    I kept my Whale fins in an open area in my rooftop. It has adopted with the hot sun, rain and mild winter weather. As I live in the Southeast Asia, we don't experience extreme cold weather here. Despite of being in the open area, all my Sansevieria plants are growing nicely and they are healthy too. I watch your videos. Thank you for all the important details. Take care!

    I believe yours may be an aubrytiana, which is sometimes nicknamed jaboa. I spotted it right away in the thumbnail. Mine is my favorite sansevieria! Yours is looking so beautiful.

      By the way-mine has done very well being propagated with the method of cutting a leaf into multiple smaller lengths and rooting in water. I have multiple babies coming up in just a few months! So I’m planning to remove my leaves that got sunburned this summer (they look exactly like yours) and use them for propagations. In no time at all, the plant will be huge. I can’t wait.

    My daughter bought me a one leaf specimen for Christmas last year, and it grew one leaf this year. It is a short outer variegated variety. I have it in a mixed pot with other sansevieria for now, until it gets bigger

      Nice!!! The variegated ones are stunning... was your new leaf bigger than the first leaf?

    my favourite is the sansevieria zeylanica. when i started at university i got a one leaf plant from my mom, it didn’t grow for a long time. one hot summer day it got sun burn and only the lower half of the leaf was left. i started to care more and more and now, 7 years later, it is a full pot with large and tall leaves. new leaves have cool patterns as well

      Zeylanica is a Pretty one for sure. i seem to always stop and admire some of the patterns on them.

    Hello Bill, I've been wishing for a whale fin!🙂 The spring stock I found at our local nursery were quite a disappointment! i visited them frequently, but they were very beat up and the price was simply out of my range. Plus, they were in HUGE 3 gallon pots, which I couldn't manage to lift or move..🤔. I mentioned my wish to a lady in my local plant swap and she was happy to gift me a whale fin that she had dug up in Florida this summer! I repotted it in good cactus mix and she sits on an East facing window for about 6 hours of morning light. She's a very pretty fin!😌 As luck would have it, I was gifted another fin from another lady in the same group, but it's in poor condition. Same cactus mix and window, so I am hopeful she will at least shoot a baby.... I concur with more light for snake plants, it really boosts their growth. Mine love being outside in the spring/summer (zone 6 a/b)

      The costs of these have been so high but finally starting to drop. It's wonderful that you were able to get some from a swap! i wish you some speedy growth on your babies :)

    About four or five years ago I bought a pot of S. cylindrica at Walmart. When I got it home I found out that the grower had rooted about ten leaves and jammed them altogether in one pot. I separated them out and gave most of them away. It took the ones I kept about three years before they sent up any growth. They are nice plants and I'm glad I took the time and trouble, but they are not fast growing plants.

      @@PlantzNThings I kept two. Aside from the original leaf cuttings, one has a single crown with three leaves. The longest leaf is 52 centimeters long. The second plant has two crowns The first crown has two crowns. The first crown has three leaves with the longest leaf being 35 centimeters. the second crown is a sprout with one leaf about 17 centimeters long and a new leaf only about three centimeters. The original cuttings were tip cuttings, about 20 centimeters long. these are still intact, alive, and healthy.

    I'd LOVE to have a giant one like this. I bought one of the smaller ones in hopes that maybe it will eventually bulk-up in size. So far it has grown only two leaves, but they do seem to be getting larger, but both the new ones are skinnier than the original leaf. It's near a very bright south facing window so it's getting pretty ideal light conditions. I've had it since summer 2019, so about 1 leaf per year is accurate.

    My faves are masoniana and sayuri! I'm envious of how all your masoniana leaves (stalks?) go straight up. Mine splay out in all directions, giving it a huge footprint.

    Been wanting one ever since I found out about them! Finally a starting is arriving in the next day or two. Looking at all the comments and some other videos I think I'll start a journal on my newer plants. When I got them, their size, soil type, sun exposure, care, etc.. Heck, might even include sketches of them too! Regardless, the info will be there when I need it. The human memory does strange things as we get older! LOL.

    Hey, I kinda think your whale Fin is a Joboa. I have one an it’s 47in. The leaves look very similar accept the Joboa gets taller.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  Před 2 lety

      It's possible.. there are some similarities between the 2. when i search images i feel that it lends itself more to the masoniana. but i could be wrong... when i bought it, it didn't have an ID.

    You get can miniature leaves (2 inches max height) if you torture the rooted cuttings. My leaves are in low light and the whale fins doesn't get above 2-inches tall.

    Loved the update, they look great! I always enjoy your videos! I purchased a variegated whale fin at Vermeer's in Welland, it came planted in coco coir, I am thinking of taking it out and giving it some more appropriate soil. Do you think I can do it now or should I wait till spring? Also, I agree with you, the S. Kirkii is fantastic!

      @PlantzNThings  Před 2 lety

      Thank you :) I Love Vermeer's, always a nice selection of plants :) If you can wait until spring i would... but if you feel you'll rot it if you don't change it i'm sure it won't skip a beat if you repot it now. Are you growing any of the Kirkii varieties?
