    What I don't understand is how companies can say they don't want to take the risk with juniors but are fine with low quality outsourcing of cybersecurity to places like India.

      Probably outsourcing the liability too. What if they take up services from oversea contractors. If the contractors fail it isn't the client company's fault. I don't exactly know how it works but that's my guess.

      Agreed. I think tech and cyber freelancing/contracting roles are going to be a more common way to break into tech if companies dont hire entry level candidates, it's just a really rough job market overall

      @@WithSandra It is very rough & they want ppl to wear multiple hats & lump all IT fields in one job description, thinking all IT is the same. It’s like lumping all Doctors together, you wouldn’t do that in a description b/c there are different fields as a doctor to specialize in. So why would it be any different in IT.

      Graduated with a CS degree in April of 2023. Been an intern in a contract role since May of 2022. Had banked on getting a promotion by staying on as an intern. Then in 2023 my entire team & managers who were trying to get me promoted got laid off, hiring freeze ensued, base of software engineering got moved to India and that promotion died. Still making $23/hr so I can at least afford my $1000k/month student loan payments, but still 90k in debt and unhappy. I've probably applied to over a thousand jobs at this point over the past like 16-18 months and very little. Got one 4 hour onsite interview with technical with engineers, HR, and managers. Didn't get the job. Closest I think I got was a DoD that does work with nuclear submarines but they GHOSTED me after the 2 phone interviews (which were incredibly easy, no coding required even) which I thought went well according to the engineers on the 2nd one. Requisition never even got closed, no "we've selected other candidates email", but the manager butt dialed my phone number the day after my interview and immediately hung up before I could answer the call, so I could read the room. Now all I get is scammers from Indonesia texting my phone via whatsapp trying to offer me "remote part time work" lol 2024 is rough

    For me (and this is 100% just my experience) I had the feeling that as soon as I got a Job in cybersecurity, immediately afterwards every company went to try to seduce me to switch over. I transitioned from a sysadmin role to an it security engineer (not junior in the title, but literally having no security knowledge besides sysadmin basics) basically companies offered me to switch into any other company as a security engineer. The first step into the industry is so so hard for people, but as soon as they are in, doors are wide open. But this is just my experience and just for my country (Germany), so I can't speak for the US or any other country. But it felt so weird that just month prior, none of these would consider me being capable, but as soon as you're in, you're in.

      Yeah my dad does hiring for a fortune 50 this sounds about right. I think the normalization of switching jobs every couple of years to get better pay is also part of the problem. I wish the companies could see sense.
      Folks are just not thinking long term. They lose the opportunity to prevent bad habits as well. Seasoned people tend to get habits along the way that have to be broken. Easier to just train that away in the first place.

      Yeah, that's what currently happening in every country as a fresher you struggle to get into industry but once you in your move on and you have multiple opportunities..

      I feel if they are going to use ATS to scan resumes then they might as well use AI to get rid of HR altogether. I've met some lazy recruiters too in my day.

    I have nearly a year experience of working in both IAM and GRC and have a good, reviewed resume and I still get endless rejections after applying to 150+ jobs. One worthwhile interview and no offer yet. It’s bleak out here.

      Try reapplying after you have 5-7 years of experience. That’s the minimum I’m seeing right now. One year of experience isn’t competitive

    I so agree with your stance on this video.. it is so hard to find a legitimate entry-level job and those same positions have hundreds of applicants at times and this makes them even more scarce.

      @@WithSandra I'm a graduating software engineer that has interned with a bunch of startups in Silicon Valley. I get an invite from recruiters at least once a day for big tech google amazon meta spacex ect mainly interested in my three.js 3d/ar web dev work, but the question that arises is "Do you have at least 5 years of paid experience?".
      I'm more interested in C++ game dev anyway and consider web dev a hobby to offer to artists I reach out to, so yah it is basically freelancing. If I were to do it full time forever, I'd be using a bot to cold call every business in the US, but that isn't really my style. It's my goal to work with competent triple AAA teams. But my advice to other entry levels would be to try to create and lead your own work opportunities on impressive, relevant, monetizable projects catered to who you're applying to, the generic javascript weather apps "familiarity with python and html resumes" and bootcamp projects don't cut it anymore.

