This is so ridiculously well-acted. Comedies don't get enough credit for that; dramatic acting is always given the praise but this cast and this scene in particular is a masterclass in comedic acting. Just brilliant.
Also, most comedians can be great dramatic actors. It's been said that a good comedian can be a great dramatist, but a good dramatist won't necessarily be good at comedy.

My wife is a gaffer and I've been there done that... it's tough not to laugh sometimes. Watching these guys work over the years there are few mistakes made and production runs smoothly.
Mark McElroy It's still one of those things that only holds up if you don't put it under any pressure. He did call it a false equivalency, and he's right. You are overwhelmingly more likely to have a mostly accurate picture of the world by accepting the consensus view of the world's experts in their respective fields, views constructed by analyzing the world through the scientific method, than you are by believing just one of the countless creation myths produced more than a thousand years ago. Science isn't about being right, it's about progressively becoming less wrong, and not getting too attached to one view of the world to let it go when it's proven to be wrong. Even scientists need to trust the word of scientists in other fields, because human endevour has become so vast and specialized that it's impossible for anybody to become an expert in everything in less than a lifetime.
Yeah but you can't just believe everything someone says because "science" backs it. Especially psychology and well everything revolving around health. Health studies constantly change, one minute trans fat is okay if not good for you, the next it's bad for you; the same with saturated fat. I read a few psychology studies and their conclusions were almost the exact opposite of what the studies actually found, it's pretty ridiculous. And since no one will read the damn study, news agencies can have headlines like "Men are okay with rape." But in the study itself it says 99% of men aren't okay with rape, but since the study found 100% of women aren't okay with rape, obviously that means men are okay with rape in their mind. There's just a lot political motivations to push bullshit in psychology. So you have to be somewhat skeptical of almost everything that you haven't read about yourself. Or you're just acting like a peasant who believes everything the priest says that god wants, because he's supposedly the voice of god. Also the scientific method is a little broken right now, in a lot universities your study won't be publish unless your conclusion matches your hypothesis, so it's basically forcing people to lie or they wasted their time and possibly their money.
LordClansman there's clickbait in scientific journals too. Also skewed research with highly coincidental outcomes usually in studies funded by special interests
True scientific journals also show bias in who they select to publish, although this bias is probably less so than in other areas. Peer review is far from perfect. Bias still exists, and will continue to exist as long as there is a human element. Bias and junk science is particularly prevalent in courts of law. There is no shortage of medical experts who will advance junk science for a pretty penny. For example, the NFL and NHL, as well as bike helmet manufacturers, have all been sued multiple times, sometimes in class actions suits by people advancing junk science that asserts that football and hockey cause progressive brain diseases (CTE) when in fact the disease is fictional, and the rate of progressive brain diseases in athletes is even less so than the general public.
smartest few minutes in the whole series. perfect writing. how this show's depth is not appreciated worldwide is startling. the new seasons aren't even advertised.
This latest season had the highest viewership of any season so far. Still a drop in the bucket compared to the mass-ingested crap on regular tv, but a positive sign!
The most painful part of watching this is that there are so many people who really wouldn't know how to respond to this IRL and it does cause science to look stupid. Insanely smart writing and I hate it.
I mean the truth is science has reached a point where you have to conduct ridiculously meticulously planned experiments to come up with an answer to a small question. That's what science students are trained to do for 10 years to get a PhD. The average person couldn't replicate any of the experiments which are published in journals today. The average person is therefore left with no choice but to 'trust' the findings of the scientific community and take their word for it.
Chandan Bhowal Outside of rudimentary science, I couldn’t speak on really anything found in a scientific journal with any confidence because I would have zero idea how to back the information up. I am pro science but it’s extremely hard for those who don’t study that field. Plus both political isles in the USA LOVE to bastardize science in the name of partisanship and in the past 20 years a lot of science has become warped and presented in biased ways to fit a narrative presented by whatever party is presenting. Independent reviewed studies are more important that ever in today’s society.
Marian Elesha Exactly. Well said. You can never argue with a fool because they will always try to change the subject when they feel they are losing ground.
I know most people won’t read this but I feel compelled to explain why this scene is the most brilliant piece of comedy I’ve ever seen. 1 - Nothing is wasted. Every detail, from scene design to timing, has a purpose and draws the viewer into the world and it’s characters (the death bells... monkeys and buff dudes on posters... like what are those graphs next to Aristotle? 😂😂😂) 2 - The way Mac and Dennis are written here well defines their characters which highlights their conflict of opinion. Honestly can’t think of another scene in the show that draws them out so sharply (Mac is so... Mac, same for Dennis). The climax and resolution effectively uses the entire cast to satirize the views of protagonist/antagonist without overextending into hyperbole and maintaining relatability 3 - Serves as a witty commentary on entrenched positions on politics, science, and religion in modern American culture with historical references adeptly woven in. All while alluding to a deeper age old conflict, always lurking, but never ending. And where does this ancient battle pop up this time? Paddy’s freaking Pub! 5 - In a rare role reversal, Dennis, despite having the crowd with him and Mac’s obvious flaws, is outshone and forced to take a back seat to Mac, flipping their usual dynamic upside down. 4 - Mac and Dennis’s exchange employs logic and rhetoric that is so crisp and digestible but stays complex. Did Mac use shaky emotional appeals in establishing his argument? Of course he did because he’s Mac, and he doubles down because he’s an American 😂! And even though Dennis starts making counter claims that should win out logically, Mac is able take that strength of Dennis’s “leap of faith” argument, pull out the rug from under him, and turn it against him due to his hubris. That dramatic turn is what makes the whole scene so memorable to me. I seriously think it could be used as a jumping off point for a case study in writing, history, logic, rhetoric, psychology, culture, and comedy. I love this scene, and you should too. And don’t go trying to change my mind, because I’m dug in and I’ll never change
Nye and Tyson were always nothing more than cringy, uneducated TV scientists. It’s still funny how people took this long to realize it. Would be quite fun to watch Mac debunk them.
Allison Rose Everything should be taken with skepticism. Anyways you're speaking broadly because you have no actual point. The earth is not flat, btw. (although i would love to see an episode of IASIP where they argue that subject).
