      Belisarius we’re definitely been trying to make these videos somewhat helpful for intermediate and expert players as well; and it’s always good to have a refresher!

      The inside turn, using the range ruler, and probably the biggest new thing I learned was obstruction blocks engagement for squadrons. That blew my mind.

    You can use the movement tool to measure at any time during your movement phase, you don’t have to commit to the move as long as you don’t click it on the base. ~roughly quoted from the European space boat king!

    • @motf7552
      @motf7552  Před 6 lety +2

      All due respect to Ben the European space boat king, but are you sure you have that quote accurate? I doubt that he’s unaware of the fact that you most certainly cannot use the movement tool to measure at any time.
      Page 9, of the Rules Reference Guide, under Premeasuring (emphasis mine):
      ‘-Players can measure with either side of the RANGE RULER at any time.
      -The MANEUVER TOOL can be placed and adjusted freely during the “DETERMINE COURSE” STEP OF EXECUTING A MANEUVER to assist in determining a course. A ship is not committed to a course until the guides of the maneuver are tool inserted into the ship’s base.’
      EDIT: Ah I see, your edited version - yes that’s correct.

    Thanks for this video. Loving your stuff by the way. This "obstruction blocks engagement" is a huge game changer for me. Looked it up to be sure and you are so right! It's not in the Rule book!!!! It's in the Rules REFERENCE under engagement! It's how I missed it...
    I was in a tournament... Hid a bomber or two in an asteroid to save damage... and then realized he engaged me and permalocked me and I could do no damage to him (Because my pool was only 1 black, lost due to obstruction). I assumed from that point on, that terrain against bombers is just permalock engagement waiting to happen... We played it wrong!!!
    Had I known this... Asteroids are perfect bombing strike points... not bomber deathlock traps...
    Thanks for the heads up.

    Obsctruction blocks engagement? That's much more flavorful than inside turn nonsense. I like it because its like you're hiding your fighters in an asteroid field.
    See this is what happens when you're the only player at your local game store and your freeloading friends just use your ships. You go a year or more without knowing these rules and everyone else has been playing wrong because of it. Oh well they should have bought their own ships and watched these helpful videos.

    I have to say one of my favorite things to do is roll my dice, concentrate fire token, dual turbolaser turrents. That way you get to if you roll a blank you can still get another dice. And remember that turbolaser turrents you can remove any dice not just a red. I had a guy mad that I removed a blank black for a double causing him to die

    • @motf7552
      @motf7552  Před 6 lety

      Concentrate Fire Token and Dual Turbolaser Turrets are both re-roll effects so the formula holds true, albiet Dual Turbolaser Turrets is a round about way of getting a better re-roll! (sort of)
      In your example (assuming front arc of an Arquittens Light Cruiser), i would have used the Concentrate Fire Token first to reroll the blank black in hopes of getting a Hit/Crit and then used Dual Turbolaser Turrets (assuming no other possible attacks) to fish for an Accuracy or Double and then remove the Red Dice after.
      This would give you the optimal result of either 4 damage with a critical or 2 damage with and Accuracy and a critical vs your 3 dmg.
      Hope that helps!

      Kevin Fretz you can add a black! Concentrate Fire allows you to add a die of any colour already in the pool, so once you get it in the pool with Sato then you’re good.

    I don't understand the brace bracket thing. What does odd numbers have to do with anything?

    • @motf7552
      @motf7552  Před 3 lety +1

      So basically if you go look at the rules for Brace it reduces the damage by half rounded up. If you Brace 2 damage it halves to 1. If you Brace 3 damage it halves to 1.5 which then rounds up to 2. This creates what we mean by ‘Brace Brackets’ where effectively every higher odd number pushes the end damage higher (5 braces to 3, 7 braces to 4 and so on).
      This can be important when considering re-rolls and other cards / means of improving your result. Say you’re the attacker, if you currently have 3 damage, but the best a re-roll could give you is 4, unless you’re trying to acquire some other result for a specific purpose (i.e. a Critical or an Accuracy) then this is probably not worth it assuming your opponent has a Brace.
      Hope that helps explain!

    First and foremost, before you do *anything* - GO LOOK AT YOUR OPPONENT'S LIST. The biggest mistake I see newer players make is they don't know what they're going against until you blind-side them with key stuff later in the game. It will effect every decision you make, especially pre-deployment decisions like initiative, objectives and naturally, deployments.
    Understanding what their key components are in their list is integral to success before anything even touches the play area.
    And a tip for all you teachers out there - let your newbies make mistakes and teach them *after*. Don't correct them mid-game. Mistakes help people learn.
    Now, go read Sun Tzu's Art of War.

    Double arc on one side from 2 side of your ship doesn't exist. It's 1 to 1. From the yellow point of your side to the yellow point of the ennemy side. And you can't cross the infinity line of your arc. But you can attaque 2 side of the same ship with 2 side of your ship.

    • @motf7552
      @motf7552  Před 5 lety +1

      Incorrect. Under Line Of Sight, second last point, page 7 of the Rules Reference Guide it states "the attacker's hullzone does not block line of sight".
      Therefore double arc is possible and a very much fundamental part of the game.

  • @SimonEBurgess

    At 2:26, when you temporarily reduce the speed, how come you can overlap the tool? Quoting the RRG, page 8 under "overlapping": "If a ship executes a maneuver and its final position
    would overlap another ship, it cannot finish its maneuver
    normally. Instead, temporarily reduce its speed by one
    (without changing the speed dial) and move the ship at the
    new speed. This process continues until the ship can finish
    its maneuver, even if that maneuver is to remain in place
    at speed “0.” ..."
    This indicates to me that the measurement tool could indeed be changed to a legal configuration ("reduce its speed by one ... and move the ship at the
    new speed"). Nothing in the rules say that you cannot, or should not, change the measurement tool when reducing the speed. Nor do I see an exception that this move can overlap the measurement tool. Just referencing a normal move at slower speed.
    Is this in a FAQ? Read as written, it looks illegal to me.
    Cheers and thanks for the content.

    • @motf7552
      @motf7552  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey mate!
      Sorry to take so long to get back to you.
      By the sounds of it you're misinterpreting the RRG. When you temporarily reduce your speed it does not allow you to change the maneuver tool (in fact this would be a little broken to be honest).
      If you look at the example shown on Page 18 of the Learn to Play it shows an example of this, basically you're just temporarily reducing your speed, checking if the maneuver at the lower speed (without changing the tool) allows you to physically place the model and if it does moving to that speed (checking each lower speed if it doesn't).
      This is supported by the fact that if you read the Overlapping section on Page 8 of the RRG fully (third dot point in that section) you'll notice that it says, and I quote, "If a ship must execute a maneuver at a reduced speed due to overlapping another ship, it is allowed to overlap the maneuver tool in its final position".
      If you were allowed to change the yaw of the tool as you suggest this point wouldn't make much sense. Also helpfully shows the exception I'm referring to.
      Cheers!
