Actually, I don't like this cart. The wood mode I splitting is too weak at the crossbar lugs.

  • I challenged myself to design a fastened wood backyard roller coaster cart, in case students couldn't weld steel for a cart. This cart chassis weighs 30 pounds without any seat or body. It rolls easily on a 2% slope. I might think about testing this cart. Guessing at the weak spot, I did a stress analysis on the front bogie cross beam which predicted failure at a static equivalent cart load of 2050 pounds (930kg), way more load than the cart would experience with a 250 pound rider going through a 3g dip. I need to find a way to make the wood surface slippery where the aft overturning roll moments are reacted through bolts. I'm happy with the front bogie connection, which provides both yaw and roll freedom. I had to spend about 75USD on bolts, so the overall cost probably compares to the welded tubular steel carts I've designed and fabricated in the past.

To be clear, I would still favor tubular welded steel BYRC carts. It's hard to optimize wood, as the properties are quite variable. You need a lot of fasteners to overcome some of the very poor wood properties, particularly the down-grain splitting failure mode. If something like this introduces you to welding, so much the better. I thought about making it our of hardwood, which certainly would be stronger, but also expensive. This was more of a prototype.

Wood is solid 👌 for what ur doing specifically balanced out weight

Super interesting to see a wooden cart design capable of the freedoms this one has in a compact size. Haven't really seen anything like it

How do you get the wheels to turn?

You should post a video of it, I think people would enjoy it
