  • Today, it's quite common to hear someone use the word "heresy" or to call someone a "heretic." Unfortunately, more times than not, these words are often misunderstood. So, what is a heresy, and why should we be careful using it?

I do agree that the term heresy is thrown around too much today, but there is an important clarification which needs to be made. Saying that XYZ person is a heretic is not saying that they are of a different religion/that they have denied the Christian faith. Looking at the section of Canon Law you quoted can help clear it up: "Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same" (to focus on some points in the definition--"post baptismal" [the person must first be a Christian in order to be a heretic] "denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith" [that is, it denies a particular something(s) which is taught by the Church as divinely revealed truth. Think the Magisterial Documents of the Popes and Ecumenical Councils, but not the entirety of the faith itself]. Heresy does not mean a repudiation of the faith, but a Christian rejecting part of what the Church teaches.) Some of those who would fall under this would be former Catholic Protestants (those who choose it for themselves, not those raised in it.) They generally reject the Church's teaching on justification (something to be believed with divine and catholic faith--per the Council of Trent), yet the Church even since the Council of Trent has always still called them "brothers" (that is, while they are heretics, they are still baptized Christians/our brothers in Christ--see the Letter of Cardinal Sadoleto to the City of Geneva)
The Canon continues: "apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith" (calling someone an apostate would be claiming that they are no longer of our religion/that they had rejected all of the Christian faith.) Some one who rejected all of the Christian faith (this would be where the basic truths like the Triune God, the Incarnation, et cetera would all be denied--a person could still believe in a Provident God like in Islam or certain forms of Deism while still rejecting those basic claims of Christianity) would be an Apostate, not a heretic.
And finally, "schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him." Best example would of course be the Eastern Churches--which have essentially the same theology as Rome (though expressed a little differently), but are not in communion with Rome.
Again, I agree that people use the term heresy/heretic too lightly, but it can not be seen as believing a person doesn't believe the Christian faith anymore, instead that they still are Christians but who are not believing the whole of the Church's teachings.

You should have started with the definition of the word, comes from the Greek "to choose ". One chooses what they will accept/believe, it may or may not be in accordance with orthodox teachings; it may be informal (accidental, mispoken) or formal. It may or may not lead to schism (in the case of groups) or apostasy (individual cases).

I’ve always wondered if I would consider myself a heretic given the fact that I can have doubts in the Papacy between the east and the west.
Looking at Church history we know that the role of the Papacy grew over time. The east would claim that every bishop is the successor of Peter, that Rome was only first due to geopolitical reasons (look at canons of the ecumenical councils).
While we Catholics claim that the Pope is the sole successor of Peter, and the West always viewed Rome and other apostolic churches as something that was connected to the apostles themselves rather than geopolitical reasons.
There are Catholics who believe that the early church believed that every bishop is the successor of Peter (cyprian of Carthage is a famous example). But does this contradict the dogma on the Papacy that Rome is the sole successor of Peter.

So was Cornelius Jansen not a heretic? Jansenism was condemned, but his Augustinus was not published, much less condemned, until after his death. In fact, it is said that on his deathbed he gave his manuscript of Augustinus to a friend telling him if the Church disagreed with his treatise he would submit to their teaching authority.

Would heresy just be sanctifying sin, like racism as racial pride? I got it from isaiah 5:20 “Woe unto those who confuse good with bad and bad with good, dark with light and light with dark, and sweet with sour and sour with sweet? Another example I have is what my dad told me. Christ’s teaching are like his bank account entrusted to his disciples to be used for good; but overtime, the bank account was misused, since the fall of Rome.

A historian Cecil Roth, so very highly regarded in Hebrew circles, assures in his "history of maranos" an official publication of the tribal publishing house in Buenos Aires, in connection with the same events that even if there were honest converts, nevertheless the majority were in their innermost hearts just as tribal as previously.
In appearance they lived just as Christians, had their children baptized in Church, but hastened to efface the traces of the ceremony, as soon as they were back home again. They had themselves in order to render the marriage legitimate. They went often to confession, but their confession were so unreal that - so if said - a priest once begged one of them for a piece of clothing, of relic of such a pure soul.
Behind the outwardly concealment they remained what they always been.

Hello Casey, I converted to Catholicism in 1998. I experienced a real call to the Traditional Roman Liturgy, and a true affinity to the Church teachings prior to V2. I admirer your enthusiasm for the vocation you have chosen. The use of social media and the web is a great platform for evangelization. How do you reconcile the striking differences in the Church prior to V2 and the church as it is today? Have you ever thought about this? I would be interested to know your thoughts on this. Pax Christi. David

Hi brother Casey, I'm from Europe and I was wondering why do you and most friars and sisters only evangelise in already strongly christian areas, like the US or Italy, wouldn't it make more sense to do so in countries such as scandanavia or the middle east? Christians are persecuted in so many countries around the world, take copts in Egypt or people like Asia Bibi in Pakistan, folk in your position could try and spread the word in those areas.

Not sure if the good friar would reply, but I know first hand of many Friaries & convents in India, where I come from. Also, if you go to remote places of the country, where no government facilities may care to go, it is these brave friars & nuns who evangelize, provide medical assistance & education. I have seen Friaries in Christian persecuted regions like Indonesia too. I am sure they might have a presence in Pakistan. Incidentally, I live in the Middle East now, and guess who takes care of our parish: Franciscan Capuchin Friars :-)

You use the word catholic and Christian interchangeably. I never thought of chatholosim as being part of the christian faith. Normaly a catholic would just say they are catholic not christian, maybe thats why i have this seperation in my head. I guess this is my question. Is Catholicism really a sect of christianity? I mean catholics believe their priests are divine, they worship saints and the virgin mary, they take communion etc.......... "christians" or i suppose my understanding of what a christian is, do not do any of these things. I am also not claiming to be an expert on the matter, I am genuinely curious.
