Why did The K Foundation burn a million quid? (part 3 of 4)

  • On 23rd August 1994, Bill Drummond & Jimmy Cauty (a.k.a. The K Foundation, The KLF, The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, The JAMS etc) travelled to the Scottish island of Jura with 1 million pounds of their own money.
In a small, deserted boathouse on Jura they burned the lot.
All that they asked was that you know about it.
This documentary was spliced together by YFY on Xmas Day 2012 as a gift to friends.
Hopefully it helps paint the bigger picture surrounding the duo. It is by no means the complete story, but should provoke interest to learn more.
The Manual, Chill Out, Kylie Said Trance, It's Grim Up North club mix, The Magnificent, K Cera Cera, CNPD, Pete Doherty, The 17, No Music Day and more will be discussed at a later stage.
Thanks always to Bill and Jimmy for making the world a more interesting place.
    Justified!

80 per cent of audience and perhaps the general population just cannot get past the spell that “filthy lucre” has over them. This was a brilliant stunt or whatever- these thick cunts should go stand outside Suthebys or Manchester City/ United or Maserati Dealerships and judge the Dealers throwing million after million at small items or penis extensions or young guys with no particular skills other than with a soccer ball. How much “ good work “ could all these mega wealthy companies do with teeny proportions of their billions- but shame on the musical men for having money to burn. Just once. I’m no fresh faced idealist but God fucking Knows , this society Does need some sort of Re- Set of its Worship and Total faith in pounds shillings and pence. Apologies for ranting on yours but it’s summit to read on the big 😀

Burning a Million quid actually threw up more questions than answers. Ironically the burning of this amount of money was worth the spend as it were - what actually is money? & these guys weren't depriving anyone of the money as it was theirs - what they did was open - ended. What is evident is the reaction it caused: they burnt what was many people's dreams in their head. A great gesture which will forever be discussed.

Def Leppard have the balls to sit there and comment on them burning the money when they had to pay out millions to get out of Jim Steinman producing Hysteria. They had to sell four millions albums just to break even, and they are shaking their heads off the million pounds being set on fire.

This act and film has such a massive emotional impact because it's like an evaluator of ones feelings toward money. You cannot ignore it, it pulls up deep feelings, gives estimation what do you praise: if it's money you'll be extremely angry because you have strong emotions with money. Those people in the studio couldn't wrap their heads about that idea and how much good was and will be done because of it. How many people could realise what they're following and praying to is just an ash and change their lives, even in a small scope. That cannot be evaluated and it's way more worth then that 1 million pounds.

They could have spent it on prostitutes, cocaine, cars or even just gambled it all away. In each case nobody good would have ended up with the money. In fact less people were hurt this way. It does display the uncharitable mind of much of our generation. Awesome story! A waste of...money, but good art.

It's their money that they've earned and it's theirs to do with as they want.
People make millions and "burn" their money in their own selfish way.
I work hard and "burn" about £50 a week on alcohol.I don't need it to live and that money could be spent to save lives but i spend it for my own selfish wants.
This does trouble me,but as Bill says-There will still be the same amount of loaves and apples.
People marvel at fucking yachts that Russian Oligarchs have bought with money made from natural resources to which they have no legitimate claim whatsoever, but these two lads make the best acid track ever, make the biggest contribution to pop art since Andy Warhol, and generally fuck shit up,then you get Joe Elliot acting like disgusted from Sheffield-Sit down you big tart,
Until aliens land, take control and distribute resources evenly, nothing will be fair or just,so just embrace Bill and Jimmy for what they are,cos i can't see anyone else like them infiltrating the charts ever again.

The apples and bread people could give to the hungry and share with the unfortunate, would still be there with or without that money. Its human choice not to help those without the paper to trade. The paper is meaningless, traded for your life, your time, a pittance for a bargain.
