- The Pima Air & Space Museum is an 80-acre museum out in the desert of Arizona that features about 400 various planes, helicopters, and other aircraft from various historic periods. From WWII aircraft to more modern military fighter jets, and even some spacecraft... this place has it all!
Today's video is a little different as we visit the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona for the first time. Despite seeing the sun reflecting off the airplanes in the distance from I-10, we've somehow never made it out here in all our years out here. What a mistake that was!
Some of the more interesting pieces include the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber from World War II, Boeing B-29 Superfortress, B-24 Liberator, an SR-71 Blackbird, two Air Force One planes from different periods (one of which, the Douglas VC-118A, served as the official Air Force One by President Kennedy and President Johnson). There's even a replica of the 1903 Flyer the Wright Brothers flew!

also a few things.
6:36 is a Martin PBM Mariner, a large maritime patrol bomber used by the US Navy. Mariners saw combat in both the Atlantic and Pacific during WWII. They were also built in my home state, the Glenn L. Martin company was in Middle River, MD, both the main plant and sea plane ramps still remain intact.
9:32 not really a correction, just a fun fact. TWA was the first airline to fly the Lockheed Constellation. Howard Hughes himself had a major hand in its design.
20:34 isn't a Nazi aircraft, though it was built in Germany. it's a Focke-Wulf FW44 built for the Finnish Air Force in 1940. the Swastika in this sense didn't refer to the Nazi Party, Finland had used that marking since 1918 and is directly based on the Eurasian symbol. the main difference is how it's depicted. Finnish swastikas were oriented in the "proper" 90 degrees, while Nazi versions are "crooked" at 45 degrees.
21:40 isn't a fighter, it's a Kamikaze. it's a Nakajima Ki-115 "Sabre", one of several purpose designed kamikaze weapons developed in 1945. the Sabre was one such design intended for mass production in anticipation of an allied invasion. the invasion never happened however, so none were used in combat. of the 105 Sabres made, only two survive.
We toured this place shortly after we moved to Sierra Vista, AZ in 2005. Passed by the exit last week and said, "We gotta go back there to see the F-117, the newest acquisition." And then we find your super-excellent video chock full of all the aircraft we didn't see so many years ago. Thanks to you, we have a date on our Dec. calendar to go, learn & enjoy.

@@CactusAtlas We did it! Went to Pima Air yesterday and was agog at all the new additions since our last visit. So impressed by what saw, but didn't have time to see it all. Bought a 2nd day ticket which is valid for six months. Thanks again for your great video.

Very nice video of the Pima Air & Space Museum. Never been there myself, but hope to make it out there someday. So glad they have their four engine heavy bombers of WWII; Boeing B17G Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24J Liberator, and the Boeing B-29 Superfortress indoors protected from the elements. My father was in the USAAF during WWII and he was an instructor pilot in B-17 Flying Fortresses, B-24 Liberators and Martin B-26 Marauders when he was stationed at MacDill Field in Tampa, Florida in 1944. He went on and became a B-29 Superfortress pilot in June of 1945. He missed flying the Superfortress in the Pacific Theater of Operations by only two weeks because the war with Japan had ended. He transferred to the US Army Air Force Reserves shortly afterwards where he flew several times to England and flew B-17's, B-24's and Martin B-26 Marauders back to the United States where they were placed in storage awaiting their fate. He flew a bunch of Martin B-26 Marauders out to Arizona where sadly they were quickly scrapped and turned into aluminum ingots. He stayed in the Reserves flying the Superfortress until 1956 when he transitioned to flying the Boeing B-52B Stratofortress as a co-pilot and he retired from the USAF Reserves in 1957.
I went there in Feb this year. A bucker list moment. SR-71 ...seen them take off on Kadena Okinawa for 18 months. Thanks for showing it.

That's a great museum. I personally flew the exact plane that briefly comes into the frame in the background after about 10:05: (the C-172). When I last visited the museum I recognized the tail number and couldn't believe it. I had to later check an old logbook and yep, same tail number - same paint job even. It had been over 30 years.

I've been there in 2008 and have some pictures of I'll Be Around, my favorite. If you are interested, the Commemorative Air Force Arizona is at Falcon Field in East Mesa, Greenfield and McKellips. They have a small museum there also. It's the home of Sentimental Journey B17, Made in the Shade B25 and a C-47 cargo plane and other planes. Now, they are out with planes on their summer tour. They do give rides on the planes too. Thanks for the tour.

When you first walked in it's not commercial but regular General Aviation because I saw a home built airplane and a Beech Bananza with the V shaped tail plus a Beech 18 twin engine with a twin tail

Neat video, I went there I was younger. Another good place to visit in Tucson is Colossal Caves. There is also the Sonoran Botanical Desert Gardens.
I believe we went to Colassal Cave ages ago (before starting our channel). Would be fun to go back and film! We've been to and filmed at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum twice, however, have not been to Tucson's Bontanical Garden. We will have to check it out! 😄
Interesting- we also had a TWA crash in our Sandia Mountains. Maybe one of these days I’ll try to hike there- this is a great museum!!
Funny you say that. I might be going up to Prescott AZ to hike the site of the crash I referred to in the video this weekend. I have not heard of the crash you mentioned. I love destination hikes like that, although the stories can be sad.

Thank you very much for the tour, which I enjoyed thoroughly. Regarding the particular smell you sensed around the aircraft, that's most likely from the primer paint on the aluminum structure and skin of the planes. Over time, various other oils mix with that odor, such as hydraulic fluid, fuel, exhaust gases, etc. I speak as a humble aircraft mechanic and private pilot.

Lots of planes from different eras. What a treasure that they still exist in this world to see and what a wonder they are all in one place. Enjoyed seeing all the planes. Did they have a plane like the Lindbergh plane that is in St. Louis airport? Also do you remember the shuttle coming through St. Louis?
Oh gosh. Have to say I, myself, do not remember much about the shuttle. Glenn might remember. I had to look up the Lindbergh plane and it looks like its (VERY) long loan of the plane ended and it isn't there any longer! ☹️

The SR-71 Was used for taking pics of Russia. At 80,000 feet at mach 2 could read your name tag. Bought the titanium from Russia. Strange.
Also I know what smell you are talking about! My dad did electronics for the airforce/guard so I normally associate that smell with the electronics specifically. Either way its a super unique smell that doesnt seem to exist anywhere else besides old military planes.
Yeah totally. It reminds me of the smell at the Titan Missile museum, like in the control room. Maybe the degassing of some of the materials?

To be honest, I think if you really want to inspect each plane or most of them, plan on staying 2 or even 3 days. I machined and help build many of the planes that came from McDonnel Aircraft fighter town USA Lambert field St. Louis Mo. from the 60s to the 80s
Oh 100% agree with you. It's impossible to do anything but walk around and get an overview of all the areas in just a day. Both of us actually lived in St Louis in the 80s. 😄

@11:48 that is a Boeing 377SG which is the same aircraft my dad flew for NASA and he flew the Command module Columbia
JET-A is for turban engines and that has like a kerosene smell anything with propeller used 100 octane and that has a unique smell and that was green color today we have 100LL A GAS (LL is low lead) and that is a blue color and that also has a very unique smell
my dream is to go there but i would have to fly 25 hours to arizona :(
