    Old band geeks like myself with classical training always geeked on Rush because of their technical prowess, time sigs, elaborate compositions etc. Lyrically they cared nothing about mainstream which was refreshing. That they had immense success, celebrity, wealth - yet never let anything rise above the importance of the music - is testament to their longevity and has earned my lifetime respect. So great to hear your analysis on a deep technical level. Give us more. I can suggest deeper catalog cuts that will challenge you moreso if you wish. Many thanks!

    I really don't mind your pauses. Two reasons: You have a good enough sense of the music that the timing of the pause is not SUPER unwelcome; and you have very constructive commentary.

    That beautiful B Phrygian guitar solo section is such a great example of how melodically Alex plays/writes guitar solos. Very similarly to the first La Villa Strangiatio solo, he expertly handles phrasing and it's often overlooked. Great reaction, always love hearing a fellow musician's take on my favorite band!

    • @JoshCastillo

      Phrygian! I must admit that I don’t have much experience with modes but I understand the core principal behind them.
      But as for the phrasing and melodic approach, I couldn’t agree more! I have such respect for his approach. Thanks for your comment! I love having these types of conversations with fellow musicians as well!

      It's Canada's busiest airport, one of the busiest airports in the world at the time I believe. This song represents you trying to reach your flight in time fighting waves of people heading in the opposite direction. Reminds me of Megadeath, Dialectic Chaos.

    YYZ was written as a drum & bass track. Alex wasn't around, and Neil and Geddy wrote this amazing instrumental for just the two of them.
    When Alex heard it, he knew he wanted to be a part of it, so they added a guitar, but the "verse" section you noticed where Alex and Geddy play in unison arose because the melody was already done before Alex ever touched the song.

    Josh , you do a great job in your analysis. You make it educational and enjoyable at the same time. Rush is a perfect band for informed analysis as their music tends to be technically detailed. I appreciate reactors who give some musical insight and technical analysis to broaden my appreciation of the music even more. I am a proud member of the Rush nerds so I look forward to your Rush analysis. Another great song with a more reggae (The Police) vibe is "Vital Signs". Starting at about 5:35 ... here's the story. As others have commented, YYZ is the three-letter ICAO airport identifier code for Toronto Pearson International Airport. All three members of Rush grew up in the "Golden Horseshoe" region (Toronto-Hamilton-Niagara) and so Pearson was familiar to them all.
    Alex Lifeson obtained a private pilot license in the late 1970s, and eventually started flying the band around. One day on approach to Pearson, Alex set one of his radios to pick up Pearson's navigation signal. Back in the days before modern ATIS, airports broadcast their identifiers in Morse code, in this case -.-- -.-- --.. , and this pattern was clearly audible to not only Alex on the flight deck, but also to Neil Peart just behind it. Neil thought to himself, that would make a really awesome song, and within a few weeks the whole band had fleshed out that concept into a full song.
    It was released on the 1981 album "Moving Pictures," and the rest is history.

  • @thomasvarady1210
    @thomasvarady1210 Před 4 lety +1

    The “breakdown” part you described or synth part is what Neil described as being in the airport, with people reuniting with their families & others departing from them. He’s pure genius the way he illustrate a storyline associated with a musical mood.

    Great analysis - I love hearing the perspective of a trained musician. I remember having a fascination with odd time signatures after playing Mission Impossible theme back in HS marching band. Then I discovered Rush and said, “holy crap - these guys are making a living with odd time signatures!” Lol. I hope you continue your Rush journey. There are 40 years of masterpieces to explore. The Spirit of Radio and Limelight are a couple of great ones that are not too long, however, I’d love to see you listen to one of their multi-part epics like 2112. Cheers!

    Most people who arent musicians just like the melody or groove of a song without thinking about its structure. Musicians look at songs and analyze time signatures, Key changes, music theory, etc... I was a drummer in high school and college and i couldn't understand how some people could hear Rush and yet, not be impressed by their brilliance. I went to several of their concerts and they were mostly sausage fests. I remember seeing a guy at their R30 tour trying to console his trophy gf who was sitting and pouting with her arms crossed as the rest of the crowd were on their feet cheering along as they played a medley of early songs.

