In spite of how daunting it may seem, growing your own vegetables from seed doesn't have to be hard. As growers, we're always learning new tricks and better ways to grow in order to increase our harvests and decrease our headaches! I hope this video helps you with some quick troubleshooting, so you can get your seedlings back on track.
I sure appreciate your staying on topic and amount of information in the video!
I appreciate your message, Dana. I really try to keep it to the point and not waste your time!
Thank you Valerie! I'm learning a lot.
Thanks so much, Jim. I’m glad to hear that. Have a great weekend ahead.
Now I'm thinking back on all the seedlings we attempted last year - now I know what to check for!
That’s awesome. I definitely remember some leggy nasturtiums. I feel bad we never got the good ones in the ground while I was there!
You are just full of all kinds of Great information 🤗
I am watering my starters from the bottom now and getting ready to up pot them.🌱
Aww, thanks Barb. When I find something that works, I like to pass it on. Have a great week🌱 Val

Hello.. I found your channel on BARB'S COUNTRY HOME community page.
Great video.. Thanks for this great information. 🌱
Welcome, I’m glad you found me! I’ve heard people talking about freezing seeds to preserve them, but I haven’t tried it personally so I don’t want to lead you astray.
Your videos has tremendous value! Short and sweet and right on point! Thank you!
Thank you. I’m happy you liked it
Good information!
Glad it was helpful !
I’m a new watcher here and I love your channel! Thank you for all the good information
Welcome Rachel! Thanks so much for your comment. I hope you have an amazing growing season
Oh dear!! I've experienced it all!! These are great tips! Thank you so much!❤❤❤
Hi Juani! Thanks for corroborating what I said. I hope it saves some new gardeners the trouble of having to start over!
Why can't you just start off with larger pots to start with when planting your seeds so you don't have to bother transferring them a couple of times because the pot got too little?
Great question. Here are two reasons it’s not recommended to start with larger pots. One is that potting up is believed to trigger feeder root development. Think of feeder roots as the hairlike parts of roots. These are important because they absorb water and nutrients from the soil. The second reason is that watering a large container that has only a small seedling can be extremely tricky. Practically speaking, it takes a lot of water to get the soil wet but the plant has immature roots that can’t absorb it effectively. This can lead to root rot or a waterlogged plant. All that said, it’s not impossible. I’ve started seeds in 5-gallon buckets before! However, it was a constant challenge to get the water and nutrients right.
@@NowGardening Thank you so much!!
Biggest lk dear friend! Very nice and informative video sharing thax for wonderful video sharing 🥰🙏
Thanks Aaysha. I hope you’re doing well and have a lovely week.
Thanks for help..
My pleasure. Good luck with your seedlings
Great timing! I am about to choose which seeds I am going to use this year for some of my less productive attempts (Zucchinis and Cucumbers). I like the idea of trying the 3 seed germination test. As always, Gracias!
Glad it helped, Sue. The last thing I want to do is plant a whole bed only to find out they’re duds later. I’m excited for your garden, hoping this will be your year!
Don't give up on those from just one season. I had a bad squash year last yr. Other years we have squash coming out our ears. It can be weather, timing, location, etc. Try changing some things.
Wow thank you.
You are very welcome 😊
always enjoy your videos
Thanks so much. I appreciate your support :)
very useful information for indoor planting can be an inspiration for my farm, thank you
You are most welcome. Thanks for your visit
Hi Val, I just had to resub to you because CZcams booted me off your channel, awesome video and yes my fun experiments with seeds have all had these issues!! 🌱🌿Stay well , Cheers for now. Laura 💫
Oh no, CZcams is a mysterious beast sometimes! Welcome back and thanks for finding me again 💚 Val
Such a helpful video!!! Thank you so much!!!💕🐛🦋💕🐛🦋
I'm glad it helped! And thank you for the lovely message 💚
For yellowing, I would recommend a compost tea instead of a straight nitrogen fertilizer. It has low nitrogen but has a great macro and micro nutrient addition to the mix. I use a 3-2-3 NPK compost tea. Then every 14-21 days reapply as needed.
Thanks for adding your experience and tips 😊
Great video, Valerie! You are so beautiful and informative! 😊
Thank you 😊
Great tip on the age of the seed, did not think they became unable to grow in one year, maybe it also depends on the source you bought the seed from, but germination tests solve any concerns, you are right.
I was surprised too when I leaned this. My dad in the US was having trouble germinating some of his seeds, and I took a pack of watermelons seeds and cilantro seeds that were a year old to try out. Nothing grew, not one! I haven’t had this happen in France, so I’m wondering if it’s mostly a US issue.
@@NowGardening I am trying out pansies and coleus from two different suppliers in Canada so how well they do.
Merci, à vous de partager vos conseils👍✨
Avec plaisir. Merci de l’avoir regardé 😊
Very helpful video and straight to the point.
I gave you my 👍🏼and subscribed. Thanks
Time for me to start my seeds indoor. Zone 8b
Thanks so much and welcome fellow zone 8 gardener!
Stunted but healthy plants indicates a lack of phosphorus. Phosphorus is fairly expensive, so cheap potting soil will skimp on phosphorus.
Excellent Val!! We've "ticked" every box, lol. I've also heard that temperature can affect leggy seedlings. I'm not sure if that is true, tho ?
Great, quick tips!
Have a great week Val !!
Cheers J&C 🌱🤞🌱
Thanks Jason and Colleen, and thanks for reminding me about that one. Overusing heat mats on seedlings or leaving a cover over then after germination can definitely cause them to take off (in the bad way) and become leggy. Hope you guys have a great week 💚
@Now Gardening hey wait a minute..... did I hear that from you last year 🤔🤣
I think I did , either way, I'm glad it was somehow still in my brain !! 🤣
Nice 👌
Thanks so much :)

Mine is about funny gossip 🤣
Just found you, thank you for your videos. I was wondering what zone are you in?
Hi Barbara. Welcome! We’re in the equivalent of a US Zone 8
I'm using seeds 7 years old and besides onions they germinate fine
Hi Wayne. I'm really happy to hear that. Normally, most seeds should last 2 years and some to 5, but then it gets a little iffy. I know several US gardeners who have said their seeds don't last as long anymore, but maybe they're getting old seeds to begin with or not storing them properly. I need to research this more, but I'm glad yours are doing great!
Q: Can you freeze your seeds to help preserve them?
Hi John. I think I answered this already but I’m case I’m wrong, here it goes again. I haven’t tested freezing seeds and seeing if it helps preserve them or not, so I don’t feel like I can give you a solid answer.

Thanks
@@johnbrinkworth2883 You can keep your extra seeds in the refrigerator. This helps prolong their life. I've done it for years. But its not an exact science. Some seeds last longer than others.
You look like Skyler White
I had some 4 year old wheat grass seeds that I just tested to see if they were still viable and had a good germination rate. first soaked in water for 24 hours, then sprouted by rinsing a couple of times a day and finally moving onto my planting medium which was hemp mats and kept them covered and moist. was rewarded for my efforts by vibrant growth and almost 100% germination rate. I had purchased quality organic hard red spring wheat seeds from true leaf market 4 years ago and had not used in a couple of years.
That's a great success story, Dorothy. Sometimes it really does come down to determination and willingness to babysit our seeds. I chose a difficult tomato pepper last year but was determined to grow it. From getting the seed to sprout all the way through to finally getting peppers (in December!), it was quite the experience. Not sure I'd got to those lengths again, but it was worth it for that one!
could've just stayed at home
