I do love an old school FPS and this one on paper at least, looks right up my alley. Lets find out! Mark
CZcamsr Civvie11 reviews old boomer shooters in-depth with snarky humour dialed up. Im sure he did this PC game justice even if the port didnt.
We need an hexen remastered on the switch
I'd love that. Mark
I spent so many after school hours having Hexen with all my friends.
Yes, please! That and Heretic would be nice too.
I'd love a Heretic 1&2 and Hexen remaster. Right there with you.
Speaking of FPSs, Fallout 3 and 4 ports for Switch would be awesome and create quite the revenue for Bethesda for production of Fallout 5 and season 2 of the TV series. One can dream 😊
Yeah, I don’t know why they haven’t done it already. It’s a no-brainer.
The devs said the game was running at 60fps on Switch, it need fixes to the aiming as well. This game had a lot of potential that was held back by the rocky development, hopefully a sequel would fix the issues.
The game isn't held back by rocky development, the non port version (pc) is near perfection.
To me, this looks like a "We have Quake II at home" type of game.
Hehehe it's bang average imo
It really is in every way. Including the added modern features are half baked.
I mean a strange implementation of gyro aiming and a shoddy fps is just the last nail in the coffin
You guys have NO IDEEA how many times i refreshed youtube these past few days to see if you guys upload a review for this game :((((
The long wait finally ends!
Hehehe glad to get this out for ya. Mark
I’ll stick to the insane amount of content from the night dive quake 2 remaster. Still haven’t fully finished that extra stuff on there
Not a big boomer shooter fan since after quake arena. Just here to support the work you two do.
This port should be considered a scam, as it's not even the same game we play on PC, It starts with the engine swap from Dark Places Quake to Unity, then there is the music that doesn't play correctly, the mechanics like the Blade Dash not working as intended, the visual downgrade like no dynamic lights, no under water distortion and many other things that deviates from a true port. The fact that even Batman Arkham Knight with all its technical problems still is a true port makes things even worse for Wrath on Switch, 3D Realms should be ashamed, they not even tried.
I can’t wait to buy this game ⭐️♥️♥️♥️ thank you guys for reviews 😊
I don’t think I’m masochistic enough to give this one a try! Pretty steep price too, especially when compared to Quake 1 and 2.
I usually am but yeah this just frustrated me. Mark
Nice to see Switch still getting FPS love!
Definitely. Mark
According to Amazon there's a physical releasing may 31st for £24.99
Oooo an FPS, is it Doomed to remain unpurchased or Quaking in anticipation in my backlog. Only a SwitchUp review will decide its fate. 😅 Cheers Mark!
Hehehehe
This was such a good comment lol Switch Up should hire you.
@@adrianlumber Thank you, I'd be honoured if they did. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
It seems that the left joycon is using the roll axis for gyro which is typically used for when for when a controller upright or on a moble/handheld device because if yaw was used, you'll have to turn it like a stearing wheel. I guess they only configured it for handheld mode without consideration of the joy-cons being used separately. They could've solved this by having the option to select thw axis like Neon White or the Portal Games, have it automatically switch axis once it reaches a threshold (aka world space) like BOTw/TOTK or Splatoon 2/3, or implement the better version (player space) like the game with the best implantation on the switch, Fortnite.
In 2024 its infuriating also infuriating is many gamers just do not understand hands apart two controllers 2 hands is far superior to gyro in a single controller 2 hands wii remote chuck style with true mouse in the right hand is god tire fps
Absolutely love this game, had it on steam for years.
Waiting for the physical.
Here’s hoping this game ends up in a All Patched Up video in the future!
Dang. I’ll wait for a couple patches I guess. I still have great Switch ports of Quake and DOOM and Dusk to keep me company!
Gotta hand it to you Mark. You had me at “quake”in and “doom”ed 👏 👏 👏 well played sir, well played 😉
Haha cheers mate!
You can smash the vases to find some ammo. But ammo can still be scarce. I have this on Steam and it is much better on a keyboard and mouse. But overall, the game is a bit on the average side, at least for me.
Yep I know, it's just bang average. Mark
I grew up with doom and quake etc and these games are me all the way but ive had a few issues myself. The melee attack doesn't seem to connect with the enemy all the time when it should. Sometimes it will connect and others it doesnt. I was getting taken out by skeletons in the tutorial because attacks that should connect weren't (and its not a skill issue). You have to collect an item that allows you to save and i havent come across alot so death results in alot of backtracking and the levels are LONG. I didnt realise you could turn on infinite saves. I overlooked that. There also seems to be a slight input delay with attacks and jumping. The jump seems to occur a half second after pressing. This running in the nightdive engine would be incredible. For now, it needs work but there certainty is a good game here.
Quaking with excitement or doomed, I love it.😂 Your wit and humor is a large part of why I love this channel.
I appreciate that, cheers mate! Mark
Best….intro pun…..ever.
