Ever since I was a little kid I akways found these underwater structures scary. Unnatural man made objects just forgotten in the abyss, like this rig that reminds me of a giant metal spider web. I find it creepy but would love to dive there!
That’s a fear called submechanophobia. The fear of partially or fully submerged man made objects in the water. Pretty cool sub on Reddit if ur interested.
@@Edgehead991 thank you for this
@@Edgehead991 wow, thanks.
Fr
I aways found submerged structures to be fascinating, there is something about its aesthetics that always gives me an unique feeling and piques my interest. It's a similar feeling as when im appreciating a piece of art
i have a fear of seeing large things under water so imagining looking under to see all the beams disappear into the darkness is what’s got me tweakin
It's called Submechanophobia
@@NoNeedForLungs i propose a combo word,
"submechanomegalophobia"
For the specific fear of large submerged manmade objects. I think it is distinct enough to include because i have it
nah he tweakin
@@jacobkudrowich dude I literally had this same conversation with a friend a while back and made the same word, submechanomegalophobia. Another thing that fucks me up is imagining falling from a cruise ship, then swimming next to it and seeing the bottom underwater.........god I hate it lol
@@JugsKise just thinking about that scenario sends shivers down my spine. Im glad someone else relates! Or falling off a ship and landing by the giant submerged propeller and getting pulled into
I cry when I see those sweet little fish swim around....it just makes this old man sob with joy.
Swimming around with so much joy and happyness and no worrys
Yea lol it makes him happy
You have a good soul sir!
Well if coral grows this easily on these rigs can't we make more structures to boost the amount of reefs?
We do. We sink old ships and stuff all the time to create artificial reefs like this one
this structure will soon crumble and everything you see will die off
aboomination soon is quite relative. It will take 1000s of years
That’s exactly what we do. However this is an ultra inefficient way of 1. spending our highly refined resources such as steel and 2. creating a sufficient amount of reefs way world wide.
That’s why they sink some boats on purpose but yes I agree with making other structures
If I can’t see the bottom I freak out
STRANGER WOOMY’S yeah that’s something I’ve been working on for a while. It’s quite scary ain’t it
That's called Thalassophobia
STRANGER WOOMY’S - Me too, and the darker the water, the more phobic my reaction. Strange too, because I grew up on Chickamauga Lake, swimming almost every single day during my summers as a kid. The older I got, the more phobic I became and now that I’m 47, I will not, I cannot, swim in anything but a pool.
@@lorchid23 damm dude same here... i think its our conscience speaking
@@joaopereira3702 well, in murky waters many of our ancestors met an early end due to crocs etc.
How is this guy not on national geographic
he is !!!
Sadly, not. But on TV! Seriously though, we are really trying to become a killer CZcams show so tell some friends!!
National Geographic is a complete joke!! They've been pushing some progressive BS for some time and now their worst and last one was the gender revolution. Jonathan can get fame with an alternative way without that degenerate of a magazine organization's help

7:33 Out of context quote: conservationists love oil platforms.
When they are no longer pumping oil: yes. Because they are reefs that are no danger to the environment.
@@BlueWorldTV Yeah I was just having fun with irony. Its nice that they let the decommissioned one stay. Is there any worry that these will collapse one day due to age and destroy the communities they have created? Are there any efforts being made to preserve/repair these structures?
@@BlueWorldTV be on a documentary channel
Well hello there...submechaphobia and Thalassaphobia! Nice to see you again!
same here
Same
buoys, jetties, piers, and these awful rigs
Lîbbÿ Malone sameee
Submechanophobia brought me here
That’s terrifying. I would have straight up passed out.
Me to, hearthstrike
Its the music that calms me down
EXACTLY
Ah, the only thing we have accidentally did to benefit the ocean life. Truly spectacular :)

Marine Life: “its free real estate”
Yesterday I went scuba diving for the first time and you were the one who made me want to go scuba diving 😀👍👍👍👍👍👍
Awesome!
I hope you have a wide range of diving experiences since your original post 7 years ago!! 🎉
An extra hearty thumbs up today for including the word "festooned" in an entirely appropriate manner.
LOL!
the life on those oil rigs was not only amazing but beautiful! Its amazing how nature can create beauty almost anywhere, even on an oil platform.
2:56 so much for the ladder
Ladders are almost never used when a diver is entering the water.
You use the ladder to get out
4:03 And then the fish nation attacked.
Underated comment lmao
Now that is beautiful. I was expecting maybe several species of animals and weeds to be growing here and there on the structure, I wasn't expecting it to be almost 100% covered, that's amazing.
its so satisfying when nature takes something back
Mesmerizing and magnificent! I love to see that nature makes its best to take advantage of, and adapts to, what there is available on the spot.
Fantastic footage, Jonathan and Team.
Thanks for the video, mates.
What's up Mark!!? Good to see you!
I absolutely LOVE Johnathan Bird's programs. It makes me happy to see the BLUE WORLD

