I grew up on western music my whole life, and a whole lot of poppy crap... lol but when I discovered Hindustani sangeet 4 years ago, its almost all I have listened to... My upstairs neighbors probably wonder about me and my taste in music considering I play a complete raag a day usually, sometimes more.
We keep learning and finding new things every day of our lives. Western music has its own fan following. To each his/her own. If you like fusion music - I'd recommend works of Zitar by Niladri Kumar and works of Haaken Continuum by AR Rahman. They have elements from many spheres of music. The joy and melody of Hindustani Classical music heightens when you are out in the nature like a reserve, ranch or even a not-so-crowded state park.
Shane, Hindustani Classical music reaches parts of yourself that you did not know existed. Start with instrumental - sample Santoor - Shiv Kumar Sharma / Flute - Hariprasad Chaurasia / Violin - Rajam - Rag Gorakh Kalyan / Short pieces by Shahid Pervez and Sujjhat Khan ( Sitar ) AND then progress onto vocal
@@anandketkar2191 The thought is nice, but when you talk to folks online who you dont know, I wonder what makes you think to tell me to listen to instrumental first? I mean I already have, in the beginning... and even though I started with instrumental first (I also read a book that said start with that first) I dont believe everyone should start with it first. Music reaches everyone differently. Some people enjoy the vocals in hindustani right away. I get what you are saying but just realize you are talking to people who you dont know on here, thats all.

I was very fortunate to meet Panditji or Anna first in 1964. Then we met on quite a few occasions mostly in train or at airport. Surpisingly he remembered a ordinery person like me and was all ways the first to raise his hand in greeting. A very down to earth humanbeing. Great personality.
Listen to his recordings virtually everyday.
Dedicated Persons with such Divine Voice are becoming rarer ..

I have heard many times and also known and heard form people who have personally interacted with him. He was an exceptional and God gifted classical singer which no one can dispute. Besides, most important is he was a great HUMAN BEING - in that era i f you see - all great and successful people were also greta human beings besides excelling in their on respective profession - be it Sardar Patel, JRD Tata, KL Saigal or Bhimsen Joshi. I salute all such people from the bottom of my heart.

Very wonderful indeed! The other night, I was listening to Bhimsen's rendition of Raag "Kedar" and I made it through 4 minutes before I started crying. I think he is the only Hindustani singer that has made me cry. His voice touches a deep place in my heart. I cant describe it with words, but the best way I can describe it is that it sounds like Godhead calling me home, calling me to join in this never ending Hindustani concert in the cosmos... I am from the west, but nothing here feels familiar or home like. Almost everything about India does though. And mostly Hindustani Sangeet. Its like a greeting from an old friend :) Mera sachi ghar Bharat mein hein.
