  • Freelancing! The atypical worker's dream (kinda)! Whenever someone asks what I do it is always a long, complicated answer so I felt like this video was kinda inevitable. I generally get my money from audio, music, writing, and on-set work but everything changes from one month to the next as it goes.
    It is indeed an escape from a 9-5, but I thought I'd go over the sometimes trying process of getting your first client, budgeting, and finding your footing as a freelancer.
    Hope this is helpful for someone lol.

    im only in the middle of watching this video but i am someone who is trying to really get into freelancing now as an artist myself. but in 2018 i was walking full time for a dog walking company and you worked in a joe and the juice in the same neighborhood that i was walking dogs in. insane to think that like i maybe would have seen you there or something during the time and you're on a path work wise that i am really trying to make work for me at this point in time. i love little coincidences like that lol. love your content!

    thank you for this video! i'm looking to be a musician as a career, and have been thinking of what i want my relationship to work and making money within the creative field to look like. this video was immensely helpful in letting me know that there are other ways to do the thing outside of the 9-5 schema.

      Of course! Happy to hear that and best of luck :D It's not always the easiest but it's definitely worth it when it comes to facilitating time for your art

    Great video. I'm going down this path myself coming from the very structured corporate 9-5 office job world. It's hard to know where to start and what you can even do. I love how honest you are, and I feel much better about everything after getting a glimpse of how you do it.
    Have you ever considered teaching music lessons? That's something else I've been considering.

    Algorithm Boost Comment. I must say it's great to hear a different voice on this part of life. It's shame we have to divest so much of our time to work, but that's how are economic system works. I'm more so leaning toward freelancing because it's like the best path in order to do music more often than not. Unlike in 9-5's or 6-6 jobs. College really should be free for everyone. Trade school seems more sustainable, more so because of a more pronounced union presence. Who knows I might hop into becoming an Electrician if I want a more secure path. But for now music is more of my focus.
    Thank you so much for your thoughtful advice.

      THIS! I almost went down the trades path for that reason-- I love the concept of being able to learn different skills as long as you're willing to go under someone's wing. It's a shame how prohibitively expensive higher education is. AND YES! Make all the music! 🫶

    What freelance platforms would you recommend? and do you just use a website as a portfolio? great video !!

      I've used Upwork in the past and yes! Or sometimes it's as simple as writing a paragraph or two and sending Google Drive links to my work examples

    Thank you for being so honest! I’m thinking about freelancing too & I was curious if you remember about how long it took for you to be able to quit your job at guitar center and do freelance completely? Sorry if I missed it in your video.

    • @KateBrunotts
      @KateBrunotts  Před 12 dny

      Of course! That's amazing and for sure, somewhere between 1-2 years I think? Granted I was making minimum wage at Guitar Center so it didn't take as much time to replace that income but for a while I was doing it during my lunch breaks and after coming home tired from work so that's definitely the most challenging stretch 😭
