    Having lost a panel on the highway to a strong cross wind I know how scary that can be. The failure wasn't the attachment to the roof but where the panel attached to the Z bracket. A nut vibrated off and have the wind a lift point. When I mounted the replacement I used 1/4" bolts with toggles that are meant to be used in drywall. This have me a large surface area on the inside. All nuts used are self locking with Locktight red added

    search "VHB tape solar panel installation". No holes in the roof. use 3M VHB tape to mount the mounting brackets to the roof and then bolt the panels to the mounting brackets. VHB tape is stronger than screws and you can tape brackets with a longer base. So the stressed
    area covers a bigger footprint. It will NOT come loose.

  • @tinysolarshack9615
    @tinysolarshack9615 Před 6 lety +1

    Excellent information. Having had a panel on my car for a few years I’ve found vibration can be a real and silent enemy. Larger panels will flex/vibrate and create a standing wave at a resonate frequency depending on speed (no bumps required!).
    To keep this to a minimum I suggest using a piece of POOL NOODLE the foam sticks kids play with in a pool or at the beach. Place it between the roof and panel to dampen the vibration. I don’t have proof but strong suspicion that this keeps the cells from structural destruction cause by oscillation/vibration. I know that pool noodles and even foam pipe insulation are available in many diameters and such. I think even a piece 18” properly placed with the wind flow could really work well.

    Rather than washers, why not use a metal plate with holes matching the ones in the roof? That would give even more surface area. Also, what about using rivnuts as fasteners?

    • @navigationnowhere
      @navigationnowhere  Před 6 lety

      That would also do the trick. It would really depend on where you put your mounts and how secure that location is. It all comes down to movement and vibrations. Those two = bad things eventually. Haha

    Awesome logo super-imposed on the drone shot! At the risk of asking a stupid question... here I go: Why not reverse the solar panel bolts so that the nuts are accessible on top of the roof? Would that not allow for tightening if need be due to vibration? With the nuts on the under-side, they will presumably be inaccessible due to foam insulation and wood finish inside. Just wondering. Also, Skoolie's propane tanks on the roof seem like a great idea. Where did you put Navi's propane tanks, and why?

    • @navigationnowhere
      @navigationnowhere  Před 6 lety

      Thanks! You could reverse the nuts. However, I typically use locking nuts so they would not come loose. But, that could totally work. As for propane tanks, Navi’s tanks are under the bus in the rear. It is a 29 gallon asme rated tank. Many people put them on the roof and that works as well.

    I have been loving your videos and creativity. But i have yet to see anything on harvesting rainwater on your RV to filter and refill water tanks. While solar panels reduce the amount of time you have to be plugged in somewhere, the need for water(filtered) is more necessary. How would you invlude this with your designs?

    You can also get tin snips and some thin galvanized sheet - what ever thickness you want. If brazing isn’ an option use J-B Weld epoxy. It has a tensile strength of 3960 PSI. Build large patches to support your large washers.

    I would love to get a 3/4 length bus, but need to do the build in stages. I’m going to take your advice and gut it first so I can check for leaks, add supports, insulate, etc. I’ll have to grow into the solar panels and roof deck so I was thinking of mounting a super strong rail system or rack or something attached to the ribs themselves so I can add whatever size panels, whatever size deck etc. Is this a good idea? Is it good to attach it to the structural beams of the bus? Like a roof rack? Total newbie but my family needs a place to live on the road ASAP. Having a hard time finding a good bus.

    Why do people call angle steel, angle iron?

  • @WereReallyRelayCamping

    I hate to see people just gluing them on, no matter how strong the glue is, could be stronger than the steel, but you sticking it to nothing stronger than PAINT ! paint flakes on its own without all the stress of a panel being attached, if you really want to use tapes and glues like a pre-shooler, at least go to your dealer, and ask how much ''pull'' and weight you can attach to the paint before it will break away, go ask... see what they say.....

      I appreciate your suggestions. It might be fun to do a video in the future on different solar panel price points on the market and what you will get for your buck. I understand for many the cost of solar can be hard. However, I am not going to suggest a “cheap option”. If I am going to suggest something on this channel it will be something I can stand behind. They are great panels.
