- How To Retrieve OEM Windows Product Key From BIOS
This is a very simple process on how to recover the Windows Licence Key from your BIOS. There is really no need to do this unless you want a copy of it. If you brought a Laptop with Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 pre-installed as a OEM licence then this video is for you. The licence key is stored in the BIOS and when your reinstall Windows the product key will activate automatically.

Yes, same. Lenovo do not provide OEM keys with the laptop. No sticker. Nothing. I have paid for the Windows Pro but could not get the key anywhere. This is a life saver. Thank you @Britec09

I'm looking to embed a new windows key to my dell xps new mother board which got replaced?
Is there a way to do it in the bios without software? I had to replace the hard drive on a friends laptop that was dead and it's not auto filling the product key and it won't let me go any farther in the windows install without the key.

But if the system failed(from formatting) and you sit in bios how can you reinstall with retrieved product key from within the bios?
My hdd has crushed having win 7 serial key embedded in the firmware. I can't install Windows on a new hdd.

Useful video. But the title is misleading a bit, meaning it recovers the key when you boot in the bios. So if the Windows / Hard disk is not booting you can't use it.
I think if you can't boot into windows u can boot to safe mode and do this trick, not sure though never tried it personally
That's true, the title could be ambiguous. I know OEM product keys are technically stored in the BIOS so I took it as that which made sense. But to most people who are not aware that OEM licence is actually stored in the BIOS (hence you can retrieve it from the BIOS), the title would read totally differently. :)
What is the name of the software you used and where can I find it? I need to retrieve my windows key.

Does this work if you already formatted your PC thinking you had the product key lying around somewhere and have already begun the process only to find out after that you lost the key? I still have the CD and the original invoice of purchase although neither of these help.
Of course it still works, the key is stored in the BIOS after all.

My hard disk crashed ... I installed a new SSD and installed Ubuntu on it... I installed windows 8 as virtual machine on the Ubuntu host... I installed ShowKeyPlus on VM. However, it shows "OEM key not present in firmware". How to retrieve the key from the VM. If it is not possible do I have to install windows as host and then retrieve the key?
so If I reinstall windows 10 pro instead of windows 10 home it will not get activated automatically unless I purchase it?
So in the case of your hdd crashing with no back up n any installation cd and no record of the OEM products key.,, what then?
right it on a piece of paper and store it in a safe place ;)

Thanks Alot!!! New win10 20H2 doesn't recognize win8 and win8.1 keys while installing from pendrive. So I had to check "i don't have a serial code" and continue installation. After I installed everything I pluged LAN and windows Activation was automatic. I think the only hard thing is to choose a correct Win 10 version (pro/home).

thanks. I bought my laptop with a widows 8 preinstalled. and I update it before for a free windows 10. now I try to use the OEM key it says it doesn't support current windows version. :(
Cliant James Moreno thats bad news I went on askleo site and he talks about making an image back up cd or usb with a certain programme of wich the name escapes me now anyhow im sure if you google 'askleo image backup tutorial' you'll find it.

I built my PC and used an OEM version of Windows 10, I am now considering upgrading the motherboard, CPU, adn RAM in a few months. Will this allow me to use my copy of windows on a new motherboard without having to buy a new licence? I also have a digital license linked to my account.
Also, if I retrieve it, could wiping my BIOS help too? If I sell the old motherboard, I don't want the buyer to use my key.
No you cant use that OEM key on any other board. Only retail version keys are allowed to be used on other boards but are very costly.

When I picked up my first custom built desktop last Monday, the tech said that when I activated Windows it would be tied to my motherboard and I would never be able to use it on another system. I believed him because I'm not particularly computer savvy. Was that the truth, or would I be able to use my Windows key again if I get a new computer later or upgrade the mobo on this one?
He did tell the truth. Your product key (unless retail version which is very costly) is an OEM key which indeed is tied with your motherboard once activated. Unless you do a major upgrade like changing CPU etc, you can use that key for reactivating only that particular board.

What's wrong with just using an elevated Command Prompt and issuing the following command: wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey OR in an elevated Powershell: powershell "(Get-WmiObject -query ‘select * from SoftwareLicensingService’).OA3xOriginalProductKey"
After clean format can we retrieve OEM key
If your doing a fresh install, windows will activate automatically
in ACPI table the OEM ID is only "Dell " no key

I need the product key so I can install windows. Your techniques assumes windows is already installed.
It tells you the pre installed os's product key that the manufacturers don't tell you. so you can use it later.

no you'll need the key because windows hardware id works of your motherboard (or cpu im no 100% sure)
