be where the basic truths like the Triune God, the Incarnation, et cetera would all be denied--a person could still believe in a Provident God like in Islam or certain forms of Deism while still rejecting those basic claims of Christianity) would be an Apostate, not a heretic.
And finally, "schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him." Best example would of course be the Eastern Churches--which have essentially the same theology as Rome (though expressed a little differently), but are not in communion with Rome.
Again, I agree that people use the term heresy/heretic too lightly, but it can not be seen as believing a person doesn't believe the Christian faith anymore, instead that they still are Christians but who are not believing the whole of the Church's teachings.
Not really people mostly say atheist other than heresy

My definition: "To know God and outright deny him full standing"
soooo ... who else is not actually christian and came here from a Warhammer 40k vid?
Can you direct us to a Church document that defines heresy as you do here, specifically that calling a person a heretic would be denying that the individual is not a Christian? Thank you.
To everyone who is interesting in the topic I recommend the book; "The Great Heresies" by Hillaire Belloc, at the introduction of the book he gives a clear definition of heresy.
How would I find a collect of Catholic dogma, preferably in pdf form?
Brother Casey, please consider making a video about souls in purgatory and what we can do for them. A week ago I had a dream about my grandmother in purgatory and ever since, I can't shake off the feeling that it wasn't just a dream, but that Lord allowed my grandma to reach out to me somehow.
@@clearjr1 Are interested in helping this person, or are you just interested in using her grief for her grandmother to snipe at the Church's doctrine of Purgatory?
@@clearjr1 The human way to address a person's suffering is to address that person's suffering, directly. Mockery of a person's religious beliefs, or lack thereof, is not how it's done. Mockery does little to alleviate suffering, even our own. In regard to our own suffering, mockery only buys us some time before we must inevitably face it.
@@clearjr1 So, when you come across another person's suffering, simply be present for them, as a person, in their suffering, in the moment. If you make fun of them or make fun of something they cherish you are not in the moment and not seeing them as a person. Rather, you are creating distance and seeing them only as an abstraction.
Can you make a video about being humble? I struggle with pride and I realized that pride is #1 deadliest sin! I need some practical tips and please pray for me. I've been praying the humility prayer, but I'm not sure if it's working. I need a lot of prayer warriors!!!! :/
i dont know if anyone will see this but would this mean that protestants that reject the Eucharist would be committing heresy?
The Franciscan Order and the Catholic Church generally have found a diamond in Br. Casey
I think there was some mixture of heresy and apostasy mentioned. Heresy is denying a doctrine ratified by the church. But great work!

QUESTION, i am a Christian, okay but is it heresy is I do believe majority of the teachings but disagree with something’s that aren’t super important now n days OR do believe that other religions hold some truth as well and were not 100% correct on everything or mention everything that has happened or is the truth?

Brother ,
That was SO well explained and the whole attitude or angle is like BOOM so on point - refreshingly level headed ..
Pretty funny even tho you’re not trying to be funny but yeah you can’t “ go around CASUALLY telling people they aren’t Christian
I was curious about it because of Warhammer and Dante’s Inferno. One of my CCD teachers said that it’s denying Christ after baptism. I have been thinking of as making a philosophy that is the complete polar opposite of an orthodox philosophy, like teaching good is bad, and bad is good. That and worshiping the supernatural forces of evil.
Heresy can be religions or cults that cause harm to others. And also self worshipping priests like our popes. :)

Guys, if someone doesn’t believe in any type of God is he a heretic? Or a normal person?
This wasn't a bad presentation but it didn't answer the question.
You should have started with the definition of the word, comes from the Greek "to choose ". One chooses what they will accept/believe, it may or may not be in accordance with orthodox teachings; it may be informal (accidental, mispoken) or formal. It may or may not lead to schism (in the case of groups) or apostasy (individual cases).
The schism, heresy, apostasy spectrum would make an interesting video.

I’ve always wondered if I would consider myself a heretic given the fact that I can have doubts in the Papacy between the east and the west.
Looking at Church history we know that the role of the Papacy grew over time. The east would claim that every bishop is the successor of Peter, that Rome was only first due to geopolitical reasons (look at canons of the ecumenical councils).
While we Catholics claim that the Pope is the sole successor of Peter, and the West always viewed Rome and other apostolic churches as something that was connected to the apostles themselves rather than geopolitical reasons.
There are Catholics who believe that the early church believed that every bishop is the successor of Peter (cyprian of Carthage is a famous example). But does this contradict the dogma on the Papacy that Rome is the sole successor of Peter.
I don't think that's heresy. Heresy is when you make one or more essential mistakes about the doctrine and from that you create and different doctrine. There are thoughts or ideas that can lead to heresy but I don't think what you are describing is heresy per se. I recommend you to read the encyclical SATIS COGNITUM by Pope Leo XIII
The Filioque is a deal breaker in my view. I was horrified to learn of this, as a Catholic and it has greatly shaken by allegiance to the Church of Rome.
Thanks. You are an inspiration.
what is the different between fish meat and other animal meat ?
But if a heresy is goign so far that you can no longer be called christian, does this mean that because protestantism is considered heresy it is considered non-christian? Same for orthodox churches

