I’ve just returned from the Himalayas in Nepal….I was there to attempt a summit of Island Peak @ 20,000ft, only to fall short @ 16,000ft due to AMS acute mountain sickness. Nepal is an incredible place, from the city of Kathmandu all the way into the Himalayas. IN THE WORDS OF ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER…..ILL BE BACK ⏰🙏⛰

Two months before your trip I completed the Manaslu circuit. It is a strenuous trek covering over a hundred miles in remote and difficult terrain. You get to see far more varied landscapes than a 'there and back' hike up to a mountain base camp, or the summit as you bravely attempted. The highest point was the Larkya La pass, at 16,752 feet. I felt no discomfort or breathing difficulties whatsoever at that altitude. If you got AMS at that height I would suggest you needed a longer period of acclimatization or you are simply not physically suited to go higher. Know your limits. I would strongly recommend a circuit trek with several days to hike to a pass at a higher level than where you failed... Annapurna and Manaslu both fit that criteria; both are spectacular, though the first is too busy for my tastes. Good luck.
