An episode of DW needs to seriously have this playing in a jazz club, just subtle in the background.
Yass!
Absolutely!
Totally
Preferably with Bill at the piano............ :-)
Absolutely yes
I imagine this is what the TARDIS lift sounds like.

Genius comment!
As a Belgian Doctor Who fan who enjoys jazz, this is sweet chocolate to my ears.
As long it's not Swiss chocolate 😁
A man of culture, I see.
Of course I read this: “As a Belgian doctor who enjoys jazz…”
Also a Belgian jazz fan, here to point out that not all of us enjoy putting chocolate up our ears - most of us do, sure, but still.
As a fan of Belgium, this was fries to my thighs and Waffles to my ears.

Gotta love a man who uses his genuinely outstanding talent to make the silliest thing ever
When something so ludicrous also happens to be brilliant.
Actually, I think intelligent silliness is like a deep massage after a muscle-tensioning day, especially with such music. He does me a great favour with his work and intelligence, and many more people to boot.
Britain's favourite long-haired bald man
Ala the Downton Abbey Jamaican Dub reggae version.
@@granthurlburt4062 After 4 plus years of maniacal insanity bordering on HELL, we seriously NEED a big draught of silliness !
Only Bill Bailey could turn Dr Who into soft jazz with a french speaking singer and make it hilarious
I'm putting this into my journal. Dr. Who Jazz Theme. Bazinga !
He also does another Dr who skit as part of a look at music in tv shows it was part of his 90s tv show is it bill bailey. Also includes starsky and hutch just brilliant.
I'm guessing most people (including myself) don't know the language very well, yet he uses enough similar phrases and the right tone to English so that we collectively can understand 'the Daleks can't climb stairs, it's a tragedy' and laugh. Amazing shit
have you seen eddie izzard's french standup? it works really well even for anglophones
El Davros
As some French bloke said, English is just French pronounced badly.
@@hutchmusician it's more like if french fucked latin, old norse, saxon, and german
Yeah, sure I can understand what he's saying. Not like I only picked up the words Davros, Dalek and Tardis or anything
I'm impressed by how much of the crowd got the Doctor Who jokes in French
I think it was jsut the fact he added French lyrics to the doctor who theme song
@@barry1369You could hear them react to specific lines. A lot of them know what "escalier" means for example, apparently.
As a hardcore fan of both Doctor Who and Jacques Brel, this is the best thing I've ever seen.
Is it funnier if you're familiar with Brel's work? I think most of us are just vibing but I'd be interested
@@matthewrandell5055 Not particularly to be honest, Jacques Brel was more of a ballad singer than jazz singer, none of his songs sound like this! It is fine to be just vibing haha
@@foad7141 good to know, cheers:')
True…
@@foad7141if we take away the walking baseline, the instrumentation & rhythm is vaguely channeling some ne me quitte pas
Edit: although he was probably taking french-language jazz-ish songs in general as inspiration, not specifically jacques brel
BILL BAILEY = Another comic funny man who is VERY smart. How he summed up the Doctor Who theme at the start is 1000% correct.
Anne Dudley there (the legend) arranging and conducting the string section. She deserves some credit too!!
I thought it was her. AON was my favourite niche music growing up.
WOAH
She is an utter legend.
It's because of Lady Anne I'm such a huge ABC fan....
@@aaronsinger Yet she got the gig and you didn't. L'injustice de cela...
The crazy thing is, as much as I want to laugh at this, because it's hilarious, I can't because I'm in shocked silence. It's incredible.
Me too. It is brilliant!
I think you might be crediting him with a bit more than he deserves.....its a jazz arrangement, not a plan for world peace........!!
''just'' a jazz arrangement, everyone is a master musician apparently
@@andymccabe6712 No-one claimed it was anything close to a plan world peace or that however good they thought of this that it transcended beyond music and piece they were listening to.
EXACTLY!
Bill Bailey is a national treasure.. brilliant.
Just loving this!
Let us poor sods on the outside have some: he is an international treasure❤️
I'm a Swede who have seen his show in Australia so he is wonderful anywhere for anyone😊

