deriter64 “How about New York?” “Well, there are certain sections of New York, Major, that I wouldn’t advise you to invade...like SoHo, that place is dead. Your best bet is to go for Greenwich Village and hope the rents haven’t gone up.” 😜
Another absolutely GENIUS line from the script (not shown in this video clip): Rick studying a chessboard, with Mr. Ugarte asking him: “You despise me, don’t you?” And Rick, not even looking up from the chessboard, blandly answers him back: “Well, if I gave you any thought, I probably would.” OH MAN! That is an AWESOME script if ever there was one!
Not Rick’s line but just before that line is, “I like to think that you murdered someone, it’s the romantic in me.” And then right after that, “it’s actually all three…” The writing is phenomenal in this movie.
He starred in the first movie to show gay men in a positive way in Different From the Others in 1919. Of course, it was banned by stupid people and then later the Nazis (who were also stupid).
Mine is When H.B. Told His Girl She Got to Get on the Plane or They Go to a Nazi Death Camp, Ain't Right Louie and Louie Says "I'm Afraid the Nazi Will Insist." LOL. (smile)
@@sampuatisamuel9785 Correct and being only 5 years older at 42 was hardly a stretch. He was 54 in The Caine Mutiny, so that was a stretch. Still, as in this movie, I cannot imagine any other actor playing Queeg in that movie. Word was the studio preferred Richard Widmark. A great actor but I don't think Widmark could have pulled it off.
Egads, the Nazis wouldn't have stood a chance in Hell's Kitchen or the Bronx then. They'd have the Italian AND Jewish mob to deal with for openers -- Meyer Lansky, Bugs Siegel and Charlie Luciano in particular!
If you mean by his line "are my eyes really brown" he is showing how apathetic he is to their not so subtle intimidations (i.e. we know stuff about you) by brushing off what the other guy had brought up and reading the physical description of himself in the book
One of the great lines in in movies of that era: "Can you imagine us in London?" Then, so terrific: "When you get there, ask me."

@@crazyman8472 The funny part is "are my eyes really brown?"
Great script by the Epstein brothers.
an excellent reponse to these arrogant germans!!!!!
I thought "Are my eyes really brown?" was a great line too. Imagine smarting off like that to a Nazi!
" there are parts of New York I would suggest you not invade ". Classic.
The script writer was obviously very familiar with New York City.
Haha! Yeah, that's one of my favorite lines! Having snooped around all over NYC for years myself, boy he hit that one on the nail!
@@Anvanho Having grown up in New York, as Bogie did, I can certify that this statement still holds true today.
But what are those parts exactly?
@@MimonJesus67 in old NYC Hells kitchen and surrounding areas were famous for violence .... Watch the movie Lost Battalion gives an idea .
"The reason is a little vague"
That doesn't sound like a very complete dossier, then...
Given the film’s context, having Rick ask “Are my eyes really brown?” is positive proof of a BRILLIANT script! 😀
I like "I'm a drunkard." I use it every chance I get.
Yeah, that's one of my favorite lines as well. But I have blue eyes.
Well there are certain sections of New York , Major, that I would advise you not to try to invade.
Lol and it still holds true today lol

The movie is full of good banter. Especially the zingers Bogart gives throughout
Dialogue in film used to be so artful
People were a lot more well-spoken before the 1980's
You mean intelligent.
This was the scene that secured Casablanca as my all-time favourite film.
Bogey, always a smart ass. Love it
"Not particularly my beloved Paris" with a thoughtful, downcast look. Great acting and great foreshadowing of the plot.
We'll always have Paris my friend
The sarcasm is perfecto !
"There are certain areas of New York that I would advise you not to invade"
WHERE BROOKLYN AT
WHERE BROOKLYN AT
Zu Casablanca muss man nicht viel sagen einfach ein Meisterwerk.. 👍👍❤
“I was misinformed” is my favorite Rick line

"Drunkard" has been my nationality on every form since first seeing this movie.
BROTHER !
Remembering a time when there was something worth fighting for.
exactly I agree with you
That time is now.. forces of evil attacked our nations Capitol on Jan 6
And people who would fight!
Speak for yourself my dearest. We've been fighting the Ukrainian Nazis since 2014.
Yeah , that died a long time ago
Are my eyes really brown
Conrad Veidt and Margaret Hamilton greatest screen villains of all time !
If The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was made in the 1940s, Bogart and Veidt would’ve been perfect for Blondie and Angel Eyes.
Love it
and Peter Lorre as Eli Wallach
"I'm a drunkard". Followed by the gentle laughter. That's great ensemble acting.
Conrad Veidt - greatest ever.
If you like The Cebinet of Dr. Callagari.

Aw, Cesare and Gwynplaine aged so well.
I Love When the Good Guy is a Wise Guy. LOL. (smile) Great Movie.
The man who laughs!
I decided Rick was the coolest guy on earth when he showed this Nazi Major he could make him look like a fool. And he did an amazing job of it.
Weltklasse. ❤❤❤❤
Супер спасибо большое отдыхаешь душой
"Are my eyes really brown?" Yup indeedy! Plus, you drink and smoke too much Rick, but nobody's perfect!
Chispeante ironía. Great. 😊👌🌹🍃🌹🍃🌹🍃🌹🍃🌹
fyi...places to avoid in New York City; Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn
Especially South Ozone Park. 😀
So fucking smart.
He did get into Yale.
"There are sections of New York I'd advise you strongly to not invade."
a minute and a half...
that much in a minute and a half...
If you're from New York you got to love Rick's comment.

Age 37!?!? Bogart looks much older than that!
At the time he was 42. He lived only until 1957, died of cancer at age 57. A legend.
It's a movie and he is acting his part, superbly and so convincingly that we think it's real

@@michaelsimpson6970 No, he was 42. Born on Christmas Day 1899. If it had been 1900 he would have still been 41.
"Are my eyes really brown?"
Groucho Marx could have delivered this line; Bill Murray could have delivered this line.
Fuck off for comparing Bogart to Bill Murray. Bill Murray is brilliant but he isn't remotely Humphrey Bogart!!! Bogart was once in a 1000 years.

Well written script. Those great writers from the past have been boycotted by commi Hollywood
Those great writers were blacklisted and called communists by people on the extreme right.
Spoken like someone who has never heard of HUAC.
Why don't make it in colour so we can find out.
