It's been fascinating to see them fumble the most important event this many times in a row after absolutely hitting 4x4-7x7 and square-1 out of the park.

I think it might be because there are a lot of good flagship 3x3s and a lot of good budget 3x3s. So if you want people to buy your product over all the other good ones, it needs to have something that makes it unique. So I think they're tyring to find that, but kinda failing. It worked for sq-1 and big cubes, because there weren't really a lot of good budget products (maybe for sq-1, idk), which isn't the case for 3x3.

It’s like someone in YJ was browsing the online marketplace, found those tiny ball bearings that happen to be similar size to the washers and decided to swap it out. And tada! New cube!

i actually quite like this puzzle, other than the center caps coming off during solves. i wasn't brave enough to dig deep enough to find the ball bearings on mine - so it was cool to see you find them.

A fancy washer is the last thing I expected to see as a new cube "innovation".

Nice review, I agree with everything you said just a gimmick.
I remember having noisey springs, lubed both sides of the washer, zero difference in feel.
The GAN12, has frictionless that's better than a bearing, but the real speed comes from the core magnets, allowing you to have looser tensions while still having a stable cube.
It's the reduced friction between the pieces that allows it to move fast.

Maybe it makes the springs quieter?
