Honestly, the best response for "The 1% should not be taxed because they built this country" when you are talking to working people tends to be: no, you did. And hundreds of thousands of hard workers like you.
Exactly. It always annoys me when people say '[rich famous person] built [thing]' when they _never_ did.
Rockefeller didn't build Rockefeller Plaza, hundreds of working class people did. Bill Gates didn't build Microsoft, thousands of programmers did. Jeff Bezos didn't build Amazon, thousands of warehouse workers did. Elongated Muskrat isn't building electric cars and rocket ships, hundreds of engineers and mechanics are.
It's particularly galling when they idolise someone like Trump**, who has never done a hard day's work in his life.

A large portion of my family won't interact with those of us they consider Socialists.
I am angry with Fox News, which has been, to use Right Wing language, grooming it's viewers to be angry and fearful for decades.
I am angry with the Democratic Party for trying to appease the Right instead of fighting for progressive ideals.
I am angry with Trump for being the sick, easily manipulated, racist, sexist, greedy, Narcissist he is and for spreading his filth throughout society, allowing all of this to be normalized.
But, I am more sad than angry because, while we focus endlessly on the monster created by enemies of the American People, who is a very real threat, we are not paying attention to the existential threats of Climate Change, proliferation of AI, and the next pandemic.
We have the ability to meet all of those challenges. The question that concerns me is, are we still capable of making the required, collective, commitment?

Family are those who treat you like family - with love, understanding, forgiveness, tolerance and unconditional acceptance. Oftentimes a person can be both a relative and family to you, but sometimes they are two different people. I cut ties with my super-successful son - my only child - six years ago, but I have a spritual daughter with whom a share a purely spiritual, emotional connection. that is manifested on a daily basis for over 16 years. And I can truthfully state that, to me, my daughter is more my daughter than my son is my son. If this intellectual distinction is helpful in giving people in pain who have been ostracized and victimized by their relatives, please know that it worked for me.

I try to do that each time I vote. I am so appalled at how people will vote only for their own interests. We either work together to makes things better or we eventually fall.
That is the problem-you cannot please everyone. Also, voting is a crapshoot. A lot of supposed "reformers" fail to keep their promises, or make things worse.

The reason they have no food is because the Federal Reserve is in control of Congress, and both left and right agree to borrow money from the Fed. at interest, therefore we and future generations of workers are the collateral on the national debt. What do you think the Birth Certificate is all about? Once born and certified a child becomes collateral on that national debt. So you see it's not a left vs right issue - it's both sides being owned and controlled by the Federal Reserve. It's a game. They finger point to give the illusion it's the "other sides fault."

I feel grateful for my mom, she does what is expected of a Christian. And she's not a Trump fan, nor hates on others. She grows veggies and takes some to homeless shelter in her area. Republican her entire life, until Trump came along. Now she is paying more attention to everything. And is bit upset by the party that is spreading hate & violence- just to win.

I can't tell if it's because they see the rich guy/ corporation as similar to them (as a provider), or if they're deferential to the rich guy as some sort of guru. Either way seems so out of step with reality it borders on delusion.
@@hks2377 When the Constitutional Convention was going on in Philadelphia, there were workers protesting in the streets for truly universal sufferage and a lot of ideas which are still considered pretty far "left" today. Those wealthy landowners who actually wrote the Constitution didn't do what those crowds wanted, but they did hear them.
Going to church makes one a good person in the same way standing in a parking space makes one a car. Voting for Trump while preaching the word of Jesus makes one a hypocrite, pure and simple. Even as an atheist I know that.

Vs biden who has one accuser and has issued an apology for his touchy/feely way of interacting with women. Not at all the same thing. One has proven rapes and molestations, one does not. Is it possible that tara reed is telling the truth yes and i don't like victim blaming, but her story has not been consistent and there is no wake of allegations by other women like with trump and other powerful men who do this.

