Thanks to Nick McPhate for writing this piece.
What If's are fascinating footy topics, especially those that involve long-winded ripple effects. When Nick sent me the concept and script for this video I couldn't say no. Dustin Martin creates some impressive butterfly effects.
Thanks for watching!

Really enjoy these, not enough AFL content like this out there

i reckon there’s literally 0 other content out there on footy. so glad i find jagger
Look at Aussie Thingz he makes awesome content!
Hey Tim! Andy Munro here ahah
@@adelaidecrowsrdabest Andrew whats goin arrrrn
Honestly if the AFL was a global sport your channel would be so huge, all us Australians appreciate you
Do you reckon it should go global ?
@@tsukiyunoda they should at least add a NZ team like the NRL
@J G yeah I love the part where they score a goal every game
@J G Wikipedia steals your IP address be careful dude
@J G Soccer: beloved by lady boys the world over...
Wow. Almost scary to think how much of an impact one kick has had on a whole decade, elite work mate
2 actually, counting Tamblings
Hi
If you wanna believe what you see on youtube
Someone needs to track down McMahon and show him this
This is one of the things I love about footy. It’s a distillation of the butterfly effect. You normally can’t pin it all down to single moments like this but every single thing that happens at a club becomes part of its story, and whenever that club achieves success, all of that stuff was part of that story.
As a tiger's fan, this is the scariest alternate reality.
@Sasha Taylor Rocky ride indeed
it'd be a scary alternate reality for the whole league really if Jordy McMahon missed
I remember watching this moment in the stands, and for whatever reason at the time it felt breathtaking, like something miraculous had occurred. If only I had known at the time just how good it was.
As a giants fan im pissed
@@zachmair7299 Oh I can imagine your pain.
Thank you for coming back mate. We love the content
Too true👌
Wsg shezza
Can’t believe I was at that game as a Melbourne fan. I remember it so vividly, the crowd going nuts as the ball went through was honestly heart crushing as a 8 year old
Easily the best footy channel out there. Quality over quantity. Appreciate your unique style of storytelling. Your content is timeless and will become classic over time and a legacy you can leave behind.
i would love to see a video on Geelong and their unparralled stay at the top end of the ladder, your content is amazing and there is nothing else like this
as a Giants fan this hurts a lot, thanks!
on behalf of him no worries hopefully you can get one later this decade
@@darcy399 should’ve had one in 2016, 2019 maybe if we didn’t shit the bed
@@the_vortexian yeah you should have easily won that preliminary in 2016 and beat the swans in the gf, 2019, maybe not, Richmond were dominating the finals
@@the_vortexian sneaky chance this year
We've finished 7th now mate, we got this haha.
Thank you sir for providing content like this for the AFL. As a 2014 CZcams-raised nba fan where I would spend 25 hours a day watching and learning more about the sport of basketball at the highest level. I can commend content like this for the best sport in the world.
You’ll be reaching people across the globe, heck I’m the only person who know who Giannis is at my Aussie school. And this content can translate that for AFL fans too. Keep grinding my brother, good things are most sure to come.
Great video and an amazing 'what if' scenario to ponder. As a long suffering Tigers fan, this truly was a monumental moment that helped transform the trajectory of the club. Funnily enough, I still remember being upset with some Melbourne supporting mates who gloated that tanking and getting picks 1 and 2 was better than a meaningless win. I remember being sad that a number 1 pick in Scully who was a Tigers fan growing up, and who could have been a messiah type figure to rescue the club from mediocrity would be playing for another team. Funny how things work out. Dusty became that figure. Though on a side note, it's a shame to see highly promising careers never materialise due to injuries and other factors. Would have loved to have seen both Scully and Trengrove fulfill their potential - and Vickery and Tambling for that matter too. Both were, are and have been maligned but their contributions here were vital and at the end of the day, they are people just trying to live their lives who don't deserve abuse and ridicule. Had the pleasure of meeting Tambling once during a preseaon visit to my home town growing up and he was polite, friendly and nothing but a good bloke.
0:26 as a Collingwood supporter that sent some bad memories to me, good thing we came back and one in 2023, GO PIES
I can see the amount of hard work put into this. Just cracked a beer and really enjoyed this. Made my night after Richmonds terrible season. Thank you.
You are bloody good at working this butterfly effect mate!
