Air Filter Testing - Will BHP Increase?

  • In this video I test if a newly designed performance air filter can increase much brake horsepower vs the stock OE filter and more interestingly how much does a vehicle increase in BHP with no filter fitted - all 3 tests are done back to back in the same controlled environment, same outside temp and vehicle temp. Multiple runs on each test were done, I picked the highest recorded HP as the result for each. As there are so many variables on Dyno runs we all agree this was the fairest result for each test rather that an overall average.

    Thank you for the experiemint. I learned not to hope for a lot of hp with air filter mods.

    It’s not that surprising. With no air filter at all you’re not building any suction in the air box. The air is going to be very turbulent and the fuel won’t vaporize as well or get to the cylinders as smoothly. This would easily account for a .5 a .7 % go difference IMO. It’s like (but no where near as big a difference) as performance headers. Done right the exhaust gas expending from one cylinder should help pull gas from another. It’s a respectable gain though - thanks for sharing. It’s nice to see a straightforward no b/s comparison.
    For me, I always went tires, brakes, suspension, exhaust & intake, chip :) that’s if you want to enjoy getting around corners. Assuming it’s an auto.

    Interesting result but what about the induction noise ? What about testing with just a couple of those cheap bath sponges sprayed with MAF cleaner stuffed in the airbox ? Bet they perform just as good.

    For a filter I'd have liked to seen the results of a K&N or BMC filter that provides protection and laminar flow.

    I pulled a collapsed oil filter out of my Passat with ryco written on it. .A oily foam how long till that is blocked from Australian road dust?

    MAF or MAP sensor? Some MAF sensors need an air filter for more uniform air flow through the sensor.

    If a filter is a type of resistance. How can a performance filter be better than no filter?

    • @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage
      @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage  Před 4 lety +3

      Honestly shocked me as well, I was expecting it to be a tiny bit less than no filter, but those were the genuine results of the test. It's an extremely minute difference

      @@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage this is hard to believe for me. The assumption is that there is increased amount of air. A more scientific explainable reason would need to be explored.

      Results on a dyno have many variables, but just for discussion the wind increase flowing into the workshop may have picked up slightly, the other that springs to mind is the air fuel ratio was at a better mix with the air filter in on that particular run.
      The result is genuine and it did not bother me if the performance one was less than stock, I just carried out the test as accurate as possible under the same conditions to the best we could

      Straighter air flows faster than chaotic air. A performance filter tends to "straighten out" the airflow, allowing it to better fill the inlet tubes at higher rpm.

    Would these type of filters have any effect on the cars warrenty?

    • @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage
      @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage  Před 4 lety +2

      Not that I have ever heard. It is still a panel filter and the filtration is higher than standard so very doubtful. Also Ryco are OE approved parts suppliers.

      YES, I would say that NO air filter will definately affect warrenty.........

    I am sure that in most island countries where air is cleaner than continental places one could drive only with a piece of stainless steel net instead of filter. The thing is that more air inhaled by the engine means leaner AFR which may lead to poor performance without remapping the ecu. Since there is some flow restriction by the sport filter there is more air to the engine but just enough to avoid extra leaning. Other thing is turbulences in the airflow without vs with filter could mess a lot the AFR on naturally aspirated engines due to lack of proper fuel dispersion. But can anyone tell the difference in dynamics between 185 and 190 hp? How the torque changed?