This is legitimately mind blowing. I'm sitting here listening to my own story read back to me but I didn't write it... Seriously, there is nothing in the letter being read that doesn't describe my situation save for the fact that I feel deep down like my dad knows he's wrong. I'd wager that the story is actually a lot more common than I thought. But that doesn't make it any easier for those of us who are dealing with brainwashed parents. My own mother told me that my vote didn't count. Me, her eldest son. A veteran of the war in Afghanistan of whom she claims to be so proud. I asked her why my vote didn't count. I asked her to convince me. I didn't get upset. I didn't yell at her. I didn't make fun of her. I just wanted her to attempt to convince me. She spouted some broken faux "news" talking points and then suddenly she didn't want to talk about it anymore.
That was a brilliant letter. I'm 68 now and unlike this viewers past history with his/her parents, my parents were liberals and we had the same views on most things political or religious. Somehow since Trump came in the scene, my sister became a member of his cult. She insisted on sharing on a daily basis that Trump was sent by God. I asked her several times to stop sending me his propaganda but she didnt listen. Today we are estranged. She just doesn't get it no matter what I say. Now, when she sends me messages or articles she thinks mean something and important, I simply delete without even reading. It's sad how the MAGA has split families like they have.

To the op I get it I live in deep red indiana and it's been like invasion of the body snatchers watching people I loved and knew for a fact were good people fall down the trump rabbit hole. My dad joined the John Birch Society when I was a kid in the 1980s. He eventually became a top leader and worked for them, full time. I watch him and his organization prepare conservatives for such things as Trump and Q. Here I am in my 40s and my father's dangerous politics still haunt me and keep me up at night. He's a lost cause.

Just know that he is not you and do better. Those of us of an age are dying out, so be the better replacement you are meant to be. Vow to break the chain and keep your wits about you to not fall into the same traps of fear. My father was mafia adjacent and a criminal who died with great fear of the next world. I am not perfect but I sleep with a clear conscience. My children know nothing of the world I had as a child and never will be that way. I am better and they are better than me. Slowly we make progress and know that if we stand firm the arc of history bends toward justice. Just feels like a major setback but only if we let it. Look at the history of Aristocracy and Nobility and realize what we have broken in the long term. Yes, the current moment is a setback and they are trying to break America to return to wage slaves and such but with strength and fortitude we can reject that and move forward. Nothing worth doing is easy.
…but you are not. Keep up your idealism as the fuel for the change you see needs your presence in the moment. At 73 I see many small ways I can make a change in my small corner of the world. If we all just changed our little sphere of influence, we can change the world.

Comparing a regime that has committed thousands of atrocities against it's own people, where there is no representation of the people in government is a far cry from Republicans in Texas. If you're talking about in Texas specifically, the people there have voted in republicans and a very obvious point in the majority of republican canadicies and campaigns has been pro-life. Ironically thousands of conservative women voted to take their own human rights to abortion away, the republican party preaches a message of not having big government, anti-mask mandates, vaccine mandates, etc, whilst directly implementing policies like the heartbeat laws that are a tyrannical intrusion into people's own health decisions. The republicans and democrats both are the same authoritarian parties, they just don't admit it. I think it's a rather far stretch to say that restricting the right to abortion is comparable to women in afghanistan who can't even drive a car on the street.
While Texas restricts voting, gerrymanders, restricts women's rights, bans books, ignores public safety, I still see some differences between the state and the Taliban.

I work for a small company, and our owner got pretty vocal about being pissed that he has to pay taxes when the whole 'Former President only paid $400 in taxes' story broke. A guy born on second base, who thinks he's a self-made man because he spent his life surrounded by people born on third base, I've heard the "How am I supposed to feed my family?" bit. Like, uh, you own -six- seven houses; _do_ you have a problem feeding your family? He takes four weeks off a year for vacation trips regardless of how the company's doing. He fucking took an out-of-state trip for effing _Father's Day._ I'm grateful to have a job that pays more than the minimum wage, but the guy absolutely fucking _worships_ money, and has flat-out said he wants more so he doesn't have to follow all the laws the rest of us have to follow. Imagine getting a low-level, local, political position of public trust, and *immediately* using it to give your private company awards in the name of the City.

I see the same shift to the right in my siblings and many friends. We are all in our 60s and 70s. It is less heartbreaking than it would be in a parent, but it still smacks me upside the head when I realize that I have no idea who these people are now. Some of them used to espouse the Christian ideals of generosity, charity, kindness and now it is all me, me, me. I try telling myself they are afraid, but I can’t understand why. And if I am honest I don’t want to understand. Some of my oldest relationships with people who share my history are ghosts of what they were. People who spent their working lives in health care are antivaxxers and anti maskers. People who I stood beside in environmental protests 50 years ago, are denying or minimalizing climate change. There are days I feel like I am in an episode of the Twilight Zone. It makes me incredibly sad.

