It's unfortunate that Scarlet rejected him, BUT Banksy is getting the care and nutrition he needs (even if his new mom does treat him like a newborn!) and that's what matters.

I'm so sorry you and Banksy had to go through this. Years ago good friend's mare rejected her foal; it was so hard to work through and deal with. My full sympathy... I have fallen in love with Banksy through your videos. Please give him a hug and a kiss for me.

The right experienced broodmare is worth her weight in gold, I've been in these shoes and desperately miss "the old gray mare" who would beg, borrow or steal foals given half the chance. She was our go to when rejection occurred though we never went the hormone route with her, bucket training her adoptees instead. She never raised a bad kid, treating the ones she adopted no differently than the ones she foaled. Many owners don't give maidens a second chance when they reject and sadly I've known a few owners to euthanize a mare for the sin. Given a second chance many do well with their second foal though that is just my anecdotal observation.

His nurse mare is such a sweet girl, love how she keep trying to teach him to nurse.
Hope everyone remembers that this isn't your fault or Scarlets. It's just something that happens.
I do have question, will his nurse mom still require hormones to keep her acting and feeling motherly? Or is she good since she has accepted him now?

    • @highstandards6226
      @highstandards6226 Před 5 lety +5

She should be fine. Once he's nursing, what's removed will naturally stimulate replacement. One farm I worked at, two mares were turned out together with their foals, one foal was weaned before the other, that mare gradually worked the remaining foal into a corner and basically forced it to "take care of" HER bursting udder!
Boss took careful note, just in case there was ever a need for a nurse mare or auntie.😉 They're worth their weight in gold!

I’m so glad you had an experienced nurse mare at hand! This was obviously by far the best choice you could have made for both Banksy and Scarlett. It seems from the video that poor Banksy really isn’t used to affection from his momma, getting nervous when sweet Mickey tries to nuzzle him. It’s so wonderful that Mickey will give him the love (and FOOD) he deserves, and Scarlett can relax and enjoy her friends. I am really excited to watch their relationship grow! ❤️❤️❤️

Since Scarlet was a maiden mare, she didn't have the experience and Banksy being so muscular, large and independent as a foal, she didn't know how to handle him and probably got frustrated. Maiden mares are always a gamble. Good thing that Mikki was avaiable to take over. She had the size and most important, the experience in how to handle him. It's a shame he had to be weaned off Sarlet early, but you were able to find a worthy surrogate mom to take over, and everybody is okay, healthy and chilled. Good luck with him Shelby.

You did the right thing. The owners of a barn I boarded at lost a beautiful little paint filly to an aggressive broodmare. The mare was rejecting the filly for days, just like Scarlet. They didn’t pull the filly, in hopes they’d work it out. One morning they found the filly in a heap. The mare had kicked her so viscously the poor little thing had to be euthanized. It was heartbreaking.

It was the best decision for all involved regardless of the cost of hormone treatments. the last thing you would want is scarlett becoming "sour" and bansky being injured. You were incredibly lucky to have a foster mare there as finding such things when time is of the essence is next to impossible. the only thing i will say is that scarlett may do this again in the future, so it would be best to bare it in mind and prep ahead if the decision is made to breed her again.

Right decision. You couldn't let the mare kill the foal. That said, I am familiar with the hormone treatments used to turn a dry mare into a nurse mare and make her maternal towards a strange foal. What I have always wondered is what the response would be if the injections were used on the mare that is rejecting her foal. Would that work to make the real mother more maternal? Just wondering on that point as maternal response in a mare is controlled by oxytocin. I have tried to find references to treating mares rejecting their foals with oxytocin to see if it changed their behavior towards the foal. So far I have found zero.

I'm not sure but from what the vets said with his dam being so herdbound and food aggressive they didnt think the hormones would make enough of a difference longterm and we didnt want to inject her multiple times a day with them

@@Milestone-Equestrian Interesting. I was wondering because there is a video on YT from last year where an equine clinic in California lost a a mare brought in for colic, the mare having a California Chrome foal with her at the time. They had an older TB mare on site that was an experienced broodmare and they injected her with I believe oxytocin and something else - can't recall what now - walked the foal up to her, she sniffed it, then walked the foal out of sight from her. She started going nuts when the foal disappeared. They brought the foal back and within minutes the foal was nursing, she was nudging his butt and lovin' on him. The vet talked about their treatment protocol for such mares. It was very interesting. I knew they could now treat dry mares to use for nurse mares but I was shocked at how quickly it turned them from mildly interested to very maternal. In the case of a mare dying, yes, you have to use another mare. But it left me wondering if hormone treatment would work for mares that reject their foals and I haven't found any data on that. Thank you for your response. :-)

It’s so funny that he’s trying to be bossy towards his new mom 😂😂 my yearling still tries to cuddle up to his mom but she wants none of it.

Him trying to jump the fence is so scary. Many goals and yearlings die from injuries they sustain trying to jump fences when they’re scared. I’m so glad you guys were able to provide him a nurse mare.

His nurse made is just like, “No honey, banksy, this is where you drink milk.”
Banksy: “I know! I wasn’t born yesterday, mom!”

Rejection by mares can happen, and separating them is a wise choice. I helped raise an orphan foal,,,foal lac is awesome, and, you can have great success that way. Happy for you that you could try again, but he'll eat on his own, and you can grain feed as well. You are right not to expose him to unpredictable risks in mares. He is valuable! As are all of them!

Glad everything turned out okay in the end. Nice to see a healthy way to approach to social media as well :). Man Bansky will be a stunner when he grows up. He is already so stunning and he still is a foal

  • @wellhowboutthatmax2023

I think it was best decision for mum and bubs, obviously your preference would be the easier option for his mum to raise him, but you have had to intervene for the good of them both :) look forward to watching him grow and prosper!

Awww, I'm sorry you had to deal with this with your first foal. But it looks like you handled it, so you can get back to enjoying him and working with him the way you planned.
