- The last challenge for the Resident Evil 4 Remake I did was, Pistols Only, and that was fun!
However, it was pretty easy considering the SG-09R is actually a solid weapon to use especially when fully upgraded!
So I thought to myself, how can I make this more difficult, sure increasing the difficulty was always an option but that didn’t seem as fun, so I thought what’s the next worst weapon after the pistol?
The Bolt Thrower of course. Can you beat the resident Evil 4 Remake with only the Bolt Thrower?
Now, as for all these challenge videos, I want to set down a foundation.
I’m going to be following the rules for the minimalist challenge, but swapping out my Pistol for the Bolt Thrower, that means the use of knives, environmental explosives and any boss weapons are permitted!
With that, let’s jump straight into the first question you most definitely have.
Since you only get the bolt thrower off of the merchant in chapter 2, How are you going to complete the first chapter without it?

Fun Fact: You don’t have to shoot Regenerador weak spots to kill them, it just deals a lot of damage to their large health pool, and they don’t actually get health back
bolt thrower on hardcore is a must imo. that weapon saved my ass so many times
If you have enough bolts and explosives, you can instantly end the chainsaw sisters fight and the big cheese fight. For the chainsaw sisters there's a lightbulb right in front of where they come in, and you can put 5 explosive bolts on the side facing the wall they come in on, which kills them even on professional. For making grilled cheese, I think it's 6 on the ground where starts the fight, and 4 on the first rafter he grabs in phase 2
I did see the grilled cheese one and i wish i had remembered close to the time but… i had 0 bolts at that point lol
The explosives went off early for me on the big cheese fight unfortunately.

The Bolter Is actually my favorite gun,yes It sucks at 1st when you have 3 bolts but once you upgrade It with more power and especially "capacity" things change, on my 1st run I had about 60 bolts when entering the castle, at the point It was my Unlimited Ammo Arrow Machine Gun...best part....I never used a single mine arrow 😅
Damn that’s insane! I completely agree though its actually very good, i enjoyed using it, even if its hard to aim at distance lol hope you enjoyed!

I was preparing myself for this challenge just now, but on ng+ and with more than 50 bolts and mines at my disposal, now i want to try a new game just like you, great video my guy
Glad you enjoyed! You can definitely do it, a lot of my run included going headless into fights and took about 5 hours to complete fully, i bet if you slowed down and planned more it would be easy!
I'd recommend if you're having as much ammo trouble with him, chill on the attachable mines. only use them for large enemies/bosses and just stick with the kneecap and kick method works like a charm.
My first playthrough I found any plagas I killed with the bolt thrower would randomly lose me a few bolts. They would just vanish forever.
So keep that possibility in mind.
The stunlock of the bolt thrower makes dealing with bigger enemies amazingly easy
I ran it as my backup in case I ran out of other ammo
Something I’ve always wanted to know is “can you beat re4 remake with out opening loot boxes 📦 “ just an idea, you don’t have to do it.

Damn professional A run would be tough! I like to do most of these challenges on Assisted or Normal, otherwise it would take ages to record and edit! I’ll definitely think about it, I’ve a few ideas so far!

Devs said long before game came out a knife only run is possible, so no crate run surely is too
The bolt thrower is my favorite weapon, or at least the most used weapon so far in the game. It can be a little finicky and that reload can get you killed, but It allows you to save a ton of ammo, and it's the only real stealth option you have.
I have seen the bolt thrower get so much disrespect and it is hands down my favorite weapon, it doesn't even come close. There is no feeling like killing a room of 10 guys and knowing you didn't waste a single resource. It's a conservationist's wet dream

People are stupid as hell. The bolt thrower is a godsend during controlled encounters with few enemies + against bosses if you're using mines
@@viktorthevictor6240 Yeah bro it is ALWAYS in my inventory no matter what other weapons I'm trying out. Bolt Thrower is ol' reliable. Breaking the little treasure cases, killing crows, setting off bear traps from a safe distance. And I think the most underrated part is the stun damage, stagger damage, whatever you want to call it. 90% of the time I hit a cow head brute with just one headshot, and he was open to melee. You can just stunlock brutes to death if you keep getting the headshots, AND you waste 0 bullets

I also use it to save knife durability with stealth. Just shoot 1 or 2 bolts in the leg, and suplex their a**. No knife needed
This is why I was excited when I used saw and used the Bolt Thrower for the first time. I knew it'd make for a super fun bolt thrower only challenge, way more fun than the pistol challenge in my opinion and such a cool weapon all around.
Bolt thrower is really a decent weapon, especially when fully upgraded, 20 shots realllly makes it easier to clear places before i have to do the bolt hunt haha

Once you have more than 10 bolts in enemies waiting to be recovered, every shot despawns a bolt
4:58 Saving the dog actually resets Gigante’s health bar, essentially giving him a free second wind. You’re better off not saving the dog if you wanna save ammo

I learned that shooting their knees with the bolt thrower is super effective. A lot of times it leads to being able to suplex them.
You need to upload the full runs somewhere. Anyone could just decide 'ok I'm going to show these 10-15 sections of the game' then just load a save file from a random playthrough, pull out the bolt gun, record a 60 second clip, chop it up in the editor and say 'omg guys this run was so hard'.

