- A major car accident leaves a woman and her little girl in a critical state, their lives are in Gabriela and Leslie's hands.
Season 1, Episode 1: Pilot
When a fire claims one of its own, there’s plenty of guilt and blame to go around. Lt. Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), in charge of the Truck, tries to carry on, but butts heads with the brash Lt. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) of the Rescue Squad - and each blames the other for their fallen team member. Adding to the turmoil, Casey, unbeknownst to his colleagues, is in the midst of a separation from Hallie (Teri Reeves, “Three Rivers”).

If anyone is wondering about what happened to the girl-
The blunt force trauma from the collision caused fluid(air/blood) buildup in the pericardial sac around the heart causing it to compress the heart which leads to Beck’s triad- Distended neck veins (hence paramedic said look at jugular), muffled heart sound’s because of fluid buildup, reduced blood pressure because the heart fails to pump due to compression by the fluid surrounding it.
So the paramedic did a procedure called pericardiocentesis where she injected a needle through pericardial sac to leak the fluid out of the sac thereby reducing pressure on heart. She went too far ahead and hit the heart & later pulled it back.
So to dumb it down. The situation for the heart to beat was similar to trying to blow up a balloon in a vat od really thick custard. The heart had no room to move in.

I mean, that’s what kids do. I remember when I was a kid and I was asked that it would annoy me because I was in lots of pain and couldn’t think straight on where it was so would just give a very broad general location.

That doctor was nice comforting her as best he could quickly
paramedics have a lot of stress on the job especially that they are the first to see the person also gabby shouldn't have left she was like the main character and a good character its went a little dead now that she has left
I actually hated her character near the end, could not stand how they chose for her character to deal with her pregnancy loss, she just came across as selfish in the relationship with Casey.
If I were Gabby, I would be stressed overload
A lot of EMS medics actually get to having such problems due to calls like these.

If it's going too quickly, it won't have time to fill properly so circulation will be impeded as a result. The run of rapid PVCs that happened when Gabby hit the child's heart were the ventricles beating rapidly and out of sync with the atria which can be fatal if it goes on for too long.
