- All aboard! It's time once again for a model train video! As a continued celebration of 150 years since the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, the theme for this video will be Union Pacific. We'll see models of the Union Pacific 844 and the 4014 Big Boy pulling both passenger and freight trains as well as modern diesels and Union Pacific's famed Gas-Electric Turbine locomotive, the most powerful locomotive ever built! Multiple pass bys of the models are accompanied by video clips of some of the real trains in action. So pull up a seat and enjoy some n scale Union Pacific model trains!

@The Kamloops Railfan I have an N scale F40PH and SP GP35 and although they're dummy units, they're pretty well detailed even tho the F40PH was like 100 bucks. (I got the GP35 from my grandfather)

A very nice layout and video. I was extremely fortunate to go to the Golden Spike Sesquicentennial (with my mother and about 40+ other people) and see these magnificent locomotives, though I'm admittedly still very much a novice when it comes to model railroading. If you or anyone else is interested in reading about the Transcontinental Railroad, I recommend "Empire Express" by David Haward Bain, as it provides a detailed history from inception to construction to the driving of the Golden Spike.

Very nice, Mike! Were these models all N scale trains? And among these models, was the FEF made by Kato, the Big Blow Turbine made by ScaleTrains and the Big Boy 4-8-8-4 made by Athearn? Since you had both steam locos plus modern UP diesel power, why didn't you put them all together in a consist as the video of the prototypes showed that you intermittently drew upon for reference?
Initially, I thought UP's use of a diesel locomotive in the actual Big Boy/FEF consist looked ugly and demonstrated the railroad's fears about potential breakdown of the fresh-out-of-the-shop Big Boy. But boy was I way off on that one. As it turns out, the diesel accompanied the two steam locos to provide dynamic braking on downgrades to save the brakeshoes on the steam locos.
Yesterday, John Abatecola from TSG Multimedia released his monthly CZcams podcast featuring a video interview with a key UP representative behind the Big Boy's restorarion. Sure hope in the not too distant future 4014 can get to pull a freight train again and I think when it does it it does it without a water tender and a crew car behind it and so it can make it look like it was a photo and video footage that was filmed and taken straight out of the 50s
