"He had a bit of talent."
Bill Bailey on Mozart - 2019.
Just wanted to comment about it, but here you are. :D
So funny.
I thought it was wierd comparing the two. I mean he is a great musician, but he ain't no Bill Bailey.
That's not really what he said.
I mean, he's not wrong
Bill seems like the sort of person who'd live in a huge toadstool, with windows in the stem and a chimney in the cap, and would emerge from it occasionally to impart wisdom.
That is a perfect summation of him!
Tantalus
The Dali Farmer. Cheap cider and wisdom.

@@ProjectFlashlight612 OK, I stole it from QI.
Wouldn't Bill Bailey be the coolest music teacher?
Who could pay attention to the lesson?? He's too captivating.
His music teacher was the same as mine (there for 20+ years!)
@@zyxibule That's awesome!
But were they always going on about "this other" student of theirs? With perfect pitch, an amazing sense of humor, and moving "with the silky precision of a crab"? Because that is a hard act to follow
I would pay so much money to have Bill as my music teacher
Tim Moore - yes, he was called Ian Phipps and was at King Edwards Bath
I could listen to this guy for days and not get bored.
The way he still enjoys music while explaining and living in the magic of it is just so inspiring and wholesome.
Bill is a Renaissance Man. So talented, so funny, very intelligent and a lover of nature and animals.
thank you for the awesome words, love & recognition, I am captivatedđ. Where are you watching fromâ€?
Bavarian milking song... That floored me!!
same here man, I loled so hard my daughter upstairs woke up
yeah he just slipped that in quickly and I died.
I was literally swallowing coffee at that point. It wasn't pretty.
Best thread in the whole internet :) :)
Oh Christ!! Nearly pissed myself laughing...
No doubt Rachel Riley is avidly watching this.

Bill Bailey is an international treasure. Just one of those irreverent geniuses that comes along every now and again.
Had the pleasure of seeing him do a show live a few years back. Massively talented and funny man. NO profanity whatsoever. Just talent by the bucketload.
I wish this was longer than 11 minutes.
Tommy Kelly if he was my music teacher Iâd never miss a lesson
You need to watch "Bill Bailey's Guide to the Orchestra"
Watch his DVD " Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra " its basically this for 90 minutes.
And like 50 ads?
@@mikeb3172 you need to find a better way to watch stuff man
Bill Bailey is an absolute genius.
His music skill is unbelievable and unmatched in my opinion.
Add that to his comedy and he is one of, if not the, best entertainers of the last 50 years.
Amazing.
LONG live Bill Bailey.
My jaw has been dropped, and there is no picking it back up. This man is incredible. Love his comedy and only recently discovering he is a musical genius too.
I mean if you love his comedy you'd already be aware of his musical prowess.
@VVoOê»F No sir. I've seen him on TV doing other stuff like 8 out of 10 cats does countdown, black books and QI. He's hilarious. Then I discovered the musical stuff.
The like me like me like me Iâm the major key hahah
I want a movie where Bill Bailey is a woods dwelling hermit that saves the world.
If only it were longer, I could watch hours of this
Just Bill Bailey being prompted with questions, holding court at a piano
You could just watch it on repeat. Doesn't need to be longer.
Thereâs no comparison regarding bill baileys way of portraying the magic of music to suit context.
Having watched 'Black Books', and there's that one episode where Bill Bailey's character is a musical genius, having never touched an instrument. It's so wonderful to find out he's actually an insanely talented musician.
If you haven't managed it since you posted this five months ago, find his stand up shows! Part Troll is the most famous one.
I can watch that whole thing with the spoons with him inside the piano over and over, laugh like a drain every time
Oh, the gorgeous irony of the questions being presented with the hold music that Bill so dearly hates.
And it's so much louder than the rest of the video, too!
Anyone else think Bill is just a incredibly intelligent and interesting person. The way he can just go between so many styles of music, so amazing to me.
There's just something about Bill Bailey. He just has IT. Musician, comedian, knowledgeable but carries his intelligence and education lightly. The kind of man you'd love to spend an evening with, over a few after-dinner drinks, having a wide-ranging discussion about myriad subjects.
"Love Me Love Me Love Me Love Me
I'm the Major Key!!!!"
Now I know I'm a human in the Major Key, ha!
i just read that last sentence in major key as well... dafuq is this sorcery.

