Paul Simon heard this cover and said "I liked it very much … it was accomplished very well". He even made sure he contacted David Draiman of Disturbed to tell him how much he enjoyed his take on the song. High praise from a music legend.

The lyrics are TIMELESS. When Paul Simon wrote those words he meant them as a warning for a future that scared him. David and Disturbed is telling you that you didn't heed that warning and here we are.....
David Draiman can sing anything. His range is unbelievable. He was trained as a Cantor growing up, as most of his family. But then he pivoted, and when he wanted to do metal, he hired a vocal coach to teach him how to do the growl in his voice. This was a Simon and Garfunkel original. But after Disturbed put out their cover, Paul Simon reached out and congratulated them on their version and said the song is now yours, as your brought forward to today's world.

you are the first person that actually understands this song...I have watched at least 30 reactions videos to see if anyone understood it....they listen but do not hear as the song says. At the very beginning he tells you that this was planted In his head ...anyway I am so glad to see someone else gets it

If Paul Simon wrote that song to us all as a warning, as most people think it is, THIS was the rendition he had in mind if that warning was ignored.

Kathy here - just found your channel. What a song to see you react to. David Draiman, lead singer, was trained as a Cantor, as most of his family. But when he decided to switch gears to "metal" music, he actually hired a vocal coach to help him get the grit and growl in his voice. The original was a simple way of saying "hey guys, wake up, watch what's going on", but the Disturbed version is telling today's world, "hey, you didn't listen before, so wake the hell up before it's too late". I love this version best. Thanks for your reaction.

This version without a doubt is my favorite. David Draiman's vocals are amazing... such power and control... and he can sing with a pure head-voice when he wants, then to vocal fry and back on a dime! He can even put vibrato on the vocal fry, which is incredibly difficult to do. Liked your reaction Nick.

This is not just my favorite cover of this song, but one of my favorite covers of any song. I think the lyrics are probably more true today than when they were written. David starts singing very low, and it sounds haunting and full of regret. As the song progresses, his voice gets high and sounds more pleading. Towards the end, his voice gets raspier and sounds more desperate. I really think this progression matches how the author would feel about the situation over time. Of course, you have to give the original credit, and the best covers honor the original while putting their own touch to it. To me, this is an absolute masterpiece.

I heard the original my whole life... but this version I feel deeply... Pentatonix great voices but it's almost audio overload... the emotions are detached in their version... this one I cry and get Chills... the original lyrics fit perfectly with the emotions

I don't care much for their other music, but this always mesmerizes me. The video is something else. To me the video is representing censorship, where music has been buried, taken away from the people. Then we have the lone man standing amidst the rubble. You see one guy find a guitar and another a drum and they trudge through the barren land. Elsewhere you have people writing music that will never be heard because they have been silenced and people with hidden instruments. And as the two men show up with their instruments, the others emerge and join to reach them and no longer tolerate being silenced.
As for the song itself, I always felt the lines "Hello, darkness my old friend, I've come to walk with you again," was about depression. The line people talking without speaking feels like when people babble on and on, but have nothing of substance to say. People hearing without listening is when you are talking to someone and they are nodding and acting like they are paying attention, but they are really preparing what they are going to say next and you can tell when they open their mouths that they weren't listening at all to what you said because sometimes they ask you a question that was already answered in what you just said. My mom does this all the time. And his dream was of ten thousand people, maybe more doing this all at once.
People writing songs that voices never share, no one dared, disturb the sound of silence--That is about wanting to speak up against what is going on, wanting to protest but being afraid to do so, being afraid to go against the status quo and be the squeaky wheel, not wanting to be the first one to make noise. A least that is how I few it. Today I would view it as not wanting to become a victim of cancel culture or of an out of control government of any country. At least that is my interpretation.
And he is trying to warn them that this kind of silence grows like a cancer and if they don't protest it will just keep going on as it has been, but no one is willing to speak up about what is going on, which at the time I believe was a war we shouldn't have been in. But no one appeared to be listening. They just kept on following a false dichotomy, their neon god. But the sign, the light from the beginning flashed out a warning to listen to the words that were forming.
And the words that were forming were written on the subway walls and the tenement halls. These were words of protest, done in secret, spray painted there. Anti-war words, anti-government words, words against sending our children to fight when "they" safely hid their kids away. Words that proclaimed what the future would be. These words whispered in the sounds of silence until eventually they became prophetic, and no longer whispered, but shouted in a roar that could eventually no longer be ignored. Hello, darkness, my old friend, indeed.

