At one time from 1983 to 1995, swissair was in the front line and spotlight of commercial aviation in the world. The exquisite and very rare Boeing 747-300 was pretty much custom made for swissair. Around 1980, swissair was very popular and was operating the 747-100, which was a step back from the 747-200. Most airlines at the time that had a 747, had a -200 model, and swissair wanted a better roomier 747 than to aquire the -200. So they asked Boeing to make them a new jumbo jet, and Boeing developed the -300 model with a double the length stretched upper deck and two big emergency doors in the middle. It also had a slightly more advanced flight deck than the 747-200. So in 1983 swissair became the KING of the SKIES with their brand new 747-300, (For it was the A380 of the 1980's). Only a couple other airlines later on had the -300. In 1995, the newest version of the 747, the "400", surpassed the -300 and swissair's reign came to an end. 1995 was also a breakthrough year for airliners all over with the introduction of the Airbus A340 and Boeing 777. swissair lived from 1931 to 2002 and will be greatly missed. I flew many times.. with SR126 /127 BOS I flew it on my way to US for summer camps, I flew from Linate with the A310; in the 80s Economy was on the upper deck so I was always there. and SR120 121 Atlanta in the 90s... The engine noise during climb brings me back to good times.

Right you are. The greatest mistake in operating airliners was to remove the flight engeneer. Many airline crashes were due to this fact. "Safety first" was replaced by "money first."

I’ve flown in a number of 3-crew airplanes, both in engineer seat and pilot seat. I noticed mistakes when riding at the panel and have mistakes called out when in the other seats. You’re right, it’s all about money.

Request permission to suggest? Listen to “Kiss Me” by Sixpence Nonethericher whilevthis Video is playing. The reason I say this is because,I feel that it’s a good tune to listen to whilst watching this video.