My father, a progressive before we had “progressives,” is the person I aspire to be. Caring and civic minded, he gives back; always has. An 81 year old farmer, he cares for the environment. I am lucky to have such an influence in my life. I am very proud of my dad.

My dad is the same and I am so thankful I am not going through what this guy is going through.
My dad passed away 10 years ago, I saw the anger and the pain he felt at the world. He ended up deep into infowars and all that. What I saw on January 6th reminded me so strongly of my dad... He was otherwise a good guy, but painfully jaded by the systems that failed him time and time again, that he became what he despised when I was growing up. I so often wonder what he would think of me now.

It is not a one size fit all thing at all. I have 60 and 70 year old friends, that got disowned just like I did. I still have not gotten over some things my family have said and done.

As a young Catholic priest who sees the hypocrisy all around in the Church, I’m grateful for this message. I think Pope Francis would agree. He’s trying to shake the Church out of this hypocrisy.
My cousin was a Jesuit priest who just recently quit because he no longer believes the Catholic Church practices what they preach.
And too many Catholics, ingrained in the right wing view of Christianity, would vote out this pope if they could, not seeing that he is talking and living what Christ said to do.
As a young Catholic priest, there's still time for you to do something better with your life than promote lies.

I can relate to the concerns expressed in that person's letter. I can't even talk about politics with my mom anymore, due to her steady diet of FOX garbage. It's just so, so sad.
I know what that's like. At least half of my family is on a steady diet of Faux News and I can't talk about anything with them anymore without it turning into a shout fest.

Exact same scenario as me dude. My mom is a FOX loyalist. Words out of Hannity or Tucker's mouth hold more value then any opinion or value I have about these topics. Ive tried everything. Even trying to get her to understand why I think the way I do about these topics is impossible. I get the typical fall back buzz words and phrases, " Venezuela" , "That's SOCIALISM!", "Well if you dont like corporations get rid of your phone", "Trump was the best president we could have", Trump saved out economy and now Biden is ruining it". etc etc.

Yes! Millennials & Gen Z have a reputation for being “entitled”. Some of that is typical of every group of younger people. Sometimes they were genuinely spoiled. Sometimes they were sheltered from reality, which is just as common among kids of conservatives as kids of liberals. In many cases though, “entitled” is a mischaracterization. They were raised in a more progressive time & so are less willing to accept things like sexual harassment, homophobia, racial discrimination, etc. They’re objecting to things most of us always knew were wrong. The difference is they weren’t socialized to accept those harmful behaviors as inevitable parts of life. They were taught to stand up to bullies, not just ignore them & they’re applying that lesson, beyond the playground. That’s what many of their parents didn’t anticipate.

@wolfman02 Yet, the definition of good and bad are not black and white. You can't proclaim that there are 30 genders, but good and bad is binary. As a German green party voter i'm so left, it's of the charts by US standards, but to me, both extremes left and right look pretty much the same. Yes, the left motive is to improve other peoples live (although some just want to take away from others), while the right is motivated by fear that somebody takes something away from them, but at the end, the result is the same. If you are intolerant against 90% of people, even the ones who are on your side, you either force them to agree in a fascist way or you will slow down your progress because you alienate people. Beau recently had a video about the metaphorical spear and the spear head. I would even argue that some kind of conservatism is necessary for balance.

@@Isador911 Thing is, even if someone had those biases, they were usually ones they struggled internally with and that's why they hid them or downplayed their support, because they knew they clashed with their other principles. They may not have been able to banish them but they could control them, now the current republican party and trumpism is being that 'friend' that's a really bad influence.

I feel like every generation gets beaten into submission, and in the end we just shrug and server out the remaining years of our sentence. When you said "because that's what you taught them", I just shouted "exactly!". My dad taught me a lot of things about how to be a good person, the importance of doing things for others and not just for you, etc. So now that he's voting for the people who do the exact opposite, who foster that division rather than a future that's better for everyone, it's hard to reconcile that. We've had multiple fights about this kind of thing, and it's so hard to see someone you used to respect so much and who taught you what has become your core beliefs devolve into someone who seems like a shell of their former self. It really put it into perspective for me when you said that they've just given up and accepted the status quo... Thanks for this video, hopefully one day I can show it to my dad and we can understand each other better.