Allison Rose also, learn how to properly use the term "ironic". "because there is none."... i guess you've never heard of carbon dating. :/ Stay in school, kiddo.
and then we found out that pluto isn't actually a planet and it made us all look like a "bitch", then a few years later we found out that it turns out that pluto is actually a planet. and we looked like a "bitch" again.
***** I guess I prefer jokes that use logic. I'm not sure how you can tell if I have an attitude or not though. Or is this a tactic to make the opposition in an argument look like the "emotional" one? hmm..
Carothy Well you can’t put all theology classes together haha. I mean, Catholicism, the largest religion in the world, clearly states that evolution is real (I’m Catholic). Some theology classes do teach that everything the Bible says is fact, but those are fundamentalists, those who take every Bible word as fact. These are also the type of people to believe being gay is a sin though so... 😂
I had a similar conversation at a bar in Nashville in 2014. My response to "have you seen these fossils and examined the records yourself?" was "I can see the fossils in the museum, and if I choose to study that side then I can verify the records myself just as thousands around the world do every year as part of their post-graduation studies. Till then, I can choose to go with the global checks and balances in place that help ensure all ideas and claims can be examined internationally". The international nature of science was something my conversation partners acknowledged that they hadn't considered.
I mean, it was pretty interesting that it was based on several true stories, but why did the professor have to die, especially before he apologized to his wife?
The problem is He proved that a normal person can't proof evolution right but neither did he prove evolution wrong nor did he proof that god created man. He exposed the hypocrisy but he never proved evolution wrong.
@@pravinrao3669 He didn't even expose hypocrisy. Trusting the field of biologists with decades of experience studying biology and doing experiments to speak about biology is in no way the same as trusting a group of people with little to no training in biology who oppose a theory that has been solidified by the scientific community for several decades if not centuries. You shouldn't trust your priest about whether your house is safe if the civil engineer inspectors were telling you it was not safe and the priest was telling you it was safe. So we shouldn't do it for any other subject for which there are legitimate experts with data and proof. It was good comedy, though.
@@lambdachi493 Keep thinking people with decades of experience in biology are equivalent to people with no experience, it doesn't seem to be working for you!
I love this show. there are so many shows that have biased political views and just preach them in such an obnoxious manor. but not this show, its always just hilarious.
+Alex F. Yep. Most shows do like what they did in the Emmys. The guy said, Donald Trump is racist. Then to make things even he went after the Democrats as well. And he said Bernie Sanders looks like he's always late for a plane. Calling a guy a racist is so much worse than making fun of a guys appearance. But then they get to say " see we made fun of both parties".
+joe momma Well Donald Trump is the one with records of racism from previous employees and is the one generalizing Mexicans as rapists. If Bernie Sanders did shit like that, they would make fun of it. They resort to his appearance because he isn't acting like a goddamn moron on stage. It's not their fault one candidate is so much more of a baffoon.
The argument from authority is only a fallacy if it's a false authority. Citing scientific consensus is an actual authority, hence the argument is valid.
@@VashTheStampFiend No, scientific consensus isn't always changing. The theory of natural selection has now been consensus for nearly a 100 years and it takes decades for theories to become scientific consensus. It's the least changing thing in all of science. Also, I don't know what you could mean by "the establishment", this term is meaningless.
hal the greatest that's kind of the point. No matter how logical science may be, 99% of its believers never actually look at the data to confirm its truth. We take what teachers tell us in school and what scientist say on tv or in magazines and accept it. As a result hardly anyone can argue the actual science behind evolution. Not unless you've "poured through the data yourself, the numbers, the figures."
Circular logic... Mac uses the knowledege of modern science to show how old scientists and philosophers were wrong. So he has to pick one. Either he believes in modern science enough to show old old scientists were wrong, in which case he'd have to be knowledgeble himself to discredit evolution, or he doesn't believe modern science. In which case, he'd have to deny all the body of knowledge in the field of physics, quantum mechanics, chemistry, etc, which allow him to drive cars, fly on planes and talk to people on the phone.
Bernardo W. he's not trying to refute science as a whole, just a certain segment of it (evolution). You don't have to either believe or disbelieve every single part of science, which is a very broad disciple.
But ted, isn't he trying to show how aristoles was wrong by believeing the earth was the center of the universe, therefore proving that scientists make mistakes? Which he can then only prove by basing himself in the knowledge provided by modern science, which tells us the earth isn't even the center of our solar system?. :) Therefore, circular logic. He refutes modern science's legitimacy by basing himself in arguments sustained by modern science.
From "scientists make mistakes" to "evolution isn't real" is a big leap. He's using circular logic and ad hominem falacies to discredit science, when he himself doesn't have any concrete argument to disprove the theory of evolution (a scientific theory, therefore based in observed facts). The only thing he MAY have proved, is the lack of knowledge by Dennis. Which, is not the same for everyone. High-school level biology and geology gives you a pretty good grasp as to why Evolution is most likely a real thing (paleonthology, geology, microbiology, embriology, etc). Therefore, he himself, is the person he is criticizing. Therefore, and again, circular logic.
The irony of this skit is brilliant, juxtaposed with the gullible comments makes it a masterpiece. The exact reason as to why he doesn't believe the scientist, is the exact reason it works. Lmfao brilliant
Ralph Richter Pretty sure I read somewhere he turned out to be right and there were some weird chemicals that were altering the sex of some species of frog. Better question though would be why are we being so autistic about a humorous anecdote?
I know it's sarcasm, but an inherent property of science is of course that there is no truth :D. Theories can get additional help of new hypotheses, but if there are too many problems a new theoretical framework has to be established. Kind of like a paradigm shift, although I think a paradigm shift is too extreme, since most of the time a new theory also includes parts of the previously accepted theory. Besides that, I think God and evolution theory are compatible if by God is meant everything that there is (not a sole being that influences our decisions or some sh1t). In this Spinozist view on God (even though Spinoza claims God is all material and also everything beyond the material world) you are god, your friend, your mum, I am, your fav pillow, the ice cream you might eat this summer, the rock in the dessert, the sun, the atoms, our emotions, everything. Well ehh, I Kinda got lost typing, have a Nice day y'all!