This guy is hilarious :)
I have had the privilege of seeing Bill Bailey live at the concert hall in Perth Western Australian.
He was absolutely brilliant!
A fantastic multi instrumentalist, and utterly hilarious to boot.
A wonderful night, never to be forgotten.
A minor described as 'C major's shadow' was simply wonderful
National treasure gets chucked around alot these days.. but this man..
When he did "somewhere over the rainbow" about 5:50, my eyes welled up. WOW.. a music appreciation masterclass.
Bill Bailey - the Victor Borge of our age. What a star!
Best compliment I could imagine! :)
I'm ok with that usually I would say he's stealing his act,but I think he pulls it of well
I like Bill, but surely that title belongs to Tim Minchin.
@@RikardPeterson No, Bill is actually funny.
@@RikardPeterson That comparison makes no sense whatsoever.
As much as I love Tim;
1) He is a songwriter. VB was not.
2) He does not riff off other people's music. VB did.
3) He is not a (spoken) comedian. VB was.
4) He is Australian. VB wasn't.
Bill, however, has all the traits VB had. And before you say he's not Australian, Bill is soooo talented, he can be from anywhere he chooses to be, IMO.
I'm a huge fan of Bill Bailey, not only is he a brilliant comedian he's a gifted and talented musician who can play so many different instruments and write music!!
And he's a really, really nice guy!
I couldn't disagree more. Because you are right.
Turns out he can dance a bit too.
why has this guy not released a legit album of tunes, love the jazzy funk sound of London
If Bill was everyone's music teacher at school we'd all play piano this well. National treasure â€
I really like this video, but I don't understand why the questions are considered random. They seem thematic and thought-provoking. I think random questions would be more like, Bill, using music, answer the following: When was the last time you ate a grape? What does it feel like to hold a pencil? What are your thoughts on argon? The chosen questions were creative, relevant, and made a lot of sense.
Plekhanov to be honest when I clicked on the video that's what I was hoping for haha
Of course it's not random. Asked for the sound of 1985 he said "Take on Me." Next he was asked for Tchaikovsky's version of "Take on Me." No. Not random at all.
"Is it easier being French?"
Sadly, I think random has become one of those overused words
i feel like he would have answered those questions expertly tbh.
This man is an absolute genius.
John Johnson true genius would be to conquer death for everyone either fears it or wishes to avoid or postpone it. They plan everything around it - before it strikes them.
But then it would not be genius but rather hidden knowledge.
Being a Genius doesnât get you anywhere. Thinking ON death CAN.
Be like Jesus
I'm not sure what you are trying to say, because all you've written is incoherent babbling. Either stop taking the medicine you're on, or increase the dosage because you clearly need to get better.
John Johnson are you an atheist to say âtake your medsâ in a negative sense as contrasted with a cancer patient that is required to take meds?
You may not be bright enough to understand what i said - that is a possibility. The other you canât handle the truth of my comment.
Is Beethoven a genius? Do you even define it correctly?
Not sure how you are connecting medications to atheism, but that just proves you are in need of help. As does your original statement that the only merit for one to be called a genious would be if they were able to live forever.
Judging by your pathetic videos, you are clearly a jealous piano player wannabe (clearly, that'll never happen for you), with a truly stupid expression and huge manboobs. And you're aging horribly. I know it must be tough to face the fact that you're still a virgin at your ripe age of 43, but you have to let it go. Or just go and fuck a local hooker already, though with the way you look they'll probably ask you to pay a little extra. And don't try to get a discount using the excuse you have Asperger's.
And yes, I am an atheist, same as all other rational people on the planet. You must be very grateful to your god for having created you with a retardation. It's always like that - the biggest morons on the planet are always the first ones to buy into the religious crap. Do you also believe in Father Christmas and the tooth fairy?
Don't forget to take your pills tonight. :) You must have some left stashed somewhere in that pathetic dingy basement room of yours.
John Johnson you are so insecure, you have a lot of hate.
The emperor in star wars would have made a great student of you. Where Luke failed, you succeeded.
Oh, btw, your response was misguided. I did not âtryâ to connect medications with atheism.
Your rejection of my mentioning âJesusâ DID this. Someone who rejects Christ HATES Christ. Anti-Christ.
If I have manboobs, my FOCUS can remove them. If you know me personally, you know I like exercise.
I believe I WILL change the approach of pianists and musicians in general.
I have sight-read 8500 videos. I have the LARGEST repertoire by any musician including Richter or John Ogdon. They were sight-readers.
You are not a pianist for you would have realised that my position i was sitting at was wrong in my earlier videos and I had not played any exercises. my recent videos shows this. All i need to improve on is tempo.
If I lived for a 1000 years I'd never be half as talented as this man. =( Fantastic musician and wonderfully nice all round guy. Never change Bill.
This man is officially a National Treasure.
Saw him in Norway recently, it was like laughing for the first time.
"Like me, like me, like me, like me, I am the major key!" đ
The Bavarian milking song is a FANTASTIC symbolism or metaphor, almost a synesthesia, in some way. Beautiful set, Bill.
" 'likemelikemelikemelikeme i am the major key :) âš' and im like No BaCk oFF I SaY "
Most underrated musician of our era
the guy just can't help himself, it's easier for him to play it to you than explain it verbally. genius in pyjamas!
"Mozart: He had a bit of talent he didn't know what to do with" - Bill Bailey.
LOL!
bills fav note is often used in trailers at the beginning.
Also my favorite note, but a4
sony intro
I noticed that, I was trying to remember examples. Not the exact note but: Force Awakens, Infinity War, Endgame, Midway
Well noticed. I'll never be able to hear this in a trailer again without thinking about Bill.
Oh yea! I knew it was familiar from somewhere
What a complex and masterful musician he turns out to be!
I will never forget when he was under the piano playin for Fran in Black Books. One of the funniest moments ever on telly.
Agreed, it absolutely killed me with the surprise and his expression...and it pops in my head about once a week
And the SPOONS
Can we have more Bill bailey on classic FM please?
Bill Bailey is a human being that just makes the world a better place
"Black Books" is my only exposure to Mr. Bailey and that was only a couple of years ago. I have missed a lot.
His first TV was 'Is It Bill Bailey?' for the Beeb decades ago, then he had a small part in 'Spaced' s Simon Pegg's boss at the comic shop. Cosmic Jam was his first stand-up release followed by others and he's turned-up on QI quite a lot.
I new Bills stuff before Black Books so when the show came up with the piano in it I new it would be hilarious.....and it was!
Watch one of his live standup DVDs, my fave is Tinselworm. The man is a comedic genuis
Part Troll is really good too.
All I can say is; 'Enjoy!!!!'
I had a music teacher who once compared Mozart to The Beatles, in that on the surface, their music seems quite simplistic, and 'popular' for the time, but one you start looking into it, there's actually a lot of thought gone into the music and a lot more going on behind the scenes.
The music teacher we don't deserve. This part troll is simply admirable
the on-hold music hes describing is the hold music for HSBC customer services.
Why would ANYONE wait to have anything to do with Highly Suspect Banking Criminals? HSBC are liars, thieves and fraudsters.
Bill banks at HSBC. haha.
I hope Bill takes the time to refine his "Take On Tchaikovsky".