[obviously read in the comic book guy voice]
This is a kind of game that will always be best played on PC. I think most of the issues really stems from it not being perfectly translated to the Switch... The engine "Darkplaces" with enormous levels demand a bit more single core CPU performance than what the Switch has, that's why they have settled with 30fps. It isn't really about the Switch not being powerful enough, but rather that the engine itself is quite incompatible with the modern low powered nature of the Switch hardware. It IS a REALLY good game, but one that could be played really well on a modest laptop. :)
The devs stated awhile back they had it running at 60fps
I know these old school first person shooters are right down your alley so I was interested to see your opinion. Underwhelmed it seems, think I'll give it a swerve until a decent sale.
Been waiting to cause hell in this one. As a FPS buff from the 90's this is right up my double barrel.
Hehe I feel ya. Mark
Already added to my Steam account 'wish list'
I wish someone would make a game like this, in this sort of engine with good lighting, and make a stealth game similar to the old PC "Thief" games.
Boltgun ftw. Disonoured ftw.
@@SwitchUpYt sorry I should have specified; for the Nintendo Switch haha. Dishonored games are brilliant. On PC a game called "Gloomwood" that did a decent job. Honestly, we need Dishonored 1 at least on Switch.
But we have Quake 1 & Quake 2! As well as Prodeus.. do we need anything else?
Fighting the zombie like enemies with a melee weapon makes me want a new PS1 style Kings Field type game for some reason.
I was in theory, well into getting this game. but yeah maybe after a few patches, shame as the two quake remasters on the switch kick some serious ass, I hope they can fix the issues and make it 60fps and all that goodness, but for now it's a no buy from me, thank you for saving me some cash. Helpful in these times I’m looking for work so have to save the pennies
I'm always rather confused about how someone can take their love for old school/pixel graphics and smash it together with all of the modern perspectives and ideas for gameplay and come out with something lacking...
Like, that really should work.
Was hoping this would be a banger but looks like I’ll be waiting until it’s a savaloy
I wish there was a port of og half life/blue shit/opposing force
This is the opposite of my style of game but I can't never not support my favorite channel
Littlewood 😊
It runs in 60 fps with 4ifir firmware, justvuse fsp unlocker
Finally a review that’s spot on. The enemies are far too hit scanny waaay too fast projectile wise. I can play doom eternal on nightmare with no issue but this is just a slog to get through even on medium. The game feels super cheap. Little ammo as well in these massive maps. Needs serious recalibrating on switch.
Yeah it's very odd in terms of design
So what's the best of these modern takes on a boomer shooter on Switch? I really enjoy complex level design like in Doom 64 and where the shooting is mixed with exploring.
Dusk, absolutely. Astonishingly good game and a perfect port on Switch.
Correction: this game is $39.95 AUD not $45. I'd know because I just bought it on PS5.
Nice!
Sorry to post on this video. However, have you guys ever considered reviewing the more obscure or cultist games that come out on NSO. I say this greedly because I feel like people are dismissing iggy Wrecking balls out of hand because there mad it's not xyz game. is it a hidden masterpiece? no there's a lot of flaws. but I think it's a solid 7 of a game that has a great idea that could be itterated on. Just a thought.
I got this a couple days ago and it's unplayable. The lag on button presses is crazy! I can't aim or jump properly and the gyro controls just don't seem to work at all. I'm so pissed I wasted 20 on this, hope they patch it soon. I'm fuggin pissed about this.
Yeah it's a bit of a mess. Mark
Slipgate's other two works are Graven and the recently released Phantom Fury. Hopefully the jank on the PC versions don't make it to the Switch!
Phantom Fury will be released later this month on Switch.
We've arrived at the "did we really need this" phase of the boomer shooter resurgance. I think we are in the afterparty now.
FYI this is actually running on unity while the PC version runs on the quake engine
Ohhhhh that's....weird
@@SwitchUpYt yeah it's due to licensing issues with the modified quake engine the pc game was using meaning it can be used on the consoles
I'll stick with Quake!!
When you say arsenal I hear arsehole and that’s why I love this channel
L😅
Aww my dude.. bad gyro is such a deal breaker for me now.
"heavily modded quake engine" describes most FPS engines. Quake code is still everywhere in the industry
This one maintain the visual promixity with what we see on the First quake
@@oldiskool9328 oh, yes I agree. My point was only how the quake engine still lives and breathes through the gaming world in a way that would amaze many.
I enjoyed ion fury and its shame this one wasn’t as good . Can’t wait for all patched up episode for this one .
I'm an Old-Skool Boomer Shooter fan (generation Hex-en if you will)
So I know I'll eventually lap this up like a doity dawg... but I wont feel good about myself
Potentially brilliant, but needs a tinker!
It’s too bad…I like the look of this, but a brutal difficulty and overly large levels doesn’t sound like my cup of tea.