And Dennis is playing Charlie.

Jot that down.
You realize it's ironic, right?
Stupid science bitches
This is probably the most coherent argument Mac has ever constructed, and it is still so utterly ridiculous.
YouRSmalltime, what is your idea of "scientific journals"? True scientific journals are written for their peers, and not for the mass media.

This latest season had the highest viewership of any season so far. Still a drop in the bucket compared to the mass-ingested crap on regular tv, but a positive sign!
We Plants Are Happy Plants maybe its because with scenes like these peoples mids start working
+Allison Rose true :)
Kaumak Well I mean this is pretty much FX's best show
I love how when Dennis is like "sure. Yeah. Okay!" He has three completely different facial expressions. Perfect delivery.
@San Týr 'Lay people' are free to go get themselves a degree in science and repeat an experiment. Literally nobody controls knowledge.

We trust science because of its methodologies. Taking it on blind faith isn't part of science, it's part of religion.

2 - The way Mac and Dennis are written here well defines their characters which highlights their conflict of opinion. Honestly can’t think of another scene in the show that draws them out so sharply (Mac is so... Mac, same for Dennis). The climax and resolution effectively uses the entire cast to satirize the views of protagonist/antagonist without overextending into hyperbole and maintaining relatability
3 - Serves as a witty commentary on entrenched positions on politics, science, and religion in modern American culture with historical references adeptly woven in.
Lol, I like how you put 5 before 4. And yeah, as someone who hasn't watched this show (yet), this is pretty great comedy.

"They kept being wrong... sometimes." gets me every time
I had a similar conversation at a bar in Nashville in 2014.

"...he's got a point."
The problem is He proved that a normal person can't proof evolution right but neither did he prove evolution wrong nor did he proof that god created man. He exposed the hypocrisy but he never proved evolution wrong.
@@pravinrao3669
He didn't even expose hypocrisy.

A beautiful episode showing how the vast majority of people don’t have have arguments past appealing to authority
The argument from authority is only a fallacy if it's a false authority. Citing scientific consensus is an actual authority, hence the argument is valid.
@@-morrow who determines if an authority is false or true? The establishment. Scientific consensus is always changing
@@VashTheStampFiend No, scientific consensus isn't always changing. The theory of natural selection has now been consensus for nearly a 100 years and it takes decades for theories to become scientific consensus. It's the least changing thing in all of science.

That church bell gets me 💀
I hate the fact that I feel like Mac is making good points. I know he's wrong, but I don't know enough about science to dispute him.
hal the greatest that's kind of the point.

Ok, this is fucking hilarious :D
