Rigging down an Oak beside a bunkie - teamwork and patience
This is footage from September 2022, a little oak takedown right beside a bunkie. Big shoutout to my stellar ground crew - Tom and Kendal, handling this monster like true professionals, and Alex running the skid steer.

I had forgotten all about that song for 40 years or so. Nice job.
We got our Bigshot marked out with rings of tape for different distances and use an 8oz bag, this great tool if you work urban commercial properties with tall trees close to buildings. 10-12oz will likely take a window out if this go south, 8oz usually bounces back. But at times it lacks momentum for really tall trees.
Bro, I kept yelling at the screen, "PUT YOUR FACE MASK DOWN!!!!!!"
how much do you think it would take to break one of these ratchet straps? i have a 2500kg one, and i have a tree thats at a 45 degree angle, i wanna strap near the top and crank/pivot it back as i cut the base, its hanging over a fence and i just wanna pull it back then cut it more safely on my side, but im worried it might break the strap
I wouldn't use a strap for that. I would rope it and then tension with a Maasdam. Straps are great for securing and making sure something doesn't come out, not great for actually pulling something together more than a few inches. Does that make sense?
@@TreeMuggs_PatrickM hmmm fair enough yeah makes sense, thanks for the advice, the tree in question is kinda like a big slingshot V shape, so i was planning to use one side to ratchet (several ratchets to be safer) the other side away from the fence as i slowly cut the base half way through
Suupergood idea, makes total sense! Thanx!
Nice… chestnut oak?
GREAT video. I'm ready to order my 1st Port-a-Wrap. Should I order it with a Whoopie Sling or Sling ? Whoopie vs Sling ? Thx -Randy Marko
Ultra/pocket sling or deadeye sling if it was me
Thank you Patrick, Learning a lot from your videos. Looking forward to many more. -Randy
Educated climber been educatin them groundmen
It is cheap and lasts forever. Awesome bit of kit. Great tutorial a lot of first timers need a talk through like this.
Very cool!!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for taking the time to teach.. I pray you have a prosperous year!
I finally got one of these, went with the self adjusting bolard version. It Wont run atall on tachyon ash or cherry bomb and tending was too stiff on hyperclimb - an 11.2mm rope. What ropes work best with this version? I can see you're using km3 max in some of the bone vids.
I've had good results on km3, rebel, squir, blue moon
hell yeah great example love it
PROFESSIONALISM!
Nice job! I know you have to edit these videos for brevity but I for one would love to see it in its entirety, the "uncut" version so to speak. I know it'd be a long video but seeing every detail start to finish would be very cool! The lil' Husky seems to eat through the oak like it's butter, pretty impressive :)
Did you think about speed lining this tree. Seems like it was a good candidate
what did you bid the job at
That was a serious piece of work. I hope you all were well compensated. Fascinating to see it all from the first person viewpoint showing the rigging process in great detail. No words necessary.
Enjoyed the video. Nice job climbing, rigging and chunking. Kudos to the ground crew....nice rope work.
Hey buddy good to see you post, what device are you climbing on?
Bulldog bone
Nice job!
Big fan of a pull line on poles. Safer / more efficient and allows hinge to be less than perfect.
Agreed
Thanks for the video!
Good good job bro respect 🫡 Merci pour ta video 🙏 c’est toujours impressionnant de te regarder et magnifique ta petite tronçonneuse électrique ⚡️☝️✌️🙏
How come you dont use the clip provided on the 540ixp to clip saw onto tool carrier on your harness?
I use it sometimes
Great job guys, thanks for sharing.
"Forget about the money"
Very nice, video was well edited, the climb was well thought out and executed smoothly as if with no effort at all. When I climb I sound like an obscene phone call.
Good to see ya been awhile thanks for the video Hell of a job
Good to see ya, been a while! Thanks as always for sharing. Helluva Job! 🙂
Around 3:40 almost thought you unclimbed with no other tie ins for a second! Really had me going there dude 🫣 lmao SAFETY FIRST ALWAYS! I seen your line after 😅😂
i am afraid of heights so i enjoy watching you do this
✊️💯
Super!
Slipped bowline? What a Chad.
Why not back it up with a rope to the main stem (opposite to the force)?
Smart
You must be preparing to cut it big!!
I don't think that's necessarily true. The fishing pole is used when you need to drop weight straight through the stem but the stem is weak and there's no other anchor points for rigging.
Great zero gear solution, and I love the sound design. God is a master musician
Ooooooh! Me likey!!
I find it resists deformation under heavy pulls much better than the standard "better half hitch" or two on the throat. It also resists rotation better when pulled in the "wrong" direction. In the video here I show back-tying it to really get all the slack out and make it super tight. Precision placement of hardware is essential for real riggers, and the "pedigree" is as precise as it gets. Give it a try. - Patrick
@@TreeMuggs_PatrickM definitely will. After I watched that method for the cow hitch you showed a little ways back, I have been using it all the time. This is beautiful. Deepest thanks for all your contributions to the community.
One thing i see most knot tying videos fail to show…is a backup prussik on the rope below the main knot in the event the rope gets wet or the knot decides to not grip as desired…
Question: What would happen if your cut fell in the opposite direction of how you wanted it (180°)? Would that disrupt your friction ring at all, or would it still work at usual? 3:36 is my reference point for this.
Seems a bit redundant to me 😎
This is the best training on how to tie this super-useful knot that I have found. Your method is the easiest to follow and the explanation also is clear and easy to follow. A bonus - I love the trick with the stick to make it easy to untie even after the knot has been under a lot of tension. I keep a few of these sticks in my rope bag now. Thank you!
Where is the original left hand side of the GRCS?
I ditched it. Never liked that setup
@@TreeMuggs_PatrickM Gotcha! May consider a chaffe sleeve on your sling where it connects to GRCS.
Done 👍
I love my BDB. Might be my favorite mechanical device. I have never figured out if there is a purpose for the hole in the center. I thought at first it was to attach the end of the rope for climbing MRS but I'm not sure. Anyone know?
Awesome never thought of that. Maybe will save me some head scratching in a future over shot/ inaccuracy etc
Whats the deal muggs? That isnt the original ratchet strap so you wanted to back it up?
Nice ✊️
I’m in love 😍!!