I can listen to Bailey making musical jokes all day.
Bill is a truly joyous human being.
the best are his face expressions when he plays... he is a fantastic musician
Okay but seriously...this guy is an amazing musician
I could watch him riffing like this all day
Bill does not get enough appreciation. Thank you for all you do sir
I love that you can hear the camera man trying not laugh. đđđ
Why did I cry when he explained why he likes Over the Rainbow
He has the soul of a poet and he's been squeezing it to make it squeak for years.
I'm not one for overpraising people - even Bill who I've been a fan of for a couple of decades now - but (and he does have a piano to help) holistically, the structure, demonstration, pacing and storytelling of his answer to what song he would be (Debussy's first Arabesque) is one of the most elegant, respectful to the interview, and satisfying answers to a question that I have ever heard in my life.
The "hold" music in question one is indeed used by HSBC and is called "Winning Teams" - it was originally used by them for an all-staff event (all UK and Channel Island employees of HSBC had to attend, on a rolling basis over about six months) where they spent a day depressing them about how they had failed their customers in various different ways and what they could have done better.
From there it got re-purposed (via "Winning Teams 2") to be the new "hold" music for HSBC (presumably they had paid for it as a one-off payment in perpetuity) - and therefore saved the bank a shed-load of money. And it still is!
hi Rachel Riley nice to see youâre watching this again
A true and affable Renaissance man.

