This is true. It might be a snake, a rabid dog, any number of things, but, wait in the truck means “y’all stay here, don’t put yourselves in danger while I handle it”

The line when she says she didn't think her day of justice would come from a Judge under a seat. The "Judge" is a type of gun. Here in the south when someone usually says "wait in the truck", it generally means something is about to go down you don't need to be a part of.

Most men used to do this for women, until feminism killed chivalry. When my cousin got remarried, my dad who was brought up in the 40s, went up to the groom and said "if you ever abuse her, I'll kill ya." in the church, before the wedding ceremony. He then just went to his seat like it was the most natural thing to do, which it was in those days. Real men keep themselves in check, and THEN help others.

@@wolfe6220I eould have loved to exonerate him as well but two things work against him by interpretatiin of legal standards both letter and spirit: bringing the gun with him and B&E.
On the count of bringing the gun with him, that's damning, but if he doesn't shoot the guy, it can be argued as defense of another, assuming she testifies against her abuser. It might be a couple months on the intimidation charge, if that. I'd bet a *very stern*, like not just slap on the wrist, but almost cut both arms off stern, warning and mark on his record would be the extent of just that.
The B&E does him in though. Because it shows intent to harm or malice. Especially if there was a struggle. I don't believe a stand your ground statute would apply to the abuser, not the least of reasoning because he's dead, but also because of Hardy's character acting in defense of another. That would depend on how vindictive the prosecution wants to be.
Best bet he could hope for is manslaughter, but I'd bet on 2nd degree murder and by the law he would be guilty. But damn I would not want to have to pass that verdict.
He traded his freedom for hers. She was in a prison of violence and fear that he freedom her from.
I grew up with a father like the abuser in the video. The character helping knew that would continue for the rest of her life and that would be normal for her future children. I grew up around this I would get between dad and my mom and brothers. A protective order from a court is just a piece of paper it doesn’t stop physical or mental abuse

Southern Country boys don't play this s**t. Except your likely going get a spot out in the woods where not even the coyotes will ever find you. He gave up his freedom to save her from an abusive a$$hole, who would have at some point killed her. She in turn is now dedicated to him and is keeping his stuff ready for when he comes home. Hell, she even drove his truck to see him. And that "Thank You" at the ends make it all worth it.

Domestic Violence is an oxymoron.
To add to the other comments... he was not a bad man, he was not an evil man... perhaps he grew up in a house of abuse.... as he knew what had happened to her without asking... he was a man who saw a need, saw an evil and acted on that need and evil. He was a man of faith (evidenced by the court scene bridge (Oh Lord have mercy on me was not asked to the court system... it was a plea to God) and visibly evidenced by the cross hanging on his rear view mirror... was his action legal, obviously not based on the trial, was it morally just.... that is up to each individual for you cannot legislate morality... but for every victim of DV, he would be an answered prayer... and for every man... the story forces the question... "what would I do?"
I recently picked up on another aspect of the acting...you can see the transfer of 'weight' from the weight on her as a DV victim... to him, as the reality of what he did sank in looking at the body on the floor... she has her weight lifted as she no longer has to live that life... and the weight of the decision he made settles onto his shoulders, heart and mind.
