The Best Pokemon Games That KILLED The Series

  • Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver ruined Pokemon forever. But I'm saying that for good reason. Leading up to the release, we had games like Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, Fire Red, Leaf Green, Emerald, and Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. It felt like we were on a consistent uprise in terms of the quality of the games, and Heart Gold / Soul Silver were no exception.
    My problem lies mainly with the stuff that followed...The games set the bar so high that all future titles fell short in my opinion. So this video covers my thoughts on the games, and the current state of the series as well as some personal stories about what the games mean to me. I hope you enjoy, and as always: Thanks for watching.
    Also, my opinion is definitely correct because I am heavily biased to favor these games.
    Let me know if you think this is a stupid take, or if you agree, or what your favorite game in the pokemon franchise is down in the comments.

    My favorite Pokemon memory is when I realized I could push the boulders down the holes in the ice path in gold. I’d spent weeks trying to figure out the ice path. Eventually giving up and just kinda wondering around doing random stuff. Periodically returning to try to solve the puzzle. Then eventually I pushed a boulder through by accident and it clicked, I got to blackthorn, I beat Claire, I caught some cool pokemon, got the master ball and used it on raikou, and used it to destroy the league. I played it several years after it came out, but I was a little kid in the mid 2000’s so I didn’t really know Google was a thing I could use for resources

    The first time I played Pokemon was Pokemon Blue emulated on what probably was the shadiest 100 games in a CD pack ever. But I absolutely loved how me and my sister came up with so many explanations for things like, "Oh you gotta knock out Pokemon or they'll keep following you and triggering encounters," or "Pikachu is the only electric type that can shock ground type Pokemon".
    That said Gold/Silver was the moment it clicked and led me down a rabbit hole that I'll cherish forever. Between the music, the variety of Pokemon. Roxanne being a brick wall, I loved every moment of Gold and even grinded grades to convince my parents to get a GBA for Crystal.

      A lot of people skipped black and white unfortunately. I loved the storyline and black and white 2s post game and the seasons (which weve never seen again). The designs just don't vibe with me.
      People try to dismiss it as nostalgia for old pokemon but that isn't it. I love most scarlet/violet designs. It's not just the inspirations they chose (like ice cream). I think it has something to do with the lines. The pokemon just don't look quite as much like pokemon to me. Some of them like zebstrika do, but many of them just look a little off or more like fakemon.
      The other problem is the moving sprites. I think gamefreak implemented them before they were ready to do something like that. I get motion sickness. It sucks because I can't go back to them. Even back in the day it was a struggle to play for decent periods of time. Too pixelated and too blurry.

    It’s always interesting to hear when people gush over hg/ss for me because they’re imo some of the the most overrated games in the franchise. I still enjoy them nevertheless but it’s one of those games where I’m constantly thinking about the issues I have with it whilst I’m playing. From the awful level curves, limited Pokémon availability, boring and uneventful story, bland region design. One of the biggest selling points: Kanto, was also something I took issue with as it meant johto felt lacklustre, short and empty. Some people may say Kanto makes up for it, but to me, it was just 2 boring regions slapped together instead of a full complete experience.

No matter what though, I think they’ll always be S tier to me just because of the personal connection I have with them from the time in my life when I first experienced them - what would you consider either the most underrated or best game in your eyes?

    I honestly disagree with everything you said about Gen 5. While it's true that they don't have the same amount of content as HGSS, I feel like you tried too much to focus on what BW (or any later games) aren't instead of focusing on what they are. Then, this criticism isn't really just directed at you, but every time people say that the new Pokemon aren't good or that they don't "feel like Pokemon", I always roll my eyes because it feels like some fans just want either cute Pokemon or badass Pokemon but nothing more, and imo the series would be uninteresting if it didn't have more out there and bizarre designs. As someone who grew up with Gen 3, I wouldn't say that Gen 1-4 designs are all winners either, and designs like the Machamp line or Jynx are uncomfortable and actually more "un-Pokemon" than a lot of modern designs, and maybe this is a hot take, but Gen 6 and 7 combined have more solid Pokemon than most of Gen 4. It's okay to dislike the Pokemon of later Generations, but act like the earlier ones are all much better it's kinda unfair. The modern ones are different, sure, but they aren't less Pokemon than the previous ones (this critisim isn't directed to you).
    As for HGSS or the Johto games in general I won't say too much on it with only saying, that although it is cool to see Kansai inspirations in there, I think it also suffer the same problem the 2d games, mainly Gen 1-4 have, being the regions tend to be almost identical to each other. It's definitely a hardware limitation issue but credit where's credit do, despite having problems with modern Pokémon, the regions from Unova onwards (excluding Paldea) do a better job on making the region more diverse and unique compare to HGSS Johto.
    Despite my critisims, I still think the video is interesting and well made.

    HGSS are amazing, but literally right after this, we got BW, and BW are the best games in the franchise bro. I actually had the same initial response to them as you did - the pokemon available just weren't as compelling as those available in HGSS, and so I didn't really like BW that much to begin with. However, BW2 added back in native access to some of the highlights from previous generations, and in doing so removed the problem that was preventing people from fully appreciating how good BW really were. And with the benefit of hindsight - 1-4 weren't all that great either. Taken as a whole, Gen 1 feels pretty generic, with the smallest proportion of designs I like; gen 2 feels forgettable, with it being hard to remember what originated in it; gen 4 leans heavily towards nostalgia baiting with new evolutions of existing pokemon (although has great legendaries and mythicals); only gen 3 I think has genuinely solid design through and through. What made HGSS feel like it had a good selection was the ability for the player to focus on what they liked most from a 400+ strong list of options. Meanwhile, gen 5 was taking the bold move of having an entire new full set of pokemon, without using anything from previous generations. It worked about as well as gen 1 did, and as a result did detract from the first playthrough experience a bit, but what you're getting everywhere else - the great visuals, the for-once decent storyline, the refined battle mechanics and the novel gameplay ideas - more than make up for it.
    Ultimately, the title "best pokemon game" has to go to the one that is most replayed, and for me that's BW2.

