  • Tree trimming and climbing with a pre-installed Aerial Rescue Line: Experiment #1 May 6, 2020
G'day friends, this is something that I have been wanting to experiment with for a while now: how much of a pain is it to climb and work a tree with a secondary climbing rope and system already set up and ready to go? Now, I know that this doesn't address any of the other factors, such as having someone on the ground who is competent enough to climb up and perform a rescue, having all of the necessary gear on hand at all times for that rescue, etc, etc, but I see this as the very first step towards that end goal: can we get in a habit of using a secondary line, and can we tolerate working around it? Join Tom and I as we experiment with this idea...

Man, you seem like a great guy to work with. You’re never barking at your ground guy, your communication is spot on. I’ve worked with climbers who just bury you, don’t communicate at all and get pissed off when you make a mistake, or can’t read their mind. Keep up the good work!

Love the commentary and how you explain for all of us to learn. 23 years doing tree work and even longer with logging in the woods with my grandpa from 8yr on. I’m now 40. Never to late to learn something new

I greatly appreciated this video. The small details of what gear and techniques you implement and why are incredibly helpful to someone entering the craft.

Good video man, i would have a rescue line but you also need someone who can use the rescue line, I've thought of implementing a ground lowering base anchor but my feeling is that if I'm doing something serious I am gonna have my lanyard on anyway. Thanks for sharing stay safe man 👊🇨🇦

I believe six months ago I demonstrated this process for 2 climbing systems one at the bottom and the one at the top the climber is on?! This is and always will be one of the best release systems foreground man and the climber to both have recognized and fully understand it's working capabilities

really enjoying the innovation. Ive done similar pre-set up system in the past but since most people i currently work with find in unnecessary , i no longer use it BUT i think any tree 75' are taller is a great way to be safe n concinous of dangerous our line of work is well fun is fun we are tree people .. love that your sharing in excellent video ..

Yo Patrick, nice video and insight in your thought process. Working in a much more regulated industry in Germany, we are pretty used to having an additional line in the tree (and a second climber on the ground). But I can see the downside of having to work around it, especially when there is rigging involved. Nevertheless I think one can get used to it. Watching the video, I had the idea of attaching the rescue line to the part of your climbline which is going down to the base anchor (with a prusik chord maybe). That way, you could retrieve both lines at the same time. Obviously it would depend on the amount of friction through redirects etc. Also you would need a detachable climbing device that you take off before retrieving. I haven't tried it myself though, so I'm not sure if it's worth it or just a pain. Cheers!

Iv just brought an ART rope guide twin line which offers this exact system when set up but it can be done from the ground, I'm looking forward to using it.

It always baffles me when some families just stick around getting their eardrums blasted by the chipper xD

As long as the guy on the ground knows how to tie hitches why don't you set the safety line then just have him set up the climb system once the rope is in place that way he doesn't have to hold the climb system as your pulling the rope up. Just a thought.

Is the 12-strand line you're using a hollow braid like a Tenex Tec? Do you like it as a rigging line, compared to a Teufelberger Sirius or equivalent? Wondering how it works when lowering with blocks and breaks and how it feels to knot. Thanks for the great videos!

by all means this is not the end all be all. However, it is an extremely important conversation that needs to be had. I recently uploaded a video on a type of anchor that also addresses this issue feel free to check it out and drop a comment on it. Stay safe and healthy. Cheers.

with second rope that you install, now you can added back-up device on it incase your main line is a bit compromised
