  • Alphabet, a conglomerate that encompasses Google and Sidewalk Labs, is embarking on the creation of the world's inaugural smart city in Toronto, Canada. The initiative is geared towards furnishing technological solutions to enhance the lives of citizens. The smart city will be delineated into two primary zones: Quayside, situated along the shores of Lake Ontario, featuring residential, commercial, and office spaces, with Google's office being the first in the area, and the River District, spanning 152 acres and encompassing five neighborhoods around the Don River. The housing aspect of the project entails the construction of a series of new mixed-use buildings, reaching up to 30 stories in height, with an estimated cost of approximately 3.9 billion dollars. The construction will incorporate mass timber and modular components produced in a local factory owned by Sidewalk Labs. To facilitate mobility, the city will introduce a 1.2-billion-dollar light rail extension, connecting the neighborhoods to mass transit, thereby reducing the necessity for residents to own a car, and ensuring safety and affordability.
