Neurographic Art's not for me

  • When I first heard about Neurographic art I gave it a try, maybe not fully understanding it and how it should be created, I didn't find it restful or rewarding therefore I put it to one side deciding it wasn't for me. A few months ago a dear friend of mine, Gayle Agostinelli, discovered it and challenged me to have a go because she found it very calming and thought it would help me, so I tried it again and again I found it didn't work for me and this video is about why I think I find it difficult.
All said and done I could just be doing it wrong.
    Happy Crafting

Ceri, I love how you've represented your emotions and thought processes in this piece! I found great encouragement in your statement, "I'm not calling it a fail, I'm calling it a discovery". That's the mindset we need to nurture in order to avoid discouragement and to grow in our creativity. Very thought-provoking video; thanks so much for sharing!

Ceri, thank you for being “real”. I too deal with the doubts that I cannot achieve perfection in my art. I used to design for a company that sold wooden shapes. I could turn a piece of wood shaped like a bear and turn it at an odd angle and see something totally different. The company sold hundreds of my pattern packets which in turn sold thousands of the wood shapes. After the onset of mass produced finished craft decor pieces I no longer had a job. Now I work as an administrator at a public library. Until I was introduced to journal making by my daughter, who is an artist and teacher, I didn’t create or paint. I found our dear friend Gayle on CZcams and found my creative center again. I struggle now with essential tremors and fear I will not achieve my goal of an Etsy shop or CZcams channel. I cried as you spoke and created your art page. It struck so close to my heart. You have given me the courage and strength to not be afraid of reaching for my dream. Thank you so very much!!

Ceri, Thank you so much for this. I've not been outside of the house for 2 years with the exception of appointments. I know all about the dark clouds, and we need to stand up and .... admit problems. I've found great support from Ronda without a H lately, she doesn't know it but she has helped me cope with things i just can't change. I agree, this community is just the best. Conversations like this make a world of difference. You're life has brought you here at the time you were meant to be with all of the knowledge and experience you needed. I am delighted to have found Gayle as she has led me to so many wonderful Artists (of which you are one) who help so many without knowing or looking for anything in return. Lets just hope that in some way the rest of us can pay that forward in some little way. Sending you much, much Love and Thank you once again. xx

Ceri, this video has been a revelation. After watching Gayle and many others create beautiful neurographic pieces and expressing how calming and addicting the process is I was totally unable to relate. With each junction and connecting curves I was more and more stressed and almost overwhelmed. Not sure if it is perfectionism… maybe as I tend not to attempt or finish a piece I feel doesn’t measure up. I absolutely love this piece and to me it also reveals an element of the architect in you as you built this piece. As a person in my late 60’s I often wonder if I will ever find my “zone”. Thank you dear Ceri/ Nanette

I started watching your video out of curiosity because I’ve not heard of neurographic art. I was intrigued watching and listening to you. I have struggled for years with major depression and anxiety and I’ve dealt with fibromyalgia for 27 years. Perfectionism is my double edged sword. I believe it helps me to create and pay attention to detail which is very important to me. It also stops me in my creative tracks many times. It doesn’t happen often but I have found myself getting frustrated because a project is not going as I want and I will literally rip the project, like a card, destroy it as fast as I can so there is no possibility of me continuing with it. I don’t regret it because I know that I will never be happy with it not being "perfect." Although there is no such thing as perfect. I came across a poem years ago and one line is ingrained in my memory. It is - the paralysis of perfection. It seems a perfect, no pun intended, way to describe it because it can indeed be paralyzing. I also find myself comparing my work to others. My late husband used to tell me that I was my own worst enemy. My fibromyalgia makes it hard for me to create and I try to push through but sometimes I’m just not feeling well enough. Physically or mentally. It’s very frustrating. But creating is my joy, my passion. It makes me happy. Thank you for speaking about mental health. It reduces the stigma. I don’t personally feel stigmatized anymore. I’ve been through too much. But it is important for people to know that it’s okay to not be okay. Now I need to finish watching your video…I so enjoy your videos and listening to what you have to say.