    you watched Xanadu from the '81 Exit Stage Left video and I think La Villa Strangiato, as well. The Xanadu video is where you noted the bell tree, and that he strikes the tubular bells correctly. I appreciate the reaction videos of yours I've watched--combining genuine reaction and appreciation with technical observation is rare. Although, I will have to state: if you appreciate the Rush songs that have thusfar been recommended to you, definitely check out the rest. As a long-time fan of Rush, it always frustrates me when people recommend the same three or four songs, over and over, when these incredible musicians have been awarded 24 gold, 14 platinum, and 3 multi-platinum albums--many of which display markedly different themes and style, but manage to still have the signature sound Rush is known for (and many songs don't necessarily feature Neil Peart going ham, but certainly display his incredibly talent in other ways). Check out 'Tai Shan' from the album 'Hold Your Fire', or 'Cygnus X-1 Book II' from Hemispheres, or any number of equally remarkable pieces of music often completely overlooked by some who choose not to delve past the same three or four songs Rush is widely popular for. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and reactions in your videos. Keep up the good work!

The "mini" length was do to Neils health issues on the tour...he was in pretty bad shape at that point...so He split his solo into 3 parts of 3 different songs. This ones on the song WHERES MY THING. Thank you very much for your kind words! I do it because you'd be surprised at how many people only want to come onto the channel and watch someone watch a video with no interruptions while they listen to song themselves lol.
      I don't really understand it, but I'm very happy that you enjoyed my video! Thanks again!

    A drum instructor who doesn't know shit about the timings of Morse signals, and still claims to know something about "YYZ".
    Ridiculous!

      What? I've been playing and teaching music for over 20 years, interacted with countless world class musicians and have never, ever come across the rule that says that percussionists have to know Morse code. I'm sure it's a fascinating case study though.
      Also, I've never claimed to know something about YYZ. I'm not a Rush fanatic like so many are and I freely admit that I don't know the ins and outs of every song that they play. All I comment on are things that I'm familiar with musically from my own interpretations and musical niche. That being said, have a great day Jerry!

      Hey Jerry, you know what man? I've been doing this for some time now and I can honestly say that you're one of, if not the only person who has completely earned my respect on this platform with your reply. There are very few like you out there and you should be proud of that. No harm done here, that's for sure. Thanks, and again, I hope you're having a great day!

    what Neal's playing is the morse code of Y Y Z....
    and im sorry if this offends you but if youre a drum instructor, how can you NOT have more experience with RUSH and Neal specifically?
    yes YYZ is the icao code for Pearson Intl Airport in Toronto

      Sorry if this offends you but that’s a very ignorant comment. And to answer your question, because Rush is not the only group of musicians making music and Neil is not the only drum set player on the planet.

      @@JoshCastillo not ignorant at all. I've been around music and musicians and tours of all manner of genres and I've NEVER heard of a drummer who has as little experience with RUSH or Neal. Hell my 90 year old dad, who's never played anything but harmonica, knows who Neal is...
      And you're right he's NOT the only set player, but he's known as the Professor for a reason.
      Let me know of the other well known drummers you're not familiar with. Ought to be an interesting list

    • @JoshCastillo
      @JoshCastillo  Před 4 lety +3

      Here’s my problem with people like you. It was an ignorant comment and let me tell you why. People like you tend to believe that their favorite drummers or bands and genre of music are the end all, be all of artists and music and that is simply not the case. You seem to believe that just because your life revolves around progressive rock, or rock in general that if someone is not familiar with that type of music, or the great artists of that genre that they are in some way inferior to you.
      Let me give you some examples. A lot of classical musicians are completely oblivious to the likes of Nikki Minaj or Drake and have never heard one of their songs or quite possibly even their names. I know this because I have friends whom are classical musicians. To the general population, that’s just crazy to even think about. As a matter of fact, judging by your comment I’d wager to say that even you couldn’t care less about who they are but they have millions of fans anyway.
      My life as a percussionist has revolved around many different aspects of music and yes I said percussionist because there’s a difference. In high school and shortly after, I spent my time listening to and watching Drumlines and Marching Bands because that was my life. That’s where I was learning. In college, my life revolved around listening and watching marimba solos and concert snare, timpani, and proper bass drum technique because that was my life. Not to mention scores of classical music for my music theory and countless interval training exercises. Because that was my life. And as for drum set playing, my life (except for a brief moment when I was like 12 or 13) did not revolve around progressive rock or rock drummers because as soon as I entered high school, it was all about Buddy Rich and Dave Weckl.
      My point is, the musical world is vast and just like there are millions of people, there are millions of interests and not everyone’s musical journey is going to be the same. As a matter of fact, it rarely is. And that’s ok.
