      I think you're right. All kinds of aspects of this could be explored, within the arc of a heroic journey by the black woman into white society. But also, the inner white girl should learn why her "client" is the way she is and have HER consciousness raised. It really could be great. Right now seems to be the time when that movie could really be pertinent and, if done right, hugely popular!

    This video made me laugh so hard because once when I lived in LA, I saw a black man talking to himself really loudly and a security guard came up to him and tried to get him to quiet down, and the man said, “Why are you coming up to me? Because I’m black??” and the security guard said, “No because you’re talking to yourself.”

    • @quantumperception
      @quantumperception Před 7 lety +42

      ***** I like that you dropped the mic, even though you totally missed the point. It isn't that white people can't go to jail, it is that black people get locked up for shit that a white person would not (at the very least, they are dealt with more harshly). Reese Witherspoon went to jail for DUI; the sketch involved her getting angry and loud, which might not get Reese picked up, but would be enough for Leslie to get picked up. The whole point was that if they both acted a certain way, the white girl would be fine (and most likely placated), whereas the black girl would likely face trouble with the police for acting that way.
      Oh, and also... (mic drop)

    • @quantumperception
      @quantumperception Před 7 lety +8

      ***** You were the one changing the discussion. I made a comment regarding race, and you brought sex/gender into it. Sure, women have it harder than men in many ways in our culture, but I never said differently, though you argue against me as if I had (I am not your straw-man). I pointed out that, contrary to your assertions, black people have it harder than white people- men & women both. Women having it harder than men doesn't change my point, and is just you trying to change the subject. Do you have any evidence/facts to back your assertions up, beyond celebrity anecdotes? I can point to numerous sources on opposite sides of the issue, who all tell the same story regarding my claims (to varying degrees)- black people have it harder than white people. Do you have any sources on how white women are not privileged when compared to black women? Again, not a single case, or a handful of incidents (anecdotes), but a statistical study, scientific survey, or peer-reviewed paper? Lastly, you began the "do your research" jabs, so I find it funny that you say not to lecture you about educating yourself- especially because you seem to speak on things about which you know nothing/very little.

    • @nonaide
      @nonaide Před 7 lety +14

      White women are def more privileged than black women. Your logic: Racism against black people definitely exists, sexism definitely exists, but people who experience sexism and racism (black women) have just as much privilege as people who experience sexism, but no racism. That makes no sense. White women are paid significantly less than white men, but black women are paid EVEN LESS than white women according to the same statistics.

    • @quantumperception
      @quantumperception Před 7 lety

      IAmBefore If your comment is directed towards me and my original comment, then I think that you misunderstood me; if it was directed at someone else's reply to my comment, then you should have replied to them, not me. I never said, nor even implied, what you attribute to me (that white women and black women face equal obstacles/have equal privilege). In fact, if you understood my comment, I was saying exactly the opposite. Reese being white means she is less likely to go to jail for causing problems/making a scene, whereas Leslie would be more likely to go to jail for that same behavior. That was my comment, and I'm not sure how you could misconstrue that to mean that they have equal privilege/face similar obstacles.

    Leslie Jones has such an incredibly unique and brilliant comic talent. She can ride that thin line between funny and crazy like no one else. I always felt that SNL never really understood this gift, and hence never really knew how to use her or write for her when she was part of the cast. This sketch, and several others that come to mind, show what she is capable of and what an extraordinary comic she really is. I wish SNL had done better by her.

    When you are able to move around the world empowered and knowing it was designed to cater to you and nobody is out to "get you", just because you are you, you tend to be less defensive and ready to fight about every little thing. You give the benefit of the doubt to a lot more people and remove the chip off your shoulder. Which in fact, helps navigate circumstances much easier. It is basically poking fun at a tragic reality that many African Americans are in a constant state of PTSD and anxiety over whether they are being treated fairly or not. Dark humor indeed.

      @@deer105 You are right, there are loads of other kinds of anxiety or PTSD including ones white people may have. That is not what THIS skit is about. It is about the fear black people have when they enter certain white-majority spaces, that any kind poor service or delay or denial of service, or asking for their ID, or questioning why they are there or pre-emtively being told how expensive things are or refusing to cash a cheque etc. is because of anti-black discrimination (which sadly is sometimes the case even though things are changing) and their hypervigilance and defensiveness about it. It is not about other kinds of adversity. It is about a very specific kind, "Fear of anti-black racism by white people". And it is perfectly okay to focus just on this particular experience. It does not negate other people's unrelated experiences with PTSD for completely different reasons than the one in the skit.

      Dan Field No racism in Canada? Bruh. First Nations people get treated differently for no good reason plenty. I had a dear friend in highschool who is Metis, she was an honour student, now has a master’s degree, and is probably the most well mannered person I have ever met. She is practically the definition of class and civility. She and I had what we liked tp call nice fights in highschool, where we would basically try to be more polite and gracious than the other when conflict would arise. Her father is first nations and is a well respected RCMP officer. He is a kind hearted man; gentle and soft spoken. And you know what? She and her mixed race family members experience racism. For a simple example, being silently followed around a store by employees, despite having never shoplifted anything. Despite the father being a police officer! In fact, are you aware that the last Residential school in Canada only closed in 1996. There are still people alive today who suffered in those schools, or whose friends and family suffered in those schools. Children were abused in those schools! Children died in those schools! Did you know that there was a time when hand cuffs were designed specifically for children, so that they could be forcibly dragged away from their families and stripped of their culture and heritage against their parents’ consent? And guess what? I STILL hear people today trying to claim that residential schools weren’t that bad. In fact, my cousin has a Métis boyfriend, and one of her family members tried to tell him straight to his face that residential schools weren’t that bad. That’s racism. It’s one thing to recognize the tragedies of the past and try to reconcile, it’s quite another to deny that anything bad really happened altogether. And first nations people still experience that to this day.

      Jasmina Taglietti Learn your history before you comment. EVERY culture and color has been a slave to other cultures and colors throughout history. My ancestors came from Ireland, and they were not only slaves in their own country (when they were invaded), but were also slaves in the New World, aka, America.
      Yes, slavery in America was wrong, awful, and is a stain in our country's history, but GET OVER YOURSELF. Black people act like they were the only slaves in the history of the world, and therefore since their ancestors suffered, the current generation (who were NEVER slaves) believe they deserve pity, a free ride, and in your own words, should have the right to be racist? Are you a complete psycho? How the f*** did they earn that again?
      Black people were first and foremost slaves to their own kind back in Africa and were sold to whites to work in America... Don't forget that. Once again, yes, slavery is abhorrent and wrong. If they want to go back to their homeland where their ancestors were slaves to other blacks, be my guest. However, if they want to try to make a life here in America (or where ever), then they can be responsible citizens who respect others. ZERO white people in the current generation owned slaves and ZERO black people are currently slaves, so how about you get off your pathetic hate-enabling pedestal and embrace love for all instead.
      On a side note, do you know that slavery does currently exist in modern times...here in America and all across the world? It is the sex-trade of mostly children and women, and that, my friend, is something to be angry about. If you want to be righteous, don't be self-righteous and don't give one race a free pass to be self-righteous either... Be selfLESSly-righteous towards others and help stop the current slave-trade... Or you could just continue to enable others to act like a victim for absolutely no reason while contributing nothing but hate towards people that have done nothing to them. It's your choice.

      The reason black Americans aren't yet satisfied is because there's still an abhorrent amount of inequality between whites and minority groups in the U.S, especially African Americans, though I must agree that Jasmina took it too far. I don't think that genuine racism is excusable under any circumstances, though satirical stuff is more of a grey area for me.