Hi Ceri! I have struggled to find any joy, or calmness, in doing neurogenic art.. and I still haven't found any! ;-)
Oh you sound rather similar with what I struggle with in my life. I have depression and a bit of anxiety at times (it's much better since I retired). Art has helped me considerably. But I've been having trouble the past 3 years with finding joy in making any art. I'm doing my best to get out of my funk, including doing a total clean and re-organization of my art studio.
I totally understand what you are saying about acting, I get that. I have had so many people try to get me to do YT videos and live streams. I know I'll NEVER do a live stream! And, at least with my life as it is right now, making videos just seems like a lot of work to me.
I truly enjoy your videos and the things you create. So, thanks!

It's actually good you don't like doing something popular because it's not for everyone and you are helping people know it's okay to not like it even if it seems like everyone else does.
I know you will keep doing what works for you and learning from experiences that didn't work for you.

I found your take on neurotrophic art Interesting. I really wish we could talk about it because I have just done a few of my own. I found it really relaxing and quiet. But I am not into the whole intense counseling side if it. Just love the images and the peacefulness. The one thing I noticed that is so different from mine is the straight line images, where mine is rounded images free flowing. And I am a perfectionist so this was good for me to let go and just enjoy the process. I really enjoy your channel and while I am all American I am very British at heart as my mum and family are from or live in Scotland.
I encourage you to try this process with only random lines that begin at one edge to the other and only add rounded images to your design. See if that changes anything. Thanks so much for sharing with us. 🥰

Thanks for sharing Ceri. I long ago decided, that other people has no say in my life in the way that, only I live my life and nobody else is going to “ruin” it, because of what I think (but do not know) they think about me. I am a clinical psychologist and in my experience even the most beautiful “succesful” people have problems of different sorts, often coming from low self esteem. I have realised, because of previous jobs working with violent people, that I have to be my own best friend and that makes me strong! People struggling with mental illnesses are often the really strong people😉

Perfectionism is such a killer of creativity, and when you get to the point of 'not giving a damn', for me, it's as if my brain kicks in and just takes over my hands. I feel refreshed, and content. I don't even care if I like what I've done, it's the creating part that matters. I can't go too long without creating, because for me, that is a sign that I'm in trouble. I applaud you for trying a new style of art (and even retrying). What I love about art, is that its all personal. Not everyone is going to like doing all of the forms of art. And not everyone will enjoy seeing all of the different type of art. It doesn't invalidate any of the art- it may feel that way because alot of artists feel their art is an extension of themselves. More often than not, its just the observer's personal taste.

If I approached the crafting projects I make with the thought in mind that I am creating art, I'd give it up. It would be an exercise in egoism. A real artist does not perform with the desire to create "art". He or she works in order to express something that is a reflection of what is inside them, the essence of who they are as a human being. There is no valuation placed upon what they make. The ego is the origin that places the term art on what is created. The ego is a tool of the will to power, the insidious aspect of human nature that rules through force and inauthenticity. The things I make within the realm of crafting are just the products of what I do to pass the time. Other than making sure I give a project my best effort, I do no suffocate my efforts by placing valuations on them that are the product of my ego. I have fun. I live my life without unnecessary budens placed upon me by trying to be what I am not. I strive for authenticity in order to be honest with myself and with others. Many years ago I read in Joseph Campbell how the ego prevents us from living authentic lives. In Buddhism the personal ego is seen as a power that prevents one from achieving nirvana. Over the years I've tried to recognize when I fall victim to my ego and deny its influence in my view to life. As a result, I am much happier and am easier to be around. I make story books because it's fun. I don't create them in order to tell others about my "art". My friends would laugh in my face if I did that. So, I use crafting to relax, to express a bit of my inner self. There is no valuation placed on what I do because the goal is not " art". The goal is to live a happy, fulfilled life. And, because of this I can truthfully say I've never been happier in my entire life!!

So I tried the basic with the intention of bringing focus and calm before I began working on my current painting. It worked!