"The brainwashing of my Dad" is a 2015 documentary that tells the story of one man who once held leftist ideals, who supported union workers on strike, but who gradually, through listening to conservative talk radio and watching Fox, became an angry Trumpite with all that this implies. His daughter (who he lived with) took control of all the TV remotes and through controlling what he was exposed to, gradually brought out the man who he'd once been again. He has now recanted his hard right beliefs and now wonders how he could have ever been fooled into becoming what he once despised. - It's a great film and I wonder if it might be of some help to the sons and daughters who are contacting Beau in desperation.
If I could lock people out of the "Fox" bubble, it would go a long way in deprogramming them.
The problem with the above scenario is that the daughter is just as brainwashed as her father. For her to think that she is somehow less brainwashed is comical. Both the right and left are two sides of the same coin, and are controlled by the large corporations and the Federal Reserve.

I lost my Dad suddenly a year ago to a massive stroke.
Our last interaction was over politics and conspiracy theories and everything mentioned in this video.
He threw his hands up and asked the heavens where he went wrong to raise such an idiot child (and meant it).
I answered, sincerely, that it was his example of fearlessly giving of himself to strangers, neighbors, and his family that taught me to not be afraid to give of myself.
I can't say my father's change was immediate, but was most noticeable when Obama was elected. About a year into his first term, my mother made us promise to not discuss politics, public policy, social issues, etc in her presence as it upset her to see us so angry over ideas and so we kept our peace while she was alive.
That lasted until he remarried a super conservative charismatic christian he had gone to school with and almost immediately he began proselytizing, but not about spiritual matters! He would hammer on me about all of the ideals *he* instilled in me about feminism, egalitarianism, etc until we reached a point where he wouldn't even communicate directly with me, even though I would do my very best to avoid any discussions deeper than a mud puddle.
I miss my Dad, but his absence isn't felt any more acutely than it was before he died.

At least once a year we sit down as a family and spread out all the mail from charities we receive. We ask our children to study them, and they get to choose what they would have us (parents) contribute to and how much to send. We all feel good while discussing this. We hope that when they take over what we leave to them that they will remember how this felt and will continue this practice with their children. My parents led a life of service to others....nurse, funeral director, and ambulance service. Carved on their tombstone is a quote, "Let me live by the side of the road and be a friend to man(kind)." I am so grateful to them for their example! Blessings to all!!

Yep, everything I grew up believing and now the level of vitriol I get from all my family is so against everything I watched and was told as a child by them when I grew up. I have lost them all, it breaks my heart every time I have a few minutes to think about it. My parents are in their mid 80s and very liberal. They lament the fact that their generation took so much and left so little, well, a lot of messes for younger generations to clean up if they can.
That's really awesome! My mother is 87 and became a liberal in the last few years. Mostly a fiscal liberal but still saw the light. We were raised hyper evangelical.

I knew Gramps was pro social policy and watched with pure joy when my cousin heard him trash Trump to his kids and support Bernie at our last family gathering. My dad is in his mid 80's and is also VERY Liberal. Of the six of us that he and my late mother raised we are split down the middle 3 to 3, liberals versus the Trumpies (wish I could call them conservatives, but they are not). Can only carry non political conversations with the Trumpies.
I can binge watch this channel all day... You can't help but learn about yourself and others. It shows me that despite our differences we are really good inside... Most of us. The writer sounds like a cool, sweet, loving, warm, and sensible person.