Something I want to point out in case others don’t know, but in the village fight sequence, you can actually preemptively shoot the church bell to end the encounter faster. It’s much easier with a sniper but can be done on NG if you’re really determined. The bell is located right of the mini chapel area next to the ol’ cheese watch tower. It’s hard to hit with a pistol but can be done. It makes these runs much easier Imo
1. Most everyone knows this by now, to the point where it's a common meme phrase for speed runners' chat
2. It's not possible with a pistol due to range limitations, even with perfect aim. A rifle is required.
Oh.... I used the bolt thrower through the whole game. Great item and maxed out can spam 20 bolts and destroy most enemies. My only issue I ran into was the bossman Salazar and his movement in the back of the room, lost a lot of bolts. Also the resin mine cart game. Had to use guns for those parts.
This was was main weapon my first play through. I love the bolt thrower!

Using the maxed out bolt thrower is how I got ammo for my other guns, it's great once maxed out, does like 2.40 damage and u get your ammo back (on hardcore)
On the saddler final phase, I noticed it's on a timer but damage seems to shorten the timer. Just dodging on standard took a lot of attack cycles but when I shot him the whole time on hard-core it only took a few of his attacks to get the rocket. Worth looking into
Makes sense to me. I didnt know anything when I played. On standard it took.. I think 2 broken butterfly hits to get Adas launcher

Atleast the knife is still an option. I didn't get along with the bolt thrower (even though its main selling point is that you'll ALWAYS have ammo for it, my bolts were gone in no time) I always liked the knife in the original, but in the remake it's truly a thing of beauty! As long as you're willing to spend some cash to improve the durability and repair it on occasion, it rarely breaks unless you're using it for literally everything xD

I tried to do this on my own time but I got bored of using just the Bolt Thrower before I even got to the castle. The weapon sucks ass and was so unfun to use I just stopped the challenge, so good on you for going through the whole game with it :)
The funny thing is that the mine throwing ability of the bolt thrower is insane overpowered on second playthroughs where you know enemy and boss spawns. There are a lot of bosses you can instantly kill with mine stacking in the right place, even if all of them aren't practical.

You can actually shoot the bell from the distance, to also get the Ganados away from the opening scene
But that would require the sniper rifle, so yeah.

I wouldn’t consider your run a fail if you’d shot the church bell with the pistol to end the village fight as you’re not using it to defeat an enemy.
you can't do it with the pistol anyways, only snipers and infinite rocket launcher.

Nicely done my friend. I was tempted to try this but you did it so I’m just gonna be content that someone did it. I had no clue an explosive bolt would allow you to knife Salazar twice. When I tried that it wouldn’t let me but I obviously wasn’t quick enough. I’m a huge ammo saver with the bolt gun(to where I had to use some ammo cuz my inventory was always packed) but I don’t go for head shots super often so I can nearly always get every bolt back(obviously on Proffesional you couldn’t afford not to as you really needed the stun for a melee).plus I often hit them with 1 or 2 bolts then sprint forward for knife stabs. This is my favorite RE4 video thus far. Very entertaining and you did such a good job Compressing the video and adding funny commentary. This could have easily been a 45 minute video minimum(which I would have still watched, but now I have more time to watch other RE4 videos). Keep killing it my friend you just earned a thoughtful comment, like, Aannnddddddddd a SUB SCRIBE etched and scribed into CZcams’s papyrus history book.

