- Peter, Paul and Mary perform "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" live at their 25th anniversary concert in 1986. Now, two and a half decades later, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the formation of the group in the famed Greenwich Village, this joyous yet deeply moving live concert is being first released on DVD by Shout! Factory.

The track was originally written by Pete Seeger. Peter, Paul and Mary included it on their first album released in 1962. It was one of the rare folk albums to reach US#1 - staying for over a month. The lead-off singles "If I Had a Hammer" and "Lemon Tree" reached numbers 10 and 35 respectively on the Billboard Pop Singles chart.
At the Grammy Awards of 1963, their recording of "If I Had a Hammer" won the Best Folk Recording and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal Grammies.

Lyrics:
Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the flowers gone?
Young girls have picked them everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Where have all the young girls gone, long time passing?
Where have all the young girls gone, long time ago?
Where have all the young girls gone?
Gone for husbands everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Where have all the husbands gone, long time passing?
Where have all the husbands gone, long time ago?
Where have all the husbands gone?
Gone for soldiers everyone
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Where have all the soldiers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the soldiers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards, everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Where have all the graveyards gone, long time passing?
Where have all the graveyards gone, long time ago?
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Gone to flowers, everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the flowers gone?

I am 77 years old. I have 2 Purple Hearts and was trained as a paratrooper. I volunteered to go to Vietnam because I had read the Gulag Archipelago and One Day in the Life of Ivan Ivanovich, and I knew that what those books wrote about I did not want in this world. I was evacuated twice from the field. The second time I eventually ended up at Walter Reed where I underwent reconstructive surgery. I was happy to be out of Vietnam. They made all of us paratroopers airmobile, helicopters. I saw and experienced, and did many horrible things. War is hell, and pointless. Communication is the key. I totally agree with PP&M, the song hits the truth on the head. I still don’t like the way the Russian government and Putin execute the war with Ukraine and suppress their citizens who protest the war against Ukraine.
If you’re still around, I want to thank you so much for your service and you are a treasure and if your family is here, thank you. You are so loved.

I was drafted in July 66, survived Viet Nam War and listened to the great folk songs and protest music, it’s 2024 and time to bring back Barry Maguire Bob Dylan Joan Biaz PP and M etc, their messages are still relevant
While it is decades overdue, allow me to say, "Thank you for your service and welcome home!"

2023…. Still no change….. since then Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine….. all young men dead, on all sides, human beings pumping lead into each others bodies in the name of reaching “peace”…. Land, oil, religion, POLITICS!… Cuba, Russia, china…..the list is endless…… this song still holds so much meaning for those of us who believe in the sanctity of life, for all humans and the expanse of a planet which is large enough for us all to be as separate or together as we choose!…. We’re still praying for peace! 💚
Every word you said is correct, however most people will elect or vote someone from the UNIPARTY meaning either a neoliberal or neoconservative that vote 👍 yes to EVERY single battle or war. The only politician/president we’ve had in my entire lifetime that actually tries diplomacy and a war last ideology is being smeared 24/7 by corporate media at the behest of the weapons industry. We’re headed to full scale nuclear war but msm has morons convinced Trump is the most dangerous politician.
Keep praying 😊

I am 80 now and really miss the folk music of the '60s and '70s. Peter Paul and Mary, The Kingston Trio, The Limelighters, Joan Baez, Judy Blue Eyes and all the great performers of that era... Wasn' t that a time.
One of the best anti-war songs ever, sung by one of the best trios.
But the killings goes on
I had a lot of hope in the 60's and then again as the millennium came...but war is still with us.
Composed by Peete Seegar.
But the problem is that we may all be anti-war some of us have to step up to the plate and defend our freedoms. I’m ex-British Airborne.
No one wants to fight but someone needs to be trained to do so!😢

Peter Paul and Mary captivated the spirit of the 1960s like no other. We had so much hope then. What happened? I miss Mary terribly, but I’m glad she’s at rest so she doesn’t have to see our nation like this.

From 1959 to 1962 I lived in Westminster, CA and heard songs like this, the lemon song, monster mash, Michael Row your boat, the twist, if I had a hammer and more, all on the radio, and all before anybody ever heard of the Beatles. Folk music was my first love and still makes me smile today.
In the 60's I heard them sing and fell in love with them. I especially love how they turned down record companies, when told they had to give up their protest singing, and they still turned out to be so wonderful because they refused to compromise on their principles, integrity, and that stayed with me all my life. Thanks Peter, Paul & Mary for teaching me the importance of standing up for what I believe in I know to be right.

Where Have All the Flowers Gone is based on the Russian cossack song Koloda-Duda which appears in Sholokhov's novel And Quiet Flows the Don ("Тихий Дон"). Pete Seeger read the book and the song inspired him to write the Flowers.
I think without question, the most beautiful song ever written only seconded by blowing in the wind. It’s disgusting to me that such beautiful songs such as these ever had to be written. They speak of the horrors and inhumanity of our race. I think of my friends who lost their life in Vietnam and I look back at how young and innocent they were. When I play these songs, and I do it often, it brings the image of those young children who were sent off to war. I sometimes sing these in my garage studio, but I don’t think I have the emotional control to sing them in public. When will we ever learn? How many times must the cannonballs fly, before they’re forever banned? How many times can a man turn his head and pretend he just doesn’t see? Awesome lyrics, when will we learn?
Look at our Uncle Sam. Old and. Braindead. Wearing a rainbow uniform with high heals.
No matter when or where they sing. It always lifts you up like a balloon flying to heaven. One like their spirit, never to be broken.
If we listened to music, I mean really listened to the words, then the world would be a better place. This is a song that needs to be listened to. More than ever.
the music of this era spoke volumes.......truth.........and a state of mind of young people ...........music with vision and hope...........take a minute and listen..........well said George Vreeland Hill.............