- as a Crows fan, I say that Richard Tambling kick may have cost us a premiership as well :D
love this! even as a tigers fan. a unique perspective that no one really has tried for AFL. keep up the great work!
I like these scenarios as they play in facets of life & history.
A guy on FB put forward a theory about a Hawthorn/Melbourne match late in the 1964 season. Melbourne win a tight match in the last minute at Glenferrie, win the minor premiership by half a game from three other teams with Hawthorn 1 game out of the 4.
Had Hawthorn won, Melbourne don’t win the premiership, Norm Smith is asked to step aside & Barassi becomes captain/coach. Under Barassi, Melbourne win more premierships & avoid being a joke for 57 years.
You should do a video on Issac smith’s miss after the siren against Geelong in 2016 and how it potentially cost Hawthorn a 4th premiership in a row. Love the videos man
I was at that Melb v Rich game and I saw Melb leading and switching the players from defence to attack to throw the game.
The other great tanking game of all time was Rich v StKilda, last game of 2007, Tigers coach Terry Wallace took off Richardson, Brown and Bowden so the Saints could get up to win.
This enabled the Tigers to get Trent Cotchin in the draft at number 2.
Don't forget the Kreuzer cup between Carlton and Melbourne in 2007, both sides trying too loose.
@@ChannelBlaino Kruezer went one, Cotchin two. Richmond finished last & should've had #1 but the league decided to give Carlton #1 as a comp pick.
@@ChannelBlaino loose = not firmly or tightly fixed in place
lose = the opposite of win
Good job. The Sam Mitchell tackle is another one. Saved Clarkos job in 2010 and eventually lead to the three-peat.
Your analysis is always a joy to watch. Thank you for making these.
I look forward to these videos they are by far some of my favourite footy content, keep it up man I love it!
Holy shit, dude. Such a well put together video. On my 3rd watch now, can't believe it...makes me wonder how many other game-changing scenarios on a similar level were so close to happening...this is definitely up there with some of the biggest though, for sure
Very well done, appreciate this
This is brilliant, love your work! Firstly the concept, and then the research that's gone into this... Can't wait for more
Found you on my recommended. This is some of the best AFL content out there
Love your editing and your content in general!
this came out on birthday, good YT vids always seems to come out on my birthday!
This is a truly wonderful and amazing story. Thank you for your beautiful presentation, editing, and commentary.
Great video as always mate. Always after more AFL content on CZcams. Like the way that you didn't bag Melbourne for picking Scully and Trengrove, instead putting us in the position of the recruiters at the time, where there was a clear top 2, even though Dusty has clearly turned out better. Have got a couple of videos over on my channel if you love AFL that you may enjoy, with more videos in the pipeline soon.
Crazy that they were comparing kane cornea to scully, scully is alot more explosive Kane only had one speed
Glad to see your content finally getting some recognition great stuff
I have 100% been talking about this to fellow Richmond fans for YEARS now (add in the fact we gave up pick 21 to get McMahon (Callan Ward - captain of GWS), BUT I could never have put this as eloquently, sequentially and convincingly as you did...WELL DONE!
Another great video. The quality of your content is insanely good, especially with your channel size
This is an exceptional video mate, I’m not a huge afl fan and I was unaware of your channel before seeing this video in my feed but I really enjoyed watching, keep it up
What a great video! I was riveted from start to finish. More please!
I was behind the goals in that game and was walking out thinking we (Richmond) had lost, when I heard a roar. I realised McMahon was having a shot after the siren and said to my kids "Wait - this doesn't happen often! Let's watch - he'll probably miss..." Of course he didn't, and the rest is history. Fascinating to think what the AFL landscape wouldn't been like if Dusty had not gone to Richmond. Great video!
Awesome content. Love love love this sort of work for AFL
Fucking brilliant video, mate. I love a good 'What if?' scenario, and this was fantastic to watch.
Incredible to think how one passage of play in a dead rubber between two then-mediocre sides could dictate the next decade of AFL football.
And who would have thought that Ben Cousins, of all people, would have such an important role in setting it all up. The ageing genius in a sea of bog-standard footballers, a superstar of the late 90s/early 00s, at the end of his career helping to create the dynasty of the 2010s.
No one:
Jagger Skillbeck: Dustin Martin doesn’t go to Richmond and this causes WW3
That final play narration gave me goosebumps
This video is superb!
