FYI. The microphones in these smart devices can usually be triggered using specifically modulated light to induce a current in a certain way emulating the interaction of actual sound waves on the material. Smart tech devices often do not have lockout set by default, giving somebody an unlimited number of attempts to unlock and send commands. Cool story?
Some people leave their smart tech in line of sight from the outside, because why wouldn't they? Infrared light can be used. It takes only a few hours to brute force 4 digit codes. Certain smart tech such as... a smart garage unlock, can be accessed from other smart tech devices by design. Basically, smart tech is insecure as fuck in general. In this example, somebody could easily use your own smart tech to simply let themselves into your house and do whatever they need to do.

@@GrumpyGrebo in the study by Takeshi Sugawara, they used a 60 milliwatt laser, and this was without any obstructions, using near perfect conditions.
Assuming real life break-in conditions, you have glass, curtains, plants and maybe even a whole Bush in your way, making the hacking of smart-devices using this method near impossible unless you have a big ass laser.
In real life, you'd need one of two types of lasers: either a really powerful one to flood the entire device with light in order to trigger the microphone, or a less powerful one, in which case you have to angle the laser just right.
You can only use this method of attack if you have direct line of sight and if the device is angled correctly. If, like the google nest, the microphone is located at the back, you're fucked.
This method of hijacking smart devices is really impractical and obvious, especially since there are so many easier methods.
This also renders using any other light source for hacking useless since its still really obvious and impractical. Sitting around for hours until a smart device is hacked? A normal robbery takes, at most (from arrival to fleeing) 15 minutes. Sitting there for hours on end is extremely suspicious and your cover can easily be blown.
