      I have never seen anyone ever level any trim. In fact the "eye" is much more important than level/plumb. No one wants to ask "is the floor out of level or is it the base that is out of level?

      This is how we do high end trim here in central FL minus the laser (although it’s a good idea) I’ll throw a level on stuff and measure for parallel to outlets, window aprons, etc. scribe it all down even n tight people pay for that $$$

      Laser is a good idea.. I guess.. If it's new construction. Old houses can be significantly out of level.. Like 1/2" or more across a room.. Not worth all the effort and it would be more noticeable if the bottoms were all cut 1/2"

    Not only do I precut my trim. I also prime and paint it before install. Then I just tackity tack it in place with a little touch up at the end. Easey peasey

    Production mentality works if your the one that framed it and finished it but every single house I’ve been in, the walls and doors aren’t actual 90s so there’s always new bevel cuts that need to be made on the trim

    • @brendancurtin679
      @brendancurtin679 Před 7 měsíci

      Yeah, I think he just meant not nailing it in until the end. You still custom cut, scribe, and cope all the pieces for where they go. You put them in place (dry fit) to make sure they’re right. But you don’t nail them in until the end.
      It doesn’t seem like it would save much time, but if you’re doing a bunch, it does actually go faster to not be switching between steps. You can get in a groove with a step and go faster doing that same step to multiple pieces.
      I’ll do this with like cutting up onions too. If I’m cutting up several, I find it faster to cut them all in half, then peel them all, then do the slices in them all, then cut across to dice. It honestly does go much faster that way.

      All the time nobody takes the time to plumb and square the framing and old white man taught me how to frame and build story poles and we always plumbed and squared the walls with kickers and checked again and the. Sheeted. Nice guy worked his whole life passe when he retired at 82 passed at 83

    Cut your biggest pieces first - this way if you make a mistake, you can use the mistaken piece for smaller pieces.

    I don't trust my measurements enough to cut the whole room first.

    • @owencope7002
      @owencope7002 Před 7 měsíci +1

      If you walk in and start your measurements next to a door, it's hard to get wrong, either carry a scrap piece to help with your scribe measurements or learn the thickness.
      I do tricks like sectioning off each type of cut in the room. Square cuts i draw a square on my scrap and list measurements
      Scribe i labelled S
      Long is L
      But then you also have to provide a side for your scribes/ cuts.
      If you walk into the room and the flat wall is on the left of the door, you label left, same if opposite applies. This will then be the side of your scribes for the room. Starting with a flat piece next to a door is best because you can cut smaller allowing for the expansion and contaction next to the arch, therefore never pushing your door out of wack.
      The rest dont matter as much as they fall in next to a wall and can either be covered by your next scribe or be tight against the wall.
      And for measuring long to a scribe you simply measure the wall. The long to short point of the skirting will be the same measurement

      @user-hh6hd5sn1k dont forget to add a nail behind the skirting when placing next to archs, clout or soffit nail. Helps make that skirting extra flush when you shoot it and tap it to meet

    Whenever guys claim to cut entire rooms or floors of base or crown at once in advance, I wonder if they apply this method to bright work or only to paint grade. Also, this technique seems limited to new construction. We renovate lots of older structures. It would take a better mechanic than me to precut all without inviting trips back to the saw and/or wasted stock. In my experience, wall corner and scribe conditions can make a piecemeal approach more reliable if the existing conditions are irregular and the required standard is perfect joints. I

      I only do it in new builds on paint grade . Especially in brilliant where you get £900 to 2nd fix a 3 bed house . So door stops, architrave and skirting need to done in a day 😂

      @stephentoby8750 Understood. Knowing how to adjust to job conditions and client/budget constraints or requirements is what makes a pro. My comment was a reaction to the many IG and YT posters who declare, withiut caveat, that you can blow through entire floors of trim with virtually no individual fitting. Cheers!

    I dont get why people like making dust plumes and leaving dust bunnies all over the place with sanders. Scribe with a knife, run it through the table saw with a back bevel, block plane to the scribe. The way it looks when you plane to where it's scored is obvious with the way the shavings fly off. Very fast, efficient, and perfect. Just gotta trust your scribed markings.

      Cut all your pieces and dry fit or loosely tack them in place level. Find the lowest point where you'll have the largest gap. The size of the gap is what you cut your scribe block at and scribe your line all the way around.

      Either scribe or add shoe molding. For modern houses baseboard set into the wall and flush with the floor looks great. For most every other house, floor matched shoe mold adds a nice finishing touch.