A beautiful piece this morning, Beau. At 58, I have been an environmentalist for 50 years. I have lost hope. AND I realize that the awareness of young people begins from a different baseline than my own and that this allows them to still be hopeful and to have something to work for. Losing hope is one thing; failing to support their hope is another.
I am the same age, 1963 baby born at the end of the baby boom. I grew up in a neighborhood populated by people who came home from WWII and built a life. My Dad and his dad before him were steelworkers. I watched that way of life slowly die as industry after industry starting in the late 1970s closed their doors never to return. I watched as things like CEO pay rose 940% since the 1960s and regular workers' pay rose only 40%. I lived in Europe for about 8 years and served in the US military. I took a look at how regular people lived, how did they earn a living, did they go on vacations and had time to spend with loved ones and enjoy life? How was that compared to the middle-class life I lived as a kid. What dawned on me slowly, and this is borne out by study after study, is that people in social democracies are consistently rated as happier than the average American. They work hard just like we do to make stuff and build things and have generally clean air and water and green spaces. People drive cars, shop, take vacations, eat out, etc. All the same, things we like to do, so you have to ask well if they are doing all of that yet seem to be happier while they are doing it then what are they doing? What is happiness really? Is it money or the pursuit of money? If you believe all the marketing in the USA it seems to be the undertone of everything. You can't be happy unless you are doing better than your neighbor with a bigger house or a bigger car in the driveway. Those things are nice but are these things achievable by everyone? At the end of the day is it all about being the richest man in the Graveyard? We have a lot of people making money in this country and chasing the dream, and I wonder are they truly happy? The thing they are calling the great resignation and reset in the post COVID period suggests it's not. I am not making this up. You know a thinking person doesn't just point a finger at Europe and say well over there they pay in excess of 50% of their salaries in taxes and I am against it, it's all socialism and blah blah blah, and that's bad. A better question is ok what does that mean? What do those countries offer their populations so that they consistently rank higher on the happiness scale? What's the secret sauce? if I am going to fork over 50% of my earnings in my life in taxes what am I going to get from that? Well, things like Universal Health Care, Child Care, and liberal maternity leave benefits, early childhood education, decent elder care, better public transportation systems, more broadband saturation, a better road network and power grid than I have seen anywhere, 20 days per year vacation staring out for the average worker and the list goes on and on. People in the Scandanavian countries I have visited seem to exhibit a lot less stress than the average American worker has to endure, they have more job security than the average American worker gets and in just about any measure of worker productivity are just as productive as we are in terms of industrial outputs. So what gives? I am not saying it's a system for everyone. I recognize that there are people that have strong entrepreneurial feelings that believe that if they take a risk they should reap the greater share of rewards and become millionaires. But on balance, there are a lot of people in places like Denmark and Sweden living happy lives and enjoying a lot more benefits than we seem to be getting here. They consistently rank much higher on the surveys measuring the happiness of people in industrialized societies than we do. You have to take the blinders off and ask why? You know I think that we have been sold a great deal of bullshit in our lives from Marketing and Wall Street and Politicians. We are getting to a point in America where this country seems to only work for a few and not everyone and I think that has something to do with people like Trump, who is the furthest thing imaginable from UAW Autoworker working on the line in a factory in Flint Michigan. yet Trump has tapped into a wellspring of grievance out there and my theory is it's a lot about losing our moorings to things like the life we enjoyed as kids. The kind of leave it to Beaver kind of world where Dad went to work, Mom stayed home, and one job supported a family with just a high school education. I think people are sad to see that way of life disappear (there are too many reasons for it one of which is corporate greed) but nonetheless, people seem to be in despair and willing to believe all the false prophets out there with their stupid slogans. I think these people are hopeless because nobody has shown them a way to a better life. MAGA it seems to me is about clinging to the old and wishing it would come back the way it used to be and that is totally unrealistic.
I'm twelve years your senior, this is where faith comes in. The belief in other good people are doing their small part. For fifty years you have done your part. The foundation you and I built and maintained are there for the next generation to build on. 😊💙👍

My father is Dutch. One of his brothers is quite wealthy, having had an international business with offices in 10 countries. For scale, he paid 65% in taxes at his wealthiest. He often visited his offices around the world, including the ones in the U.S. Now retired, they still live in the Netherlands, having the choice of any country in the world. I'm a 41 year old with no children. I have seen in the younger people what I was hoping my age group could do, and did not achieve. This was probably my favorite video I have watched of yours Beau. Because it keeps that glimmer of hope alive that people still want better for us all.

Whatever part of the brain that controls empathy is severely lacking in conservatives. They really have a hard time putting themselves in someone else's shoes. Just look at the torture issue and the only Republican who was against it and why. Look at stem cell research and how they were all against it except Arlen Specter, who had cancer and could benefit from it. They have to learn the hard way and even then it's not a guarantee they'll actually learn from it. They actually think a judge shouldn't have empathy.

Love and hate don't mix, so when we see a loved one upset and hateful over what we feel in our hearts should be a place of compassion and mercy love it hurts on a level so deep. My grandfather was a lifelong republican and a real hothead sometimes and quite bigoted other times.
Near the end of his life he did change though and most of what he was left with was just the love for his family he never learned how to express very well. I pray your family members have a similar change.

