    Ever since I was a little kid I akways found these underwater structures scary. Unnatural man made objects just forgotten in the abyss, like this rig that reminds me of a giant metal spider web. I find it creepy but would love to dive there!

      I aways found submerged structures to be fascinating, there is something about its aesthetics that always gives me an unique feeling and piques my interest. It's a similar feeling as when im appreciating a piece of art

      @@jacobkudrowich dude I literally had this same conversation with a friend a while back and made the same word, submechanomegalophobia. Another thing that fucks me up is imagining falling from a cruise ship, then swimming next to it and seeing the bottom underwater.........god I hate it lol

      We do. We sink old ships and stuff all the time to create artificial reefs like this one

      That’s exactly what we do. However this is an ultra inefficient way of 1. spending our highly refined resources such as steel and 2. creating a sufficient amount of reefs way world wide.

      STRANGER WOOMY’S - Me too, and the darker the water, the more phobic my reaction. Strange too, because I grew up on Chickamauga Lake, swimming almost every single day during my summers as a kid. The older I got, the more phobic I became and now that I’m 47, I will not, I cannot, swim in anything but a pool.

    Fantastic photography, so clear and high res makes you feel like you're right there underwater. Also great to know these platforms server a beneficial purpose for marine life. I agree they should be left where they are, perhaps removing the upper portion and leaving the lower as an artificial reef (with warning buoys on top of course).

    i just found this video. I lived on High Island on one of Mobil Oil's platforms in the mid 90s for part of a summer and was explaining to someone how they form artificial reefs. Thanks for this video. I never got to see High Island from this vantage point.

    It is like a city. many different fish living as you said in a high rise apartment building. The color of the city looks like Christmas time at the rig. Thanks for not pointing your camera down on these rigs. It would be like looking at a black hole of the unknown. Pipes disappearing into blackness. Fear of thee unknown. Down, Down never to return. Thanks again for an adventure that never quits.

    A lot of people are afraid of this stuff, especially with the new videos coming out with pictures describing different phobias they weren't even aware of having. And I understand that, there's nothing wrong with being afraid. But for me? I find this stuff fascinating. I would love to explore something like this one day.

    Normally it saddens me to see humans that appear to invade the ocean with oil rigs. In this case knowing that in the end that these rigs support such beautiful reefs makes me really happy. It's like for once humans didn't screw this up too bad.

      Professional Commenter i study ocean engineering, don't worry they won't build something that would affect the ocean ecosystem too much. I don't what it's called in english but there's a lot regulation regarding enviromental impact for rigs

    it would be incredibly interesting to see how the makeup of the ecological communities attached to the support beams changes with depth: a gradient of life from the surface to the ocean floor.

      My theory is that there would be more life near the top, less towards the middle, and then more again at the bottom as a result of waste from animals at the top settling down and providing a source of nutrients for deep sea animals.