    I have enjoyed every pokemon game i have played & i have played from Leaf green and fire Red i dunno pokemon has a Charm in my opinion at least, my top 2 are X&Y and D&P so its why i had bias for the BDSP on the Switch i wont say its perfect but i enjoyed them i know bias but i had fun and thats what matters.

    I think these games are great, cuz of course they are. But to be honest, I feel like they are overhyped and I have some personal problems as to why they're not my favorite.
    1) I pretty much feel the opposite about the music as you. I think that all the extra stuff they added to the songs really ruined it for me. The Gen 2 soundfont is incredible so I'm also really biased.
    2) I think this game is really slow. I get that Diamond/Pearl are slow, but these feel slow in a different way. Like how if your lead slot is using a field move, they do an animation...it's charming at first, but if you're anything like me and are still playing these games well into adulthood, it gets old and you don't appreciate it as much and also while the UI is almost all touch, I feel like it is much slower to navigate and using items feels like it takes longer than the other gen 4 games.
    Anyway, those are just some reasons why I think these are stellar games, but not the best.

    • @mistercbody
      @mistercbody  Před 4 dny

      Completely valid opinions tbh - like I said in the video I do wish that GB sounds item was available right when you got the pokewalker (or at least relatively early in the game) because then you could choose the vibe of your entire playthrough rather than having to essentially complete everything before you get to hear the original soundtrack lol. And I feel you on the field move thing. I think it looks really nice, but if you’re over it and just trying to get through an area then it could be annoying for sure

    I got HG when it came out my senior year didn't play it much went back to in when I was in college and was blown away ORAS came out shortly after. I think HGSS was amazing but gen 6 quality of life features for local and online multi-player battles and breeding were peak. I never had as much fun battling my friends as I did in gen 6. I just wish they stuck with spirtes and pixel art. 3d is alright but if gen 4 had gen 6's quality of life it would be perfect. HGSS set the bar for pokemon games it didnt kill the franchise it's just everything else hasn't reached that bar. It's crazy hearing you were 11 and might have been embarrassed of people finding out you liked Pokémon. I graduated in 2010 and I remember having a grad party and half the dudes had a pokewalker there and we were all just huddled around talking about our pokemon while everyone was getting hammered 😂

      @mistercbody  Před 5 dny

      Completely agreed about wishing the pixel art style stayed. I think the 3D stuff is pretty cool but overall prefer the 2D art. And lol that’s great, I think I was so concerned when I was younger because I didn’t have many friends with similar interests as me so at that age I just assumed that meant everyone had outgrown the games / hobby even though I hadn’t. Then a couple years later I realized I just needed to find some people who share interests with me, and luckily I did!

    Dude this video's going to blow up. But I feel the same exact way. Pokémon really peaked in the 4th generation, and it has nothing to do with nostalgia.
    I'm not the biggest fan of gen 5 myself, probably my least favorite gen. And it's not just from the bad Pokémon designs. 4th gen just offers so many more options to enjoy the franchise.
    Not only did gen 4 offer 5 main series titles, and introduce the physical special split. You could interact with so many spin-off games. Like PBR, Pokémon Ranger for the Manaphy Egg, and Pokémon Ranch etc. And you could transfer Pokémon from gen 3 with just one system.
    It's crazy how the Pokémon World Championships from 2008-2010 looks better than the Championships from 2011-2013. Because the earlier ones were being rendered on the Wii using Pokémon Battle Revolution.
    I could go on about this subject forever, but dude you're not wrong. Gen 4 is almost inarguably the best generation of Pokémon, and it not close. Loved this video 🔥

    I disagree, Pokémon Black2 and White2 are the best Pokémon game but not Black and White they are not as good as people say they are, Pokémon Black2 and White2 are better in every way from Black and White minus the story.
    Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver suffer the same problems as Pokémon Gold and Silver: The Story, Map design, Pokémon quality and quantity in the main game for player and NPC's to use these all problems should have been fixed in Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver and I am very disappointed in that part.

    From what I understand, these games were major projects with the goal of getting the vast majority of people to get into them so they could experience what gen 2 had to offer whether they played the old games or not. All the effort was intentional. Sounds crazy to say it like this, but there was never supposed to be a pokemon game as good as this one. The whole peaking thing was intentional. They promised so much in HGSS and they delivered on nearly everything they promised. Newer games get one or 2 big things right and then the rest is meh. Case in point: X & Y is flashy cool crap with mega evolutions and stuff, but I HATED the lack of difficulty these games had. That alone made me a hater of X&Y. B&W, fine story and graphics but the amount of unnecessary mediocre new pokemon designs...like why? *TLDR: HGSS did a lot of big things right. No cutting corners. Because it was their last big passion project.* Though you could argue black and white were the last big passion project I suppose.

    • @mistercbody
      @mistercbody  Před 4 dny +1

      Wow, yeah great point. I knew they were meant to be the ultimate Pokemon experience back in the day, but didn’t really think about how that implication could rub off onto the other titles besides them just not living up to HGSS in one way or another. I don’t know if it was necessarily intended for the following games to fall short (many people would argue with me and say that newer titles didn’t fall short)

    • @wonthangsoop
      @wonthangsoop Před 4 dny

      @@mistercbody Yeah poor choice of words when I said "peaking was intentional." More like "it was naturally bound to happen." And yes if a game does a few things right people will latch on to that and say that new game is good too. Like "OMG ORAS has megas and all this cool stuff! Can't top that!" type of arguments.
