  • Cummins believes that the internal combustion engines we’ve relied on for years can be run on a range of cleaner fuels with reduced carbon emissions. This is definitely something that will sound appealing to the people who still have a soft spot for ICE powered vehicles. And now, the company has announced that it will show its next-generation hydrogen engine to the construction industry for the first time at Intermat 2024. This engine has got a lot of people talking, and for good reasons.

    H2 IS PROFOUNDLY DUMB: Here's the deal. Commercially, H2 is made from combining 1000-degree steam H2O + CH4 (methane). This partially burns the methane, leaving CO2 + H2. It's incredibly cheap, so no one makes H2 from PV solar electrolysis (at least not much of it). The CO2 is Still Released !! Thus, anyone talking about this is just trying to shift the burning from the car to the H2 factory. PLUS, H2 is super, super, super light and it's $+++ to compress it and ship it anywhere, usually in super-huge tanks. This is why no one is buidling H2 fuel cells, or H2 anything. It's Dumb. Granted, people that pump methane/natural-gas wells, they want to sell it, but otherwise, No. Bad. Plan.

    I’m hoping this happens soon in Ontario to convert our fleet to Hydrogen as the company want to go more green and do not like the EV solution.

    It's all about infrastructure, if there's no place readily available to get fuel it won't fly.

    So, how do they address safety in a vehicle that has an extremely explosive gas in their fuel cells and lines? I remember how volatile hydrogen was in just a simple little chemistry experiment in school. I'm sure that they aren't planning on using a heavy high-pressure tank as a cell, and how do they protect lines and fittings from potential leaks and or impacts? I realize that lithium batteries have a potential for a run away fire, but they're not a potential bomb.

      From what I understand, when hydrogen leaks it doesn't explode in flames, but rather it dissipates quickly into the air because there is nothing to ignite it. It isn't as dangerous as it's portrayed to be, or rather, there are more modern fuels that are similarly as dangerous as hydrogen. Modern hydrogen tanks are made from many materials such as carbon fiber to make it resistant to such leaks and punctures, and fuel lines don't really need that much protection in the first place because they will not contain that much pressure anyways.

    LOL LOL. Yes inefficient and expensive to run. From green energy to wheel energy what is the efficiency, like 30%? Compare to EVs at 80%

    And where are you going to store the hydrogen?
    A Hydrogen engine are just 15-20% efficient. So, you need 5 times more hydrogen.
    The price of hydrogen are also to high.
    So, a car with 5 times the storage for the hydrogen, and a price 4-5 times that of gasoline.

    OK, yes you can run an engine on hydrogen. But where do you get H? I don't have a well and neither do you. Yes there is electrolysis that HS experiment, only thing is we need about 10,000 times more, that takes a LOT of electricity. Most. commercial H is made by stripping the carbon off natural gas, where does it go? It's released to the atmosphere as CO2, back to square one. CO2 is a small part of the atmosphere and essential to life on earth (take Bio 101) why are we here?

      Look up hydrogen powered muscle truck by creator Stapleton 42. I was skeptical too but it is possible and there are people out there that have been working every day for the past 20 years figuring out how to do it. From what I understand it came down to timing and injectors. Really cool stuff.

    Sorry to disappoint you, but to any knowledgeable person, hydrogen as long been dead-on-arrival, at least for light road transport. For heavy transport, it is likely to be the same, but the jury is still out. There might be a few such applications, though.
    A hydrogen-fueled IC engine is simply the weirdest of ideas I have come about in my career in the field. It is a desperate attempt by Cummins... and a few others.
    It does not mean that "green" hydrogen is not very much needed... but to replace "grey" (I personally prefer saying "black") hydrogen in 100 million tons of industrial applications!!!
    "Blue" hydrogen? A scam!
    From somebody with several years of professional experience in hydrogen hydrolysis development.

      So you are saying it is a waste of time?
      Green hydrogen industry seems to be developing at a record pace.
      Heavy industry vehicles from my research seem to be a good option for green hydrogen powered ICE’s

      @@Meh-yy1hi ICE burning green hydrogen??? That would be the most senseless of all technologies! Burning a very high-quality and very high-cost fuel in a woefully inefficient 19th century technology piston engine is just not going to happen... except in some fantasies of Mr Akyo Toyoda!
      Green hydrogen has a bright future, and is developing very fast (out of a very small base, though)... in industry, where it has to replace some 100 million tons a year of grey hydrogen. But NOT in road transport.
      As to heavy industrial vehicles for things like mining or earth-moving, the leaders, such as Caterpillar or Komatsu, are going electric.
      Basically, if you have to store, and even worse transport green hydrogen, you destroy its economics. If the hydrogen is used as such, i.e. as an atom, not as an energy vector, then green hydrogen is a winner!

    Sorry, but a hydrogen can never beat full electric without violating the laws of physics. Some energy is lost creating the hydrogen and more lost converting it back to energy. And hydrogen engines are even less efficient than hydrogen fuel cells. Add to that the costs of storage and distribution, lack of infrastructure etc and you will see why hydrogen has failed as an alternative to fossil fuels.

      Yet 70% of all electricity is made by burning fossil fuels. HHO is more efficient to make than Diesel btw its the closest to almost breaking even actually.. all other fuels are way less efficient when made.

      Battery electric semi trucks can't go very far. They also weigh a LOT. And guess what, those batteries only last a few years. Diesel hybrid and hydrogen trucks would make a lot of sense to me.

    I am sick of seeing this type of videos claiming to destroy the EV industry must be over 100 times by now. There is nothing simpler and more cost effective than running an electrical motor that has the least number of moving parts!

      Eventually everything will go electric but we still need to figure out the battery systems, charging systems, energy creation and how to recycle batteries without creating volitile environmemtal compounds. We dont have feasable options at this point so hydrogen could be a good bridge for the next 50-100 years.
      Even when we do go all electric. Hydrogen may likely be the key power generation source instead of coal or nuclear.

      @@gunsumwong3948 A bus or even a tractor trailer is a large platform to be able to have lots of batteries. I am thinking more of the light truck industry (RAM 5500 and down).