I grew up with Simon & Garfunkel's version but I like this one too. Disturbed changed the meaning, which is fine. I feel like S&G are warning us to "be careful of what could happen". Disturbed is saying "look what you've done". BTW, even though this is an amazing video, watching David sing this on Conan O'Brien will give you chills.

So much wisdom in this song, I love the lyrics
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls and whispered in the sound of silence", we listen to media and big flashy videos but the true prophets that could teach us wisdom are usually found tucked away from the spotlight, their wise words may just be in a notebook in a drawer somewhere and since no1 listens to wisdom anymore, the only way for them to reach out is to write their words of wisdom on a wall somewhere, then walk away
"Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again", again, the darkness is the only thing that can be talked to since no1 listens
"when my eyes were stabbed by the light of a neon ligth", when u try to actually think and all the media, videos and lights distracts u instead
When we are so filled with the media imaginery people feel content and just follows the stream, every1 wants to be happy but also believes that drowning ur mind with all that flashy stuff is the answer

The best description of the difference between this and the original I’ve heard is that the original was a warning and this cover was the doom that resulted from us not listening to that warning.

  • @DaveSteffen-zh2xi
    @DaveSteffen-zh2xi Před 3 měsíci

The imagery in the video really highlights the lyrics…the scenes of the piano burning gets me every time through the finishing with the musicians traveling to the people…I think the original was a soft warning of where were going (glued to our tv, neon, etc.) - Disturbed is yelling about the reality we’re in - stuck on our devices instead of talking and being with each other. Proof? When was the last time you went to a restaurant and didn’t see people at their table scrolling on their phones?

Simon and Garfunkel’s version will always be a hit, without it Disturbed wouldn’t have made this amazing copy. S and G did almost all their songs soft that was their style. The way Disturbed did this was perfect for today with all that’s happening and how he sang it, as his voice got louder and stronger right to the end was getting everyone’s attention to listen to the message Paul Simon put in that song 60 years ago this coming March of 2024.

Interesting hearing the varied thoughts of the three of you! I find it very hard to compare the two versions - this is like Nightwish's Tarja/Marko _Phantom_ _of_ _the_ _Opera:_ a totally different take. At the moment I prefer the Disturbed cover, but then it's fresher (I've been listening to the original for at least half a century). Both are a pleasure.

Be sure to watch their live performance on Conan. NOTE: David Draiman was really sick for the Conan live performance, and I heard he was not pleased with his performance. Being the perfectionist that he is, I can understand why he felt that way. However, the production as a whole performance was amazing, and his was EXCEPTIONAL! I loved it. Sorry if I'm echoing this from anyone else who has commented but... please, if you haven't considered it; I highly recommend reacting to the artist Ren. Ren has such a phenomenal catalog of music. Trying to pigeonhole him into a genre would be a mistake... once you think one thing, you listen to another track and you think another. Start with 'Hi Ren' and from there... let the comments be your guide. Though, I'd wager they'll suggest 'The Tales of Jenny and Screech FULL' because, well... we all would.
ANYHOOOO... I love this channel. Loved this reaction. (react to Ren) huh, I suggested that again? No, I didn't (Ren!) Nope, not me. Nopity nope nope.

Thanks to S & G for writing and recording this classic over 50 years ago, allowing Disturbed, Pentatonix and others to re-interpret the meaning.......a warning against an increasingly detached, unfeeling, cold society.......maybe more relevant today than in the 1960's......props to the cinematographer for the stunning visuals.......