The comedy, the intellect, the music and the charm. I can watch this man for hours. And I have! Like many here I wish this was longer. A lot longer :)
Wow, Bill is so much more than the things we admire him for.
What do you mean? He's a musician first and a comedian and actor second.
I disagree - this is exactly why we admire him, and the reason he became famous to begin with. His wildlife shows on the other hand... meh.
Check out his early stuff, mate. ;)
His appearance on Des O'Connor was quality - so stoned he could barely open his eyes. đ
Tbh I knew he was into his music but I never knew to this extent. You can see how much he loves playing and talking about music here without the pressure to also make jokes at the same time.
Gumpy 49 is a superb guitarist, bassist, plays the glockenspiel, and the bells, piano, organ, with pedals, and violin and banjo.
tomroberts101 you say meh.. but he is a dedicated environmentalist, and loves wildlife. He's also a brilliantly gifted historian, and makes documentaries. Have you seen his documentary on Alfred Russel Wallace and the the history of Evolution? It was brilliant.
So I think he's a gifted documentary maker and wildlife lover. I admire him for that.
Bill playing Take on me is something I wasn't expecting
Once I was on hold so long, that I asked them to hold and played the same thing back. They didnât even last a minute! Worth it!
Heâs a genius and a beautiful soul.
Unbelievable talent Bill Bailey.. probably the hardest working comedian and musician out there.
Woah, I did not expect him to play such a nieche piece there at the end, one which I also happen to like very much! If anyone's wondering, it was Klaus Schulze's Quintet for Lute.
I would love to see him as Tom Bombadil.
Brilliant lol. More Bill Bailey please, and make him Prime Minister too if you can :D
Gets my vote! đ
I'd love to see him as Speaker shouting "Order! Order!" at everyone.

I love playing Debussy's Arabesque No 1. My dad used to play it when I was about 7, and I'd hear him when I was falling asleep. Beautiful piece.
Bill Bailey on Black Books is one of those tv gems I often return to for a laugh. Genius!
"Mozart, he had a bit of talent" - understatement of the year right there.
Don't quote part of a sentence. That's completely pointless.
Well- Wolfgang Amadeus hadn't the Talent, that Nannerl had. But then again, he's got the BDE.
clearly this would be a British Bit, which is rather larger than other bits. Such that -40 temperatures are "A bit Chilly"
I want to get that London song so badly now.
So fecking good
The guy is an absolute genius!
That description of his favourite note was hilarious I laughed out loud
A message to the editor: good job!
Bill Bailey and piano: you KNOW, you're going to laugh. The hardest I ever laughed was when he did song variations in a show of his I went to. I almost fell over the balcony rail.

The man's a genius.
I too agree that there is not enough harpsichord out there in the world.
Actual Living Satyr Bill Bailey
It's nice when you hear the "what's the most beautiful melody?" question and you think the same thing as Bill Bailey before he says it (Somewhere over the rainbow). Such a classic. Anyone can make a nice melody with harmony, but those ones that don't need harmony are a lot more rare.
in total awe of this man - hilarious and an extremely gifted musician :)
Did anyone else get strong Stevie Wonder vibes at 10:20
I once stubbed my toe, immediately overcome by the second phase of Tchaikovsky's career. Fortunately, I found my rage to be infantile... futile... and as the clouds broke above me for a blue, late-evening sky, the Vince Guaraldi Trio overtook any platitudes I might otherwise have experienced throughout the whole of this simple yet existential event. Nothing really.
I bet Bill Bailey could put that character arc to music on the spot.
I, for one, definitely agree about using the harpsichord for 'on hold' music.
The best hold music I heard was not a piece of music at all, it was actually an audioplay recorded specifically for the theatre I was calling. So you called them and you would hear: "But professor, the corpse was found in the middle of the empty pool, how could the victim have ended up there?" - "Well, the pool could have been filled at the time he dropped into it." - "But wouldn't he have drowned rather than have died from a crushed skull if that was the case?" - "Maybe, but it could be that the pool was filled with something else instead, for example with honey, in that case he would be..." - "Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, what can I do for you today?" - ".......what the hell was that?" - "Oh, you mean the hold recording? That was an audioplay we commissioned. Want me to switch you back to it?" - "No, but... that's a GREAT idea..." - "Yeah, we know. Our records show that people call at 3am just to be able to listen to the rest..."
@@CalmCaterpillar now I want to hear the rest
Gotta love Bill, he's an insanely talented musician and comedian. I could just sit and listen to him read the phone book and find him entertaining.
I know very little about music but Bill always makes me come away feeling like I understand it just a little bit more without feeling like he is talking down to the music illiterate. A very rare gift he has indeed.