Your videos are literally what I need in life. AFL need to hire you
he’s back!! i love your content mate and i’m sure the rest of us do as well keep it up mate!
wow, this is simply incredible, i dont ever comment on videos on youtube but this just deserves alot of credit
I was at that game , Melbourne supporters were celebrating Richmond had won poking fun at Richmond supporters after the siren singing the Richmond song. Pretty funny how it turned out .
It was similar to Richmond picking Tambling ahead of Franklin.
*this bouta be a movie haha.*
Love your content mate!!
Again. Absolutely brilliant video mate
This was incredible - well done mate!
I love these afl doco things. Thet are so interesting. Really great job.
The idea that Tom Lynch is a pillar of anything except worst misses videos is hilarious.
Fascinating. Plenty of what ifs but it's interesting to analyse and think about.
This is a scary good analysis. AFL needs more deep dive analysis like this, there are so many stories to be told and picked apart in the game and it's so rare to find someone willing to do it.
Or you could just watch the footy.
This. Is. Brilliant. Great sliding doors story. Well done man 👍👌
Your videos are always so entertaining, please do not stop making these videos lol
This is gold! Masterpiece.
Mate I just found this vid in my feed. Forget your other stuff, this content is awesome. Reminds me of the channel Secret Base but for us Aussies. Keep it up.
U had me glued... this is like a crime thriller.
honestly one of the best videos i’ve watched
No words to describe this content. Bloody awesome mate
Jagger Skilbeck and Jimmy Highroller are the best you tubers out there
Love your work mate keep it up 👍
He’s backkkk! Love your content bro, the AFL needs to hire you!
Great vid mate, more AFL ones like this please!
sic content, love this, good work mate.
this is hands down the best afl vid i have ever watched
This needs to be seen by a LOT more people
When Dusty was talking to GWS I felt like my wife was leaving me for someone else.
A legend has returned
Hindsight’s a beautiful thing. Great vid 😊
Very impressive research and a great “what if” worthy of some serious discussion. Earned a like and a rare Subscribe from me. Well done 👍
You are unreal mate, I absolutely love these videos!!!
jagger your such a fkn legend welcome back mate
Richmond drafted Martin and made the finals in 2013 (their first finals since 2001) and eventually won 3 premierships and Melbourne continued to struggle but these struggles led to good picks esp Petracca, Oliver, and the 2009 draft steal Max Gawn. In 2017 Melbourne missed the finals by a kick but in 2018 Melbourne were on the rise and made the finals but went down hard with injuries and poor play, but then came 2021 when they were able to field a healthy team, regrouped and the rest was history.
Great video dude. Cold shivers and I go for west coast
I was there the day of ~ the kick ~ and it was by far the most bizarre day at the footy I've ever been to. Melbourne fans were singing the song louder than we were
Coach Rawlings to players: "You almost lost to a team that wasn't trying." The next month showed how dire Richmond's stocks were.
And thus led to Melbourne 2021 season. What a turn up!
not to mention the Crows might of been 2017 Premiers 😭😭😭
I want the alternative reality.
Love this kinda stuff mate! top notch
Best account on CZcams. Love the content man
Canadian here just getting into it. Love this stuff because it helps me become more acquainted. Gotta find a team and join one of the the global packages that let me see every game and that!
Hope you’ve been watching, it’s gonna be a ripper of a grand final next week
@@umey3445 I'm gonna have to pay for a membership next year so I don't miss out. It was tough to see some stuff
Amazing video. Just subscribed to the channel. Looking forward to watching more
Excellent video - thank you 🙏
This guys brain is on another level
the best video i have ever watched, love the content mate.
Love it mate hopefully we can still push for a 4th b4 Dusty retires. What a crazy decade it’s been. Thinking of the challenge by the group who wanted Dimma Peggy etc out. If that happens and a clear out of players occurs we could be looking at no flags and a couple more wooden spoons for good measure. Yet no one would have known what doing that had actually cost the club bloody scary.
You’re back! Talk about a miracle
Loving the vids at the moment, keep it up mate!
love this mate, please do more like this!
This is an impressively well thought out what if
Mate I’m addicted to your doco’s very sharp stuff...poor old Jordy McMahon give us a 6 minute special on him
I was at this game when I was like 6 years old. Great video
Great to see you back mate! good stuff :)
Cheers boys, good to be back