White text on a yellow background is difficult to read. Just a suggestion for future videos.
Is it heresy to not believe in purgatory? Belief in purgatory is a doctrine of the church, correct?
Where is the line between heresy and simply being a non-Christian, full stop? For example, should Mormonism be considered heretical, or simply not a Christian cult?
I've gone back and forth on this, and would like to see what y'all think.
Okay, what is lent and why does a person need confession if they eat meat on that friday
Lent is 40 days before Jesus enter Jerusalem. Basically getting us ready for Easter and when Jesus was sacrifice.
How do you defend the accusation that the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is Nestorian heresy. This is because there are prayers dedicated to the Sacred Heart. Instead of rendering one doxology and veneration, it renders two distinct doxologies and venerations (one to Christ Himself, the other to His heart)

So was Cornelius Jansen not a heretic? Jansenism was condemned, but his Augustinus was not published, much less condemned, until after his death. In fact, it is said that on his deathbed he gave his manuscript of Augustinus to a friend telling him if the Church disagreed with his treatise he would submit to their teaching authority.

The teachings of Martin Luther and the teachings of the English reformation is considered heretical, correct or ?
Not all of them.
Breaking In The Habit ah ok, but he was excommunicated though, I think? Right?
Yes. While some of his statements were actually very prophetic and true, some of them were highly problematic.
Breaking In The Habit ah I see, he is indeed a heretic then due to his excommunication; although I understand he had a deathbed confession which I find fascinating.
Would heresy just be sanctifying sin, like racism as racial pride? I got it from isaiah 5:20 “Woe unto those who confuse good with bad and bad with good, dark with light and light with dark, and sweet with sour and sour with sweet? Another example I have is what my dad told me. Christ’s teaching are like his bank account entrusted to his disciples to be used for good; but overtime, the bank account was misused, since the fall of Rome.
Why would we have to go to confession for something that’s not even biblical
A historian Cecil Roth, so very highly regarded in Hebrew circles, assures in his "history of maranos" an official publication of the tribal publishing house in Buenos Aires, in connection with the same events that even if there were honest converts, nevertheless the majority were in their innermost hearts just as tribal as previously.
In appearance they lived just as Christians, had their children baptized in Church, but hastened to efface the traces of the ceremony, as soon as they were back home again. They had themselves in order to render the marriage legitimate. They went often to confession, but their confession were so unreal that - so if said - a priest once begged one of them for a piece of clothing, of relic of such a pure soul.
Behind the outwardly concealment they remained what they always been.

Hello Casey, I converted to Catholicism in 1998. I experienced a real call to the Traditional Roman Liturgy, and a true affinity to the Church teachings prior to V2. I admirer your enthusiasm for the vocation you have chosen. The use of social media and the web is a great platform for evangelization. How do you reconcile the striking differences in the Church prior to V2 and the church as it is today? Have you ever thought about this? I would be interested to know your thoughts on this. Pax Christi. David
Hi brother Casey, I'm from Europe and I was wondering why do you and most friars and sisters only evangelise in already strongly christian areas, like the US or Italy, wouldn't it make more sense to do so in countries such as scandanavia or the middle east? Christians are persecuted in so many countries around the world, take copts in Egypt or people like Asia Bibi in Pakistan, folk in your position could try and spread the word in those areas.
Not sure if the good friar would reply, but I know first hand of many Friaries & convents in India, where I come from. Also, if you go to remote places of the country, where no government facilities may care to go, it is these brave friars & nuns who evangelize, provide medical assistance & education. I have seen Friaries in Christian persecuted regions like Indonesia too. I am sure they might have a presence in Pakistan. Incidentally, I live in the Middle East now, and guess who takes care of our parish: Franciscan Capuchin Friars :-)
@@mrg8guy That's good to hear, maybe it's just the euro bubble of friars and nuns, glad to hear thanks :D
Have a look at the work or Fra Ibrahim Alsabagh and the Franciscans in Aleppo.
sounds like the definition of apostate being applied to the term heretic
You use the word catholic and Christian interchangeably. I never thought of chatholosim as being part of the christian faith. Normaly a catholic would just say they are catholic not christian, maybe thats why i have this seperation in my head. I guess this is my question. Is Catholicism really a sect of christianity? I mean catholics believe their priests are divine, they worship saints and the virgin mary, they take communion etc.......... "christians" or i suppose my understanding of what a christian is, do not do any of these things. I am also not claiming to be an expert on the matter, I am genuinely curious.