Ooof. Just watching the gameplay recorded is painful. I've been playing this recently on thr steam deck and its soooo much more of an enjoyable experience. Its not perfect, obviously. But at least the framerate is stable and it looks better overall on the deck.
Yeah dont buy it, i feel the same way Mark though i kind of like the feature of not being able to spam quicksave. the input lag is terrible, framerate unacceptable for this type of shooter. Never mind the enemies being simpletons or the levels being too long, the gameplay is the most important thing and its a clunker. I also share your sentiment of just using melee instead of a gun, which is a sign of a huge failure for this type of game in my opinion. I should be rocket jumping with glee but instead i am trying to shoot a weird naked zombie running around breaking pots, but my pistol is strapped to my arm which is in a full plaster cast. Maybe we can look forward to the remaster when they run it through the kex engine with 60 fps and proper gyro. Maybe we can look forward to an all patched up on it. I can respect the devs making this with the original quake engine, but its like trying to build a house nowadays with hand tools. Impressive if you can do it but there are better modern tools available that are faster and used for a reason. The product has character but is a little crooked. Dusk/quake/proteus this is not... Buy those instead for your boomer shooter needs
Absolutely agree with you mate
Hmmm this or boltgun?
💯 Boltgun
Bummer that it's performance is kind of holding it back because from a glance it looks like a really fun boomer shooter
If SwitchUp doesn't approve, neither do I.
This one is garbage on consoles compared to the pc version. The 3D Realms and Fulqrum discords are full of angry customers, including myself.
FR
That’s a bummer wth.
The issues I've brought up in the discord (for anyone interested) are:
- The blood decals are almost non-existent and disappear within seconds, unlike the pc version and also contrary to the footage shown in the console release trailer. The same goes for gibs.
- The FOV is locked way too high and there is no option to adjust it (Also contrary to console release trailer footage that seems to show a more reduced FOV). Further to that, the visual options are pretty well non-existent with the exception of HUD options and Gamma/Brightness.
- The bright red screen flashes when damage is taken actually caused me to have a migraine and made the game unplayable for me (I'm not one sensitive to flashing lights or migraines). This flashing is also not present on PC (or is present to a MUCH lesser degree)
- Controller optimization seems off, almost like there's a bit of an input delay, making platforming (or long jumping) feel horrible.
- Textures/lighting appears to flicker in the vicinity of shrines, noticeable in the tutorial stage.
I've also read that people are getting killed through walls by glitching monsters and are unable to progress levels due to keys missing or level triggers bugging out (Probably due to the switch from Quake engine on PC to Unity on consoles)
I know some of this was echoed in the video, but 3D Realms and Fulqrum really don't seem to care, and I legitimately feel burned by this one. I've never had an issue with the PC version and actually quite liked it. Overall just really disappointing.
@@SwitchUpYtAlso, just a small correction to your review, this one started out using the Quake engine on PC, but the dev who did the console port switched it to the Unity engine, which probably explains a lot of the issues. The engine change information is from the 3DR discord.
Sucks console players got shafted. I played the PC version right after the 1.0 launch and had a great time. Hopefully the issues get fixed, but it sucks 3D Realms basically rushed the port.
What a shame. At a glance this looks right up my alley but looks pretty rough, even for my low standards.
Mmm... not for me this one. I'll just keep playing Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal instead. 😋
Good choice IMO. Mark
Another 4 letter, Doom style boomer shooter
*grabs credit card*
LET'S DO IT!!!!
“Gamplay”, lol.
North American Physical plzzzzz
Hate the hell out of first person shooters. No first person game is worth a damn
lol that'll tell 'em!
Poor game, easy skip. I wish Unreal Tournament was released on Switch
Unreal Tournament 2004 with full online support and gyro support please!!
This game is borderline unplayable because of the aiming controls. I got this for ny steam deck when it came out and I thought it couldn't be any worse with a gamepad then using the deck. Nah this is terrible even with aim assist on. What it wrong with these 3d realms releases with aiming being a chore with a gamepad? Phantom fury is the same. Just terrible to try and shoot stuff in a game where all you do is shoot stuff.
Agree, I hope they sort it out. Mark
This game is total jank on the switch. And it is sad seeing ass both quakes were ported perfectly. As with dusk. I don't know what theses guy were doing with the optimization with this. But it is so jank.....
30 fps, with drops... Thanks for the review i will skip this game
so you like hard games but you also play in easy with infinite lives? xD
In this one because the aiming and FPS make anything else pointless. On PC it's cake on hard mode. Mark
@@SwitchUpYt all this fps like quake were always too fast 4 me 😳
Sounds like a skip for me
Honestly don’t see the point of reproducing old style games ..... (& doing it badly)
There's a niche in the market for older FPS styles that's being catered to ...... (& it's doing well)
Broken mess controls wring gyro activated in 2024 what a mess.....I add switch 2 needs to get back to wiiremote and chuck true mouse fps controls with joycon 2 one stick one mouse two hands PROPER CONTROLS