      This is the way to go. Everybody’s stumbling over one another to apply for the same roles because there’s not enough of them. We need to start innovating and thinking more entrepreneurial like they did in the 90s/00s. Contribute to the industry by hiring others, don’t be another statistic looking for a job.

    the job market for literally EVERYTHING is shit rn. undecided sophmore in college rn and I'm planning to major in IT and minor in cybersecurity. I feel like no matter what major you take you're cooked. shit's so frustrating

      It's bad now, but it will pass. The economy will likely turn around by the time you graduate. If you decide to major in cyber security, get the intro certs while you're still in school. CompTIA sec+, Google cybersecurity,band isc2 CC.
      Apply to all cybersec/infosec internships.
      When you graduate with experience from internships and certifications, you'll be competitive.

    I see roles that are so unicorn or ridiculous especially the compensation they require. Even in some penetration testing roles the billets they require is a unicorn. Smh this job market really has me on eyebrow raise.

      For starters the term "cybersecurity" is just marketing. That isnt a real thing. If you work in IT that is cyber and if you do anything related to security that is self explanatory.
      But the reality is many of these real jobs people are talking about is not something mean for people with no experience. Hence it is not a true entry level field.
      That is just something they sell people on in order to sell them on training and fake degree programs.

    Good insights there Sandra.
    I'll just add this...
    There is a shortage of the people with the high end skills that are really in demand.
    What there is no shortage of is people who heard "shortage" and were incorrectly led to believe that an undergrad degree or a 1 month bootcamp or whatever will be enough to get in the door and start earning 100K.
    So there are unfortunately a lot of people in this bracket or 'shoes' and still a shortage of people three levels above them, this, you have nicely summed it up in the conversation.
    What I'm gonna add to anyone reading this however is, don't give up the stuff you love, keep practicing and honing those skills and at the same time, keep looking for the most basic level jobs, could even be HelpDesk, or whatever, to get your foot in the door and start getting industry experience.

    Just got my a.s. degree in IT. Enrolling in WGU later this yr to work towards bachelors. Trying to at least get my foot in the door of the IT industry. Watching this video hasn't dampened my goal of switching careers and getting into the field but it s damn sure letting me know that it's only going get harder in land a job within the next year or so.

      You should be searching desperately for a part time internship while in school. The 4 yr degree is useless right now for getting hired. The knowledge you will get is invaluable but hiring managers will not care one bit. Been searching since November last year

      @@mattmoon782 There lays the issue. I work full time and I'm married with a child. I'm also currently studying for the A+ and trying to take courses on Sophia to transfer in to WGU. Can't really fit in an internship right now. Unix guy posted a video not too long ago about some online internships ppl can sign up for. I may look into those after I'm done with the A+ exams.

    In my country there is literally no job without 2 yr of experience and If there is a exception they asked a 5 or 6 certification like comptia, CEH So being a fresher or recently passout how could I afford that big list of certificate.. I don't know what should I do now I'm totally out of mind

    I would say while getting that certificate or degree, do alot of bug bounties, virtual labs you have made, and ctf. Showing more than enough proof you have what it takes

    My suggestion for people. Look into Government Jobs. They do have Entry level positions and sometimes people dont even know how to look for them. It might not be the one you are looking for. But like you said, sometimes you got to get the foot on the door.

    I graduated with an MS in Cybersecurity in Feb with many certs, and I have over 10years of IT experience ranging from helpdesk, sysadmin, to tech manager. I got outbid for a CS Analyst role by someone with Sr. CS experience with only a Sec+ cert. Like sir, why are you here? lol 😅

    This is exactly why I'm going for a trade job first. Then go after a tech job. So whole I fill out those 100's of tech job applications. I'll still be making money until I can finally land a tech job or if I was to get layed off. Because normal people dont have time to play all these cat and mouse games. Also I have a feeling the tech companies want to only hire immigrants willing to work for less money.
