  • In this video we show you a quick tour of our new orchard project that we're starting on the back of the property using Syntropic Agroforestry principles. This is our first time trying out this method of growing food, so we are excited to take you guys on a journey with us as we learn from our experience.
Here is a useful article that explains Syntropic Farming:

Aloha from Orchidland! We are essentially doing the same with our farmstead, a Syntropic/silvo pasture type combo. We have Kunekunes so we lean more silvo. I love watching your videos, thank you for posting them!

Did you know inga fixes 3x more nitrogen than glyricidia? However you can purchase more vigorous rhizobium and innoculate your glyricidia to make it more efficient at fixing nitrogen. Leucaena aka haole koa fixes 20 times more nitrogen than inga, im going to trial it and see if its allelopathic compounds offset its amazing nitrogen fixing capabilities. Syntropic is so fun, its like a puzzle with endless combinations and spacing possibilities!

Thanks for the comment! Good metaphor, syntropic being like a puzzle. The reason I like to use gliracidia is because it grows very long and straight branches which can make chipping them really easy. I hadn’t really put much thought into how much nitrogen each plant produces so thank for that info. 😉 We use ice cream bean as well on the property but just not in this system as of now.

Yeah inga is a lot harder to manage with hand tools than glyricidia. And glyricidia gives a more dappled light that's better for growing in close proximity to other plants like cacao. But inga is better for animal fodder. Personally I think albezia is the best, it's so easy to break up the branches and mulch it by hand.

Great video - you are inspiring me to do more in my garden.
I want to share with you a plant called the elephant bush (Portulacaria afra).
It is edible and PACKED with Vit C - a very useful plant that looks after itself.
If you don’t have it already in your garden, it’s worth researching it out.
Thanks for sharing your awesome garden with us - God bless your family.
