    STORYLINE
Ian Smith, the last prime minister of white-ruled Rhodesia, whose attempts to resist black rule dragged the country now known as Zimbabwe into isolation and civil war, has died, a family friend said on Tuesday.
    He was 88.
Smith died at a clinic near Cape Town, South Africa, where he spent his final years. He had been ill for some time and recently suffered a stroke.
To many white Rhodesians, he was a kind of idol - "good old Smithy."
To most blacks, his rule symbolised the worst of racial oppression.
He fought for Britain as a Royal Air Force pilot during World War II, then rebelled against it 20 years later.
Smith imprisoned current President Robert Mugabe in 1964 for 10 years, calling him a "terrorist" intent on turning the country into a one-party dictatorship and famously declared : "I don't believe in black majority rule, ever, in Rhodesia, not in a thousand years."
Despite their bitter differences, Smith and Mugabe shared one common bond, their deep dislike of Britain, which they both saw as a meddling colonial power.
Just as Mugabe accused former British Prime Minister Tony Blair of interfering in Zimbabwe to protect the interests of whites, Smith poured vitriol on the British government for pressing him to hand political power to the black majority.
Smith was born to Scottish immigrants in western Zimbabwe on April 8, 1919, but renounced his claims to British citizenship in 1984.
Two years after the outbreak of World War II, he joined the RAF as a fighter pilot, and was shot down twice in combat. Plastic surgery to fix hideous scars from the first crash paralysed the right side of
his face, giving him a sinister, expressionless appearance.
Smith was demobilised in 1946 and returned to Rhodesia to raise cattle and grow corn but entered politics in 1953 as a member of the ruling United Federal Party and rose through party ranks as an

@Azay Deelay birthed out of a rhodesian corps to starve its people and discriminate against the race of another. You'd think if you were oppressed by a people then freed you would try to be better then them but zimbabwe has shown us otherwise. It would seem do to this spite and hate against whites that mugabe decided to deport them all which is what led to a lack of skilled workers and caused the starvation and poverty in the first place. This in turn begs the question if mugabe really was morally superior to his white counterpart? If not then which would you rather have? A competent leader who may have deposed a majority rule to avoid a Racist dictator from taking control and ruining Rhodesia but still respected all peoples in his country, or an incompetent racist Dictator who funded the killings and forced deportation of whites and thought it would be a good idea to hyper inflate the countries currency by printing more money? I'll let you decide.

Of you miss Rhodesia but the problem is you white Rhodesians where very blind to the plight of the black majority. U can't kick out people of their lands and make it for your taking. Let's say non Europeans come to A European country like Switzerland and make the alps for their taking. On top of that, they kick out the Swiss natives off those alps and make sure the only time a Swiss gets to access the alps is when the Swiss are laborers, not residents. Also restrictions were put against black majority. They were not allowed to grow crops like coffee as it would have brought competition to the white farmers. You can't treat people unfairly and expect them to be friendly or servant like.

I do not agree with many of their policies such as the Land Tenure Act, and the very small black electorate in Rhodesia, but Rhodesia was materially and objectively a much better country than Zimbabwe is today, as even blacks in Rhodesia were better off than nearly everywhere else in Africa.

Speaking as a white Zimbabwean of British stock. Rhodesia was great. Perhaps the best run nation on Earth. However, it is in the past. We now look to the future. Zimbabwe will rise again to her former glory. We will throw off the chains of the tyrannical Zanu-PF and take our country back. A land of Loving-Kindness, Compassion and Unity for all. Our wildlife and national parks continue to thrive and flourish. Our country restored to the breadbasket and Jewel of Africa once again. Our economy the richest in Africa. Our people joyful, prosperous and content. A new generation of young Zimbabweans of Higher Christ Consciousness will take over and lead our country to a glorious future. We are a nation of lions, a people of golden hearts and the country of the King. Proud to be born here. Proud to be a Zimbabwean. Proud to help the animals and wildlife of my treasured country.

Mugabe, the marxist, ruined both Rhodesia and Zimbabwe while Ian ruined neither. The international community isolated Rhodesia, leaving them helpless against "guerrilla fighters"/terrorists, which proved deadly for all groups. At least Rhodesia had tribal reservations and tribal land purchases, which is far less horrible than the situations Mugabe put both blacks and whites through... Even in Canada there's demographic rules for Quebecois which are there to maintain the Quebecois population percentage, Mugabe didn't do that with white Rhodesians who were born there, he took everything from them and essentially forced them to leave and wonder the world pretending to be south africans. It's kind of just a fact life would be better if Rhodesia still existed
