  • I had no clue about EFI outboard boat engines, and I want to share in a few minutes what took hours for me to find out on the interwebs. Turn the volume up, apparently I am soft spoken...

    David. You did it. You showed me exactly what I needed to know (that main fuse) and I was able to get my EFI Merc back up and running. Thank you so much. I couldn't figure it out and you had the answers. Thank you. Another CZcams success story. Knowledge is Power.

      I'm curious, did the engine crank but didn't start? I seem to have fuel but it just cranks and cranks. I just put it away for the night or I'd try it right now.

    David, I have the exact same motor and was wondering if you had any issues with the throttle cable having slack in it. Meaning after putting the motor in gear and pushing forward on the throttle, it takes quite a bit of forward throttle movement before the motor actually spins up and engages to increase the RPM. I'm having this issue right now; trying to figure out how to get the slack out of the throttle cable.

    • @davide.anderson8507
      @davide.anderson8507  Před 28 dny

      I never needed to explore that issue and don't have the boat anymore.
      I know that on cars and motorcycles there is always a threaded adjuster, usually near the intake throttle body.

    I just bought that exact boat and motor last week your video is quite helpful. Did you get it running and do you like it. Mine was running smooth then cut out. Not getting fuel, but I think it may be the fuel line.

    • @davide.anderson8507
      @davide.anderson8507  Před 4 lety

      Yep, I got it running fine. Had to clean ALOT of bad fuel out of the lines and disassemble the fuel injectors and soak them in carb cleaner after removing all O rings, as carb cleaner will ruin rubber.
      After a summer's use, the water impeller failed, so that was the next fix, Apparently impellers only last a few years before they rot..

      @@davide.anderson8507 thank you... Mine ended up being the fuel tank and line pretty easy fix. How fast will yours run, mine goes 27-30mph with me ( 250) and my son ( 165) but takes almost a full 60 seconds if not more to get there... Wind and chop slows it down considerably. Does yours excelerate quickly, or is it slow to get up speed like mine.... I have no frame of reference to determine if I have a problem or not.

      @@greggt.3784 I'd say that sounds about normal, although we rarely do high speeds in our lake due to all the flooded timber. It's a pretty small engine that's being asked to do alotta work.

    Did you get it running. I heard stories of people frying the ECU by hooking the batterie charger up the wrong way. Most cases the rectifier goes bad.

    • @davide.anderson8507
      @davide.anderson8507  Před 4 lety

      I used to work on motorcycles and have hooked up batteries the wrong way many times, never fried an ECU.
      This Mercury ECU is fine, regardless of the guy drunkenly hooking up the battery backwards...

    Would you mind sharing how you went about cleaning out the old fuel? Mine won’t start and seems to be a fuel problem.

    • @davide.anderson8507
      @davide.anderson8507  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Nate. I had to remove the aluminum colored unit that houses the high pressure fuel pump. Drain out all bad fuel from that, and the fuel filter, all the fuel lines, and the fuel injectors. The injectors were clogged up with gummy old fuel and had to be carefully disassembled and soaked in carb cleaner for hours.
      The high pressure fuel pump was so clogged with old fuel gum that I couldn't salvage it and had to buy an aftermarket one. I posted another video about that.
      If you're not an experienced mechanic with all the miscellaneous tools, it would probably be easier for you to take it to the professionals and pay the bill. It took me DAYS of trial and error to get this thing running. Bonne chance.
      Dave

      @@davide.anderson8507 thanks for the reply and the info. We pulled the housing for the fuel pump and the float was stuck in the closed position due to sitting for so long and the gas must have dried on it. Pretty easy fix.