In fact helping the dog does regenerate el gigante´s health that’s why u never see speed runner getting him out of the bear trap + u can actually stack a bunch of explosives mines on the ground next to the door he comes out without triggering the cutscene which instantly kills him when he goes out
I really disliked the bolt thrower when I first got it. With it being a sort of "stealth-weapon" with how silent it was, I expected head shots to kill instantly for most regular enemies until I found that it took me around 3-4 bolts to the head to kill someone.
Found out about a few bolt mine strats that killed bosses instantly, but it still wasn't enough to really impress me into using it.
Seeing this video, might actually get me to use the bolt thrower in a run someday though
Yeah the bolt mine strats are pretty cool, even if its not your main weapon it can be really good to deal damage fast. Hope you enjoyed:)
you start to appreciate the bolt thrower a lot more on hardcore and professional. on professional it might take 4-5 pistol shots to stagger an enemy in the head or leg. the bolt thrower is 2-3 to the leg and 1-2 to the head. (add 1 bolt to those for island enemies).
and when you max the damage on it, the mines really become cost effecient AoE. you get four mines for 8 gunpowder. sure it uses up a bolt, but you're get 4x more explosions than say crafting 1 heavy grenade.
Have you considered making lore videos on the bosses in RE4? It's surprising how much is revealed in books and notes

fun fact dog doing his thing in the gigante fight actually resets el gigante's hp, so in most runs the dog is actually detrimental to help. It is however required to save the dog or your soul will be sent straight to hell.

I would have loved to be sitting in the room with him while he was doing this challenge, would have been entertaining and you know hilarious with the amount of deaths, stress and screaming at the game because even when you play with the best of everything the game really annoys you with stun lock, Ashley troubles and unavoidable grabs and attacks 😂
I swear every time I'm trying to get specific charms from that vending machine I get so many of those Bolt Thrower charms that I don't need. Then when you actually needed one, nope. 😄

Honestly I think in general challenges shouldn't be ran on easy mode in games, this game especially since if I recall correctly you can't buy infinite resources from the merchant on standard or higher, fully respect not doing them on hard or anything just usually easy goes too far (outright ignoring mechanics)

Going up in difficulty levels increases the health values and damage output of each enemy you fight.
so if you switched to normal it might just not be possible, depending on ammo and enemy health changes, also I think some things also suggest the knife breaks a lot faster on standard and higher

@1:00 you can also shoot the bell at the church and it ends the village section immediately and since your not shooting an enemies it should count its not really that hard to run out the clock in the village part anyway
How about go New Game+, merchant is just below the window you escape the first house. That way you can use whatever gun you want for challenge.

I see people hate on bolt throwers, but I completed my first standard playthrough with bolt thrower as my main weapon.
On the wrecking ball area you could’ve just use a couple of explosive bolts on the wall and just one hit of the wrecking ball will destroy it

I'm currently doing this challenge right now on hardcore and its really insane. I about broke my controller trying to save ashley over and over in the water room. lol
its ganado not granado, also its a garrador not a berserker, also its an el gigante not a troll
How does your merchant have an endless supply of large resources? My guy gets one in stock about every chapter, and that's it.

We feel that the Bolt Thrower is low key one of the best weapons of the game. Very versatile.
Since other weapons have more sparse ammo, can you beat the game with only a shotgun?
Fun fact, bolts do the same damage in the body as they do in the head, so you don't have to worry about headshots

You definitely can easily on assisted and standard, but like any weapon hardcore and professional, goodluck lol, boltthrower with mines and primal knife fun, since you dont have anything else but the knife and boltthrower, you get alot of gunpowder drops and more knifes to craft, combine it with the charms and you get alot more crafted.

It's possible to uncover the weak spots of a regenerator using the knife.
if you shoot the wall you can damage it so 2 explosive bolt would have probably worked
I believe you can also shoot the bell to skip the town sequence but idk if it has to be a sniper bullet. Ik that works but idk if a pistol bullet would work

I thought of a harsh run but it would either have to be a new game+ or you'd have to pacifist nearly every enemy in the whole village. Of which i would call "Dab on them haters", when you have the infinite typewriter and wearing the pinstripe suit when you go to reload leon will play an animation, i'm thinking that after every kill you must play that animation. As i think of it, maybe ahving armored ashley would be best for this as well.
I platinumed this game and only time I used this weapon was at merchants target shooting,never touched it again,felt so horrible and useless 😅
How were you so consistantly low on Bolts? With all the kitchen Knives and large resources you can get: and the fact you can pick up bolts after killing enemies: you shouldn't be low...ever. I have been using the bolt thrower on just about everything in both hardcore and standard; and it saves SO MUCH ammo. So unless you are just refusing to pick up loot - or are just mindlessly shooting bolts into places you cannot pick them up again: something is wrong by the fishfarm.

I would have preferred you showed the fight with the two chainsaw women. It's hard to know if you beat them legitimately. Also, are you playing on assisted?
I beat them with a lot of knifing, i only managed to get one or two explosive bolts in before i ran out of ammo if i recall. This is an assisted run yes. Hope you enjoyed!
