    Love 3D coat, saved my bacon more then once with it's uv tools and retopo ability though these days it's hard to justify the upgrade pricing.. at least for myself as a hobbiest on disability, but that's me personally. I love what I've seen of 21/22's version of 3D coat, it's looking mighty impressive and it's still independent, which is more then the competition can say now.. What gets me with people complaining about the UI.. don't like it.. Customise it, it's ability has been there now for like 10 years.

      I feel the complaints about the UI stem from the fact that the program is as complex as it is powerful. It requires dedication and patience to learn it, but is well worth the effort. The program is actually very streamlined and smart, offering you many functions at your fingertips when needed, instead of you having to search. This can be overwhelming though at first and takes getting used to seeing so many options. Once one becomes more experienced in it and it clicked, it becomes appearent that the UI is actually pretty efficiently layed out for almost any use case. I find it rather fascinating.

    If you hate the UI, get a Razor programmable keypad. Then map all your often used shortcuts. My Razor Tartarus gives 20 keys, 2 buttons, a wheel and a 4 position numpad. I use the 4 position to switch profiles for different rooms. If you think 3DCoat is cluttered, then you have never used Zbrush.

    Love 3d Coat but I would like to see a much better UDIM workflow. It's industry standard and has been around for a long time now. 3DCoat works with uv tiles, but the workflow is limited and restrictive.

      Please send your request to support@Pilgway.com, as UDIM tiles within the application is something I (lower level staff member) have requested, as well as others. The more requests a feature gets, the more urgent the priority it tends to get.

    • @shikhermyv

      @@PILGWAY3DCoat a good solution would be to make UI layer open source. Kind of pluggable UI where users could modify it through code and inject. I am not sure if this would be feasible though.

    • @PILGWAY3DCoat
      @PILGWAY3DCoat  Před 2 lety +3

      @Shikher Pandey ....Agreed, except for the Sculpt Room. This is because Voxels and Dynamic Tessellation are much different platforms than a standard Quad Mesh + Subdivision approach. This is why Subdivisions and Sculpt Layers get broken in ZBrush the second you use Dynameshes or Sculptris Pro in ZBrush.
      As a lower level staffer, I have suggested your request to Andrew multiple times, but it is a very large task. Perhaps if you and others make this request known to him (support@Pilgway.com), it will make the high priority list.

    Unfortunately the UI for this program is still way too cluttered, you really need to hire a UX designer. That smart material editor has WAY too much buttons and text for anyone to learn, you'd need to buy a precision mouse just to navigate it.

    • @Zeriel00
      @Zeriel00 Před 2 lety +4

      Exactly this, when other programs are going stream lined and organized, 3D Coat is just a mess to find anything. Even Zbrush that people think is a nightmare, can be customized with your own pop up menu and hide the entire interface. This is just a mess to navigate.

      The old default layout may have seemed cluttered, because it put the most commonly used asset panels in the right column, for easy access...but the user has always been able to customize the layout to their liking. A new, more simplified layout has been made the default, removing most asset panels from the UI, as the content in the asset panels can be accessed in the Activity Bar (upper right corner). There is also a Minimalist Layout accessed with a single hotkey (TAB)...with nothing in the viewport, but the Tool Options panel in the upper right, and it is collapsed much of the time.
      The Minimalist is as uncluttered as any app could be and users can make the layout as simple or complex as they wish.

    • @piorism

      @@PILGWAY3DCoat Hello - while the app is great features-wise and the clutter can be adressed to an extent, there is still some very weird stuff going on with the way the menus behave causing a lot of missed clicks and frustration. At least it is the case with the versions I use (4.5 and 4.9). I don't know if it has been adressed since then though.
      Also in terms of UX there are things that really could be improved, for instance the very convoluted way to enable symmetry on X which requires 3 unintuitive steps while Blender and Zbrush just do it at the press of a single button/shortcut. To users who've always/only used 3d coat it wont seem like much, but for people coming from other apps it feels very busy/cluttered intdeed.

  • @Zeriel00
    @Zeriel00 Před 2 lety +3

    I used to use this program for Retopology and UV mapping. The problem with this program is that the UI is just too unintuitive and doesn't make things easier. Why would anyone pay for this when Blender can do everything 3D Coat can for free and more? I don't mean to insult you, 3D Coat is a great program, but it's a jack of all trades, master of none that doesn't really fit anywhere right now.

    • @dnashj33
      @dnashj33 Před 2 lety +7

      That's not true at all. Blender does SOME of the things 3DCoat does, but not at the level 3DCoat does. It has nowhere near the scope of tools and brushes 3DCoat has, just for sculpting, let alone for texture painting. And as for Retopo, sure there are some addons one could use, but when compared to the full scope of Retopo tools 3DCoat has and the fact that you can go back and sculpt some more, while having 3DCoat conform the Retopo mesh to the sculpt on the fly, there is no comparison. The Auto-Retopo engine is far superior to anything in Blender.

      And how is Blender not a "Jack of all trades" as well? Even more so than 3D Coat. Less experienced people should stop bashing 3D Coat just because it has a learning curve and not evetything is spoonfed to you in a few hours via gazzilions of tutorials. Those exist only for Blender because its free. 3D Coat is incredibly powerful when you know your shidd and give yourself some time to learn it properly. It is complex and has its own paradigms to learn. Dont bash something publicly jus cause YOU have problems with it. You should be able to state the exact technical aspects of your problems instaed of making broad negative generalizations. The devs work hard on this, the frequency of updates and enhanceemts for such a small team is incredible. You cause these people harm and mislead people who might wanna try get into 3D Coat by tosssing out your negative oppinion as broad undefined generalizations. This tool has its very unique purpose. And is far more powerful than blender in countless aspects. Pretty brave to say that this tool doesnt fit anywhere. Jus look around what is being done with it. Look up Jama Jubarev latest sculpts, the endless army of concept and production artists who use 3d coat in their pipeline... and you will see thats bogus.

      Blender is very capable, i use it for decades. But in Detail, 3dcoat has awesome UV, Retopo and PBR Painting tools, while Blender has nothing nearly capable. You can go much much higher in the density and detail with your meshes. At the end of the day, it hardly depends on what artwork you produce and of course what interface and logic behind suits you best. A good artist can use several tools to get his vision out.

      The UI has had a lot of work done on it and it is patterned after Photoshop, so why all the criticism? If you don't like the layout, you can easily change it to suit you, or you can work in a completely minimalist/simple UI

      After reading Don's comment I went back to 3D Coat with a focus on customizing the UI to my needs. I agree it is impressively customizable and I now have a much more streamlined interface for my work. Pretty cool. I will say, however, that I think new users first impression might be that it's a little cluttered, and perhaps the default layouts should be streamlined. For instance, there's some redundancy in panels that are open, plus accessible via the hover menu in the upper right. It looks overwhelming to new users I think.
