Coaches often remind hitters to get good extension on their swings and the truth is that extension has no effect on how far a hitter will hit a baseball. When hitters make contact with the baseball, the ball compresses and bounces off the bat before hitters actually get to full extension.
In all actuality, extension is a byproduct of a hitters timing and when a hitter is on time, they will get good extension after contact and when their timing is off, hitters won’t get good extension after contact.
In addition, pitchers in the grand scheme of things are actually trying to disrupt a hitter’s timing to get them to make contact with the baseball at full extension because it will lead to weaker contact and the baseball won’t travel as far or it will cause hitters to be out in front and lead to mores swings & misses for the hitter.
