    His process is unique in several ways compared to any other I've seen, very interesting. I am guessing that the layered, folded pattern comes from the piece of metal that he forge-welded onto the larger bar at the beginning (and which must have been pre-folded in that pattern). The heating in lead bath, quenching in water and tempering in oil bath is again very different from "normal" processes. Very nice.

    Try this stuff called Polymide tape anytime you have to do a sand blasted, or line/satin finish next to a high polished surface. Polish the area you want high polished first, then put polymide tape over that area, finally apply the satin or sand blasted finish and once done just peel off the tape. It's really strong stuff and I think it will help with that last 2% of the polish your missing. Also check out this polish compound called MENZERNA. It's a German compound but it's the only thing Rolex uses to put the polish on their cases (The stuff is AMAZING)

    What steel is being used? And why do you have water on some grinders and not others? The ones without running water are still hurting the heat treatment to some extent. Especially if you see sparks.
    Also all the stress put into the blade before heat treatment causes warping, you could take out stress before the hardening to reduce warping. Probably won't be able to eliminate it all, but a large amount of it.
    Why not use liquid nitrogen in the process?

      If you’re talking about sand-like thing at 1:25, that’s flux used to forge-weld a smaller piece of steel onto a bigger and softer piece of iron to make a traditional laminated blade. The steel, which provides the cutting edge, will become a thin layer on top of the backing iron layer.

    • @sunship2
      @sunship2 Před rokem +1

      As said, its flux, to prevent oxidation between the two layers of steel, usually Borax. What the video does not show, is that he is either laying another layer of soft steel on the other side of the hard core, or folds the combination in the middle. Or maybe i'm wrong about this, because it is an one sided edge?

    • @ktkwb
      @ktkwb Před rokem +1

      @@sunship2 majority of traditional Japanese culinary knives have hard steel only on one side, sashimi knives are no exception. Sandwiching hard steel between softer layers is a technique used by Japanese blacksmiths for making Western style chef’s knives.

    • @kylewillis9238
      @kylewillis9238 Před rokem

      Steel, at its most basic level, is a mixture of two elements: iron and carbon. Combined in the right proportion, they form an alloy that can go on to become a hardened, useful cutting tool. But simply adding a little carbon to iron isn’t enough - raw steel is still relatively soft, because the carbon molecules settle into comfortable places within the alloy’s so-called ‘crystalline structure’ where they don’t have much effect on its overall strength or hardness. By heating the raw steel to a ‘critical temperature,’ the crystal structure rearranges itself, moving the carbon molecules into places where they wouldn’t otherwise fit. Then, by rapidly cooling this transformed steel (blacksmiths call this step “quenching”), the new, stronger crystalline structure is frozen in place.
