As a side note, these switches are completely serviceable. Take it out, pop off the side cover, pull out the copper spring loaded contacts, clean off the fretting, apply a dab of dielectric grease to the contacts and voila! Completely good as new for free!

The brake lights on my F-150 quit working. Step 1- checked the fuse, it was OK. Step 2 - look up CZcams video on how to replace brake light switch. Step 3 - ordered the part from 1A Auto Parts and Step 4 - installed it in 5 minutes. Brake light working.
Thank you CZcams and 1A Auto Parts.

This was a huge help! I have a 2004 Ford Explorer. I checked on their website and other auto parts stores around me, and none of them had this exact replacement for my vehicle. I had to end up cutting the wires so I could use the new adapter. It wasn't too difficult. This video was spot on to get me to that point. Thanks!

This thread appears to be from "way back" but, today, it rocked my world! Besides the brake lights, I had noticed that my cruise control no longer worked. I had a theory about that and I was right: New brake light switch and the CC also works now! Thanks so much for the video!

I found this to be very helpful. Using your video I was able to quickly locate the switch. I removed the green cotter pin fastener, then slid the switch off the post and disconnected it from the harness. Once I had the switch on my workbench, I took the case off of it. This exposed 3 pairs of copper contacts. 2 of the 3 were a little scorched / pitted where they make contact. I removed each pair and used a wire brush to clean them up. I put them back in the switch. Then put the switch back in the car. Now my brake lights work!

My brake lights kept coming on by themselves, killed my battery 3x. After weeks of trouble shooting, I decided to start unplugging the switch whenever I'd leave the truck parked for a while...& Boom, no more dead battery. I bought this part last week, just installed it. So far so good!

About $60 for a new one. Wish I read the comment about cleaning the contacts. Keep an eye on that plastic bushing. It won't stay put. Sucker rolled under the plastic piece that covers the hood release and along the door. Spent more time than the job takes looking on the floor mat, ground, clothes and under vinyl flooring before realizing that is the only place it could be.

I replaced my 99 ranger brake booster and master cylinder. when i got it all back together, brake lights are on all the time. Replaced the non adjustable pedal switch, pretty similar to this. It's making contact all the time. how do i get there to be a gap until i hit the pedal? Can i shorten the rod coming from the booster somehow?

    • @majikmiles9827
      @majikmiles9827 Pƙed 2 lety

for anyone having this problem in the future.... i figured out a fix. the thickness of the new linkage arm coming from the booster was just a shade too thick. so when assembled it was pressing the button without the pedal being pressed. so i had to shave down the thickness of the switch end of the booster linkage arm. that allowed it to be assembled without pressing the button. what a relief. i was stumped for a good while.

I have a 2002 Ford Explorer xlt, had ( have ) a problem were the left rear brake like ( Running ) light wasn't working properly all the time. I tried a tiny flat head screw driver and sand paper trick to clean out the connector and broke off one of the metal socket clips though it did work for the time being, then it went out again after a while. I tried a small tin piece of foil for connection and now none of my brake lights (Running) lights work except head lights and turn signals. Could I have maybe shorted out the brake light (switch) connector or perhaps also a fuse?

*_CRITICAL STEP_* YOU MUST ALIGN IT ONE WAY OR NO WAY.
Additional tip about this simple electric on off switch.
That black plastic hat like cover is placed in the post stem, with the flared brim flush against the brake arm that extends about 3/4 of the brake arm.
The open loop will press against the top if the black hat acting like a spacer so that the switch isnt up against the brake arm. The cotter pin went on using a small vice grip to push it in all the way down flush and to the loop the vice grip is pinching, snapping into place and assuring it doesn't easily back out. Thus you should not try to force the stem with that hat on through the loops of the switch! Its unecessary and besides its very hard to push that switch all the way down the stem and could tear the hat.
When reinstalling the switch be sure the two loop metal end point of the switch points at the vac booster and the wire harness points away towards the driver. In this way the switch body length wise it is pointing the same direction as the the brake rod and parallel to it, that extends from the vac booster.
You can see why this is a one way because of the flattened squared area of the brake arm that will push down against the floating rectangular metal plate in the middle of the switch, so that it makes contact when the brake is depressed as the spring compresses. That little open space that creates a T like top no wider than then a single spring loop metal that coils closes, making the floating inch long rectangular platform press against the metal case.
Now, within that base at the other end of the spring coil is two thin metal electric contact tips. One is soldered on both ends. The other points away from the contact but soldered at its other end. So the brake compression forces that rectangle at the other end down and allows the electric circuit to close and power to flow into the brake lights. You cant see those metal contacts unless you fully expose them by prying open outwards the switch to release the spring and rectangle.
Note if you took a finger length wire stripped just a 1/8 inch on each end, holding the unattached wire harness, and placed one end in one socket and the other in the other socket, + & -, any order, creating a bypass, the brake lights should come on.
It doesn't matter if the switch harness mated comboo is mounted or not for the switch to work, by the way, if you are simply testing the switch by compressing the spring to make the light come on.
Thus there is constant 12 V power to the harness. Whatsmore, the vac booster has no wired power to create the brake light circuit nor does pressing the brake directly effect the circuit.
It's extremely elegant and simple such that a complex mind cant intuitively figure it out at once. Physically compressing that switch closes an electric loop. A slight inch long edge on the brake rod presses.
This comment should be very helpful to this otherwise helpful video. The host told us to keep the position the same but clarity about what specific position to use and its relation to that squared metal molding would facilitate the job and explain the mechanism.
Knowing the electric contact points is key if you want to know the mechanism and sand or file lightly the oxidized contacts.
It's a bitch to carefully pull the whole switch apart to service all contacts but straight forward if you take pics after each part removed. Dont crack the plastic as you pry open the metal prongs holding it together.
In my opinion, if you install it the ONE WAY, its should work .
I dont think sanding the floating rectangle is necessary. There are plastic pin like retainer seats on each end of the spring.
I misplaced the half of the cotter pin cover but leaving that cover off didn't effect lightning brakes, but kicking and breaking or disengaging that cotter pin could create an unpleasant fail.

I have an 2004 F150 and only the driver side brake lights are working, both braking and turn signals. I replaced the passenger side brake bulb, and it didn't fix it. Then i replaced the fuse on #36, still didn't fix it. I'm left without a clue. Will this switch fix cause only 1 side to stop functioning, or would it be both? Thanks

question sir, I have a 2004 Chevy suburban, and my brake lights stayed on which in part drained my battery. my daughter thought it was my alarm going off, being that it's sensitive... when I came out the next morning my truck wouldn't start nor could I get the doors to open via alarm... I'm going to get the alarm serviced, but do you think it went dead due to brake light switch staying on all night. I have to walk back and check to make sure they're not stuck and if it is I usually tap the brake pedal until it goes off... thanks I'll wait for your reply

Hi Thomas, I had a very similar problem, my battery started to fail when I start the engine, and one night I neighbor knock at my door to tell me that the lights were turned on my explorer, I noticed those were only the brake lights, I started to check the lights every time I stopped anywhere and several times they stayed on, I needed to pull the brake pedal to turn them off, so those lights were draining the battery, today I pulled off the brake light switch until I find the replacement.