I too went to Catholic school, but only 1st to 8th grade. My Mom made me. And I got a great education, because Nuns don't put up with nonsense or bad grades. But when it came time for High School, I told her I did not want to go anymore. I had already stopped going to church. It broke her heart a little, but she understood. Dad was never religious, but he has always been extremely hard working and stubborn. I am real lucky, in that he and Mom, saw Drumpf for what he is. A lying, cheating narcissist. He absolutely sees Fox news as Right Wing bullshit, and he also thinks CNN is too Left in opinions. I am proud of him, and grateful, because all of my Aunts and Uncles on Mom's side, are still religious and Drumpf voters. Dad's not too fond of them now.

It's really heartbreaking, being taught all the good things you should be doing for the world and then seeing the very same people, who taught you this, not implementing those values. I've seen so many people (some relatives and friends), who I viewed as good people with beautiful hearts, completely change when TFG ran for office. I can't imagine ever seeing them quite the same. Even now, some of them may not even express themselves like the way they were when he was in office, but I know they still support him so I can't unsee it. I will continue to fight the good fight best I can. I hope this person listens to your advice and continue to go in the direction they were taught as a child continue to fight the good fight. Don't give up; the world needs people like you.

My father grew up a conservative DFL who attended a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, only to begin to shift after I - the first born - was actually born.
By time I was 12, he moved away from that church towards a ELCA branch instead.
For me.
Because that church was proving unhealthy for me.
He left the family church of generations for me.
He has drifted ever more liberal (he has been Presbyterian for decades at this point) as the DFL moved along.
At 53, my 73 yr old father is my hero.
His moral and ethical foundation has become my moral and ethical foundation.
My father has mentored troubled youth.
My father has given more money privately than many others ever bothered to give publicly.
I wish my father could see his values reflected in this current dark age.
He deems himself a "dinosaur" and opines as such privately.
He fears as I fear that we are a dying breed.
We are relics of an America that does not seem to exist anymore.

Before our last elections in summer the only political party having the guts to name the problems we actually have, was the Marxist Leninist Party of Germany. A group without any chance to come only near our parliament. The "winners" (with a relative majority of votes amongst those who voted anyway) are the social Democrats and their candidate for the position of the chancellor is awful! He played a major role in the biggest financial scandals of the last decade and the only thing he said during the investigations was: I can't remember! Holy crap this retarded guy (Olaf Scholz) becomes chancellor because his opponent is worse! It's all about ideology, not about facts or necessities. They all work for "big money" and most of them out of conviction. As a father of five I really fear for the upcoming generations!

What happened in Germany is the reason Japan and Germany were treated much differently after WWII than they were after WWI. You can see the results of that today. When you couple the population, economic, and climate crises, you are seeing just the beginning. Hold onto your hat. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

hey Beau - I think I am going to use this for the first day of my Psychology and Law class. The whole idea of the class is to teach people how to use science to address social issues. Or, it is one of the main points. This is a good place to start with a group of young people. Thank you.
This was me…my Stepdad’s work ethic and his example as a decent man shaped my Liberal ideas. And it would have frustrated and infuriated him if he’d known.
It's not always easy, but important to remember that we were all born innocent, and no one asks to be brainwashed.
I read Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" in my youth, the Baby Boom generation took it to heart as a guide to living like a hippy. Heinlein was shocked that the liberal adults were using concepts from this book to support their liberal leanings. He was shocked because he was very conservative but the ideas in his earlier books showed young people a way of approaching life in a liberal way.
It makes me wonder if the parents teaching good ideas to prepare their children for the real world similar to teaching them about Santa Claus, giving a short term fantasy to ease the children into the workings of the world.

Exactly this. I never knew how bad the rot was until he came along, how heartless, easily manipulated, overly emotional, and scared everyone truly is. I'm that drop of progressive in a sea of red. My dad, brother, aunt, and a distant uncle are all democratic/progressive, everyone else (friends and family) drank the kool aide, and I've noticed it's only my brother and I that challenge everything, but it always falls on deaf ears. Everyone I looked up to, respected, and admired are just shadows of their former selves. They look the same until they start to speak, then their faces mockingly twist and sneer in ways I couldn't have imagined growing up, yelling about people they've never met or parroting the dog whistle of the day. There is no spell they're under, nothing is going to snap them out of it, I see it all like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and know we have to deal with this for far longer than I would like, guesstimating at least another 20 years. Just try not to lose yourselves in this fight or it'll all be for naught.