Best show on the internet truly a diamond in the rough, keep up the good work😀🦈🐠🐟🐡🦑🦀🐋
Fantastic photography, so clear and high res makes you feel like you're right there underwater. Also great to know these platforms server a beneficial purpose for marine life. I agree they should be left where they are, perhaps removing the upper portion and leaving the lower as an artificial reef (with warning buoys on top of course).
This is still one of my favorites to rewatch!
Been wanting to dive an oil platform ever since I read, 'Hell Divers Rodeo'. Thank for another great video Mr. Bird
i just found this video. I lived on High Island on one of Mobil Oil's platforms in the mid 90s for part of a summer and was explaining to someone how they form artificial reefs. Thanks for this video. I never got to see High Island from this vantage point.
love your videos. always excited when I see your new videos on my recommended list
Now I know what's under the oil platforms, thanks Jonathan
3:34 It looks like the City of the fishes
5:15 the diver just appearing like that instantly made me think of that one scene in finding Nemo lmao
Thank you for another amazing video Jonathan! It was really nice meeting you at the Our World Underwater Film Festival on Jan. 28th in Dallas. Thanks again for signing my hat and reg case. Joel and I are going to definitely check out this dive and the Flower Gardens sometime soon. I showed my sister and nephews your videos and they really enjoyed them. Keep up the wonderful work! Joel and I hope to see you again soon! :) - Ashley
I watched this on 720p(max on my phone) and its really soothing 😍😍😍
Absolutely beautiful sights! Thank you for sharing sir.
80 years ago plus 2years thats 82 years
@@TreyBeam hahah
It is like a city. many different fish living as you said in a high rise apartment building. The color of the city looks like Christmas time at the rig. Thanks for not pointing your camera down on these rigs. It would be like looking at a black hole of the unknown. Pipes disappearing into blackness. Fear of thee unknown. Down, Down never to return. Thanks again for an adventure that never quits.
Shut up shut up SHUT UP
@@Channeloflife123 sorry?

Old oil rig: exists Fish and corals: it‘s free real estate
I hope you got to show this to the guys working on the platform. That would blow their minds!
A lot of people are afraid of this stuff, especially with the new videos coming out with pictures describing different phobias they weren't even aware of having. And I understand that, there's nothing wrong with being afraid. But for me? I find this stuff fascinating. I would love to explore something like this one day.
It's like swimming around a big jungle gym!
Very cool!!! Thanks for sharing some shots towards the end that are pointed down. I still would have liked to see more like that, showing the supports disappearing into the depths. Creepy!
My favorite dive was in Phuket Thailand Shark point..... Absolutely Beautiful water & tons of marine life to see.
Highly reccommended .
There's a lot of learnings in every video❤️
arent you afraid to drop your camera into the blue void? or is it tied to you?
I hold on to that puppy TIGHT!
@@BlueWorldTV have you ever dropped it?
I could barely breath watching this
So amazing, love your videos and how toy show sharks and other animals aren't mean and bad creatures.
I love your videos, Jonathan, and this one in particular. I still hope one day soon you'll make it to the African Great Lakes :-)
Awesome episode!!! Your show is my most favorite of all time! I told all my friends at school about your channel and they loved it!
Thanks for spreading the word!!!
This video is so amazing thankyou for showing us the amazing parts of our ocean ❤😄🐟🐟🐬🐳🐋
Amazing. The sheer beauty!
Jonathan your work is great. If i could have option to like your videos hundreds of times i would have done it.
After watching this video I went to oil platform and dive. when the water is clear California rig is absolutely amazing.
your video is so educating and so beautiful to watch... Good job sir Jonathan..
increnable its must be a great divi!! this video is very good and i enjoyed him very much
It's so much relaxing...
Interesting video :)
such great resolution!
Jonathan, I just found your videos! My husband and I really enjoy them. I love learning more about the blue world.
Thanks for watching!!
Haha thanks for posting! They're ridiculously addicting. ^_^ I like this video because it puts a positive spin on something normally depressing... it's nice to hear of times when ocean life is actually flourishing.
That's actually incredible
3:36 I thought these dark green small fish on the bottom left were squids lol
What an eye opener
Normally it saddens me to see humans that appear to invade the ocean with oil rigs. In this case knowing that in the end that these rigs support such beautiful reefs makes me really happy. It's like for once humans didn't screw this up too bad.
Professional Commenter i study ocean engineering, don't worry they won't build something that would affect the ocean ecosystem too much. I don't what it's called in english but there's a lot regulation regarding enviromental impact for rigs
Two different worlds and forms of life in one planet.👍
Another great video! Keep up the great work!
I love all these positive comments
Jonathan I've been watching your vids for a very long time but know I'm a CZcamsr and I can finally subscribe and like!
Im imagining a 30 foot great lurking from those cold iron reinforcement

Outstanding!
I love the narration
This is so awesome 😃😃😃😃
I'm now taking Petroleum Engineering in University. Thank you for giving me one more positive thing of oil platform.
Jonathan Bird keep up the good work. You are the best at your job. :p
it would be incredibly interesting to see how the makeup of the ecological communities attached to the support beams changes with depth: a gradient of life from the surface to the ocean floor.
My theory is that there would be more life near the top, less towards the middle, and then more again at the bottom as a result of waste from animals at the top settling down and providing a source of nutrients for deep sea animals.
Your voice is very soothing and content is relaxing ...thank you blue world
😊 thank you
Very educational video!
back at it again with a new video!!
John, you should do a video with Ocean Ramsey. That chick free dives with great whites. That'd be a sweet video :)