@Michael Adam yeah, he just started 😂
@@bennylloyd-willner9667 Nice of you to say so, Sven. Oh, I mean "Benny." (Sorry about that.)
This just shows how phenomenally talented he is. The way he is able to make this work across genres and mediums.
The DW theme has notes of urgency at the beginning, then spacy theremin sounds throughout. A bit like the Twilight Zone theme. No wonder Bill Bailey found it " intimidating ".
This song is dedicated to everyone with O' Level French
Brilliant example of "Its not what you play,it is how you play it"...loved it
I only ever knew Bill from his antics on QI, I never realised he was such a talented musician. Thanks Royal Opera House
He toured as a concert pianist prior to his comedy career!
This was filmed at the Royal Albert Hall.
I would recommend his tribute to kraftwerk.
on the one hand I know "chef du Dalek" means "chief or leader of the Daleks"; but on the other hand, I can't help seeing Davros with a frying pan.
Davros would make Gordon Ramsay look like Jamie Oliver on MDMA.
"This chicken is raw!"
"Yes, Chef! Sorry, Chef!"
"You were trying to kill me!"
"No, Chef! No! No!"
"Exterminate! Exterminate!"
"NOOOOoO" * Tzap * "ooooooo...."
Many years ago I heard Davros described as a scrotum on a commode
le chef des daleks s'appelle davros.
il ressemble à un scrotum sur une commode
GENIUS, simply GENIUS
Going to need Bill Bailey make an appearance in DW now as a serious character written by Russell T. Is it me though or could the strings from this piece be definitely used in a spy-thriller episode ala Bond Meets Blue Box. Sounded spectacular
Yeah, it sounds like something playing during a 007 movie scene, with Bond sipping a martini and just observing the surrounds.
Bill was in a Christmas special already, iirc. Of course, that doesn’t prevent him being in another episode.
@@enilenif he was I forgot he was in The Doctor, The Widow & The Wardrobe (can you blame me for forgetting that though 🤣). I think he needs a proper role now though. As a lifelong fan he can bring an honesty and fun to an episode that we really haven’t seen in the last few years.
Or even as The Doctor?
@@yolandasamuels3213 yes please!!
I love it when Bill Baily does his versions of tv theme tunes. However , this arrangement is fabulous.
I'm gonna look up Bill Baily after hearing this. I'm impressed.
*Single handedly*, making Belgian jazz relevant.
Two of my favourite things: Doctor Who, and bill Bailey's comedy
I do not remember watching this, but CZcams did (it was marked as viewed). This is brilliant. Big respect to Bill Bailey and the orchestra. This is not cheap comedy, this is not stupid mockery, this is ART. Thank you. I am truly grateful for this thing called the Internet, for this CZcams, for everything, which made me experience this brief moment in space and time. I am truly amazed. Best wishes to all the wonderful people on this world we all share.
This is the best video on CZcams, hands down! I want a special episode featuring Doctor Qui as a suave spy who defeats the Daleks due to their inability to climb the stairs lol
Maybe an amalgamation of Doctor Who and Hercule Poirot.
Dr Qui avec TinTin dans Le Mystere de l'Hôpital Nairobi.
... ELEVATE ...
The composition/transition was... brilliant. Spot on, and the arrangment, instrumentstion, the rythm, all of it... very good comedy AND o so nice cool jazz rolled into one. Sheer genius. Bravo. Bravo.
Victor Borge, or Thom Leherer
Belgian jazz, not cool jazz. West Coast cool is a different vibe
@@jackphantom yeah yeah yeah, potato potaato, no accounting for taste. To each his own (vibe). 😜
@@theobolt250 The amount of times I've tried to find "cool jazz" and someone's put up "smooth jazz" or some fusion crap they thought was "cool" irks me. Stickler for correct terminology for a reason.
I would love to see an episode of Doctor Who that used a theme like this as part of the opening scenario - something like a 1930s jazz club being invaded by the monster of the week then leaping into this theme rather than whatever is being used at the time.
That would be awesome. Coincidentally, I recently rewatched The Man With The Golden Gun, which includes the film's theme tune in-story in a Wild West piano style, so I've been thinking about this kind of fuzzy boundary between theme tune/score and music that's meant to be within the created world. Make it stylised enough and it can definitely work.
It sounds like a 60s detective show to me. This man is a musical and comedy genius, the likes of which I don't think we've ever seen before, and never will again. A bonafide one off.
Little known fact, the doctor was not only instrumental in the formation of belgium but also subsequently created belgian jazz!
Beautiful and hilarious! 🥰 I want this as a single…
Yes!
@@jamesbullo I agree.. it's too good to be left as it is. Maybe Bill could produce a whole album .. do some more SF themes. You know, one of those projects done for the joy of it. Certainly, on viewing this, there is as much enjoyment on stage as in the audience.
Where do we sign up for our copy?
From the video description: "In Summer 2021, Bill Bailey performs an eight-show residency at the Royal Opera House".
As someone who has loved and appreciated this genius individual (and genuinely nice bloke) for decades now, that is such an awesome and well-deserved resumé line.
And this clip is such an utterly perfect demonstration of why. Bravo Royal Opera House, Bravo!
My God he's talented. That was astonishing.
Bill Bailey is an absolute musical genius. Love this. C'est fantastique 😂
I'd pay for a full version of this song. Ideally 6 minutes plus with some real riffing in there.

Sometimes I marvel at how easy orchestral performers make this look. While it seems they’re the ultimate in disinterested professional session artists, I hope they have a little fun as well. Probably earn way more kudos with their kids for doing one Bill Bailey show than an entire career at Symphony Hall.
As a Doctor Who fan of roughly 30 yrs, this is the perfect clip to run into while drunk and hi. Magnificent.

Not only is this man very funny, but also a very accomplished musician. To make comedy from both and do it so perfectly is just brilliance.
Attention BBC. Bill Bailey must now make at least a cameo appearance on Dr Who. Knowing Bill, maybe a whole episode.
He's been on it, back in Matt Smith's era.
Exquisite scoring and arrangement. When that walking baseline first came in I knew exactly what we were in for. 😂 And his facial expressions on the little chromatic accidentals crack me up. 😂😂😂 Musical comedy at its best.
you know the crowd is middle class when everyone knows enough french to find this funny
Doesn't the UK school system require people to take French or something, though?
@@mjlim6610 Not for a long time. Some kids do one language, some do another. So one of my kids did all Spanish, the other did all German, because they were different ages. Made sense when we were in the EU I guess, but now they'll probably move back to everyone doing the same language, which most likely will be French. Again.
Maybe, maybe not, I did French and German at school and Spanish wasn’t offered, but some of my friends who went to well nice schools only did Spanish
@@mjlim6610 yeah but learning french from school is like shoving a building-sized square into an ant-size hole. i did 5 years of french and only know the basics of the basics, nothing even anything close to understanding more than 30% of the words in a given sentence.