I identify as a black woman and my husband is a white male. His parents are conservatives and it’s been really rough on both of us having different political and religious views. I know they love me and I love them as well but they still support and parrot the Far Right ideology, and that has caused a drift in our relationship and it’s mostly surface level now sadly…

As a Hindu living in this beautiful country, this letter hits home. I don't think it is the religion but how you treat people. Treat others as you want to be treated. My parents have long left this world. My friends are still fighting and still idealists. Every one should be treated with decency. Not treat one as you think they deserve.
Your message is exactly it... A preacher once told me, "Strip away all of the particularities, and boil it down to the basics, and there aren't 10 commandments: there's one commandment. That commandment is to treat people as you wish to be treated. That's the root and crown of all of the commandments, of morality in all the religions of the world. Do that one thing, and be grateful to God - that's all that God asks."
Very cool guy, this preacher: spends his life helping people and the community, and has no prejudices in so doing. Anyone who asks for help -no matter their creed, skin color, finances or social status - he helps them. He's housed the homeless in his own home, fed people who couldn't feed themselves, helped people build their houses, pay their rent, find work...the list goes on, forever. And he doesn't seek money, or power, or to convert anyone - he's genuinely curious about how other people see God(s), whether from an atheist, monotheist, or polytheist perspective - and he seems perfectly at peace having images of Jesus, the Dalai Lama, Shiva and the Buddha all hanging out together on his home altar.
Meeting him (and a handful of other religious types who walk their talk and live their faith in humble, loving, helpful ways) really shook up my view on religion and religious people, which was entirely caustic and negative up until my mid-twenties. Now I endeavor to be genuinely curious about what people think and believe, and to be open-minded and open-hearted, like I've seen modeled by my preacher friend.
Because, at the end of the day, wouldn't I want people to treat me the same way?

You are right. It's not religion behind this hate in America. It's the people behind the religion that is stewing this hate in America. There are a lot of churches, specifically evangelical churches (but plenty of others, as well) that make a lot of money from their congregation. A lot of money. AND they don't pay taxes. Those people aren't using that money for upkeep of their lands and their congregation when it needs help. It's paying for mansions and yachts, etc. They are paying a lot of money to the GOP to make sure they stay relevant, as it appears that they are losing people, and therefore they are losing money.

Holy cow, I wasn't expecting to get emotional at this, but that letter got me crying. It expresses so much of what I've been feeling myself for the past few years. November 8, 2016 was the day I stopped going to church for good. I felt such a crushing devastation of the soul that day, because it was the day I realized that everything I'd been taught to believe about being a good person was all just empty words to my parents, my fellow Christians, and my fellow Americans. It was the first time I felt true shame and betrayal from my family, my church and my country. I haven't given up on those values they taught me to believe; even if they don't really believe it, I will keep stubbornly hanging on. But I'll never get over the pain of that betrayal, either. I just wish I could make my parents understand.
Not all Americans. I'm called "humanitarian" as if it's an insult! ... Hang in there. You aren't alone. We're still here, still trying, too!
There are more of “us” reasonable people than there are of “them”. They’re loud. And they have their own media ecosystem they don’t seem capable of critically thinking about (since pretty much every new conspiracy theory contradicts the last), or intellectually curious enough to check up on. It’s been unfortunate to discover HOW.MANY.PEOPLE (about 1/3) have been apparently living in this state where they haven’t been able to be honest about their actual “values”. But at least it’s been laid bare now. So that’s something.
I now belong to "The Church of Holy Roman Kindness," my own church, ex-Catholic, and I've never looked back. There was a grieving period. Give it time.
A ton of the rage from the right comes from the realization that other people haven't compromised morality for practicality.
Every time you speak against injustice, what they hear is "You're a bad person you gave up."
I had a Christian conservative roommate for four years, and I absolutely identified this behavior. My presence was a constant reminder to him that he had given up, and he hated me for it. He hated me for trying to be a good person because it was a reminder that he wasn't.
It isn't just giving up: They perceive this as weakness and above all else, they fear appearing weak.
