    I think the way to approach sexualizing characters in games is to have it work in harmony with the character being sexualized. Bayonetta is probably one of the most overtly sexualized female characters in video games, and nobody has a problem with it because she knows it and she absolutely loves it. She's in control of her own hypersexuality the entire time, and there's never a point where that's taken away from her, certainly not for the purpose of titillation.

      @jdellabeat6245 Před 2 lety +150

      I think Duke Nukem's portrayal of male sexuality is kind off hit-or-miss to me. Like, I never grew up with the character and only reference I have is Duke Nukem Forever's depiction. But, Duke's sex appeal is not entirely inherent to his own actions, like you get NPCs (primarily women, at least in my playthrough of the game) in the games commentating on his presumed sex appeal and masculinity, but you never see or hear of it. Although, my argument is only applicable 'cause Duke Nukem is limited to first person, while Bayonetta gets to flaunt and user her sexuality as a weapon and expression in third person. It also to note that the supporting characters around Bayo don't comment her sexual expression as a way to try to get it on w/ her. Even with Luka, he's attracted to Bayo, but his fruitless attitude and his charm are rooted in cute romanticism and they both have a good rapport w/ each other.
      Like, if Duke were to get a Bayonetta treatment, that'll be interesting. Have him flex his muscles or do bodybuilder-esque poses as a taunt while he holds his guns in creative ways. And don't shy away from it homoerotic, embrace it

    • @nobodyknowsforsure
      @nobodyknowsforsure Před 2 lety +37

      @@jdellabeat6245 a straight guy won't like homoerotic, in short you'd be pandering to a smaller audience while removing a larger one. Usually when you keep it straight, people of the other persuasion are still interested anyway. So it makes more sense business wise to keep him straight.

      I'm not suggesting you change his sexuality at all lol. Like, subtext. Make the character embrace his sexuality in a campy homoerotic-esque portrayal. The reason why Bayonetta is a successful icon is because the game doesn't shy away from her burlesque performance. The reason why it works because the in-universe fiction doesn't bend over backwards to excuse itself for being sexual in an honest and campy way. Sex is camp. I don't know what to tell you.

    Lollipop Chainsaw came out when I was a twelve year old girl and it was my FAVORITE game. I have never been a gamer, especially not of hack-and-slash games, but I played this game for HOURS. I'm so glad that this video was recommended to me because it made me remember how much I adored this game (and Juliet😳). As a woman who's grown up as a raging feminist, I hated games that left its female characters as nothing more than sexual objects and I'm sure my mom was perplexed why I was so obsessed with this game but I think you hit the nail on the head when you pointed out that Juliet is sexy and confident, but it doesn't take away from her personality, individuality, and ability to kick ass! She feels like a fully-fleshed out character because she's dripping with personality. I loved making Barbies face the horrors of war and be badasses and Juliet was an extension of that desire to see the pretty blonde girl be a competent and well-rounded individual rather than just some dumb bimbo. And it didn't hurt that she was nice to look at too.

      @@TheBlackAntagonist Well, representation, especially of marginalized groups, does matter, and its good that many of these complex great characters happen to be of these groups for more variety, representation, and general good vibes and inspiration for said groups. That being said, I also agree, writing, personality, etc comes first, the identity later. Or rather, the identity, if it is first, must be paired with good writing instead of being the only thing about them that the story talks about.

    • @TheBlackAntagonist
      @TheBlackAntagonist Před 2 lety +1

      @@ramenbomberdeluxe4958 I see your point, though I disagree slightly. There were shows all throughout my life with characters "like me" as in black. Some more useless than others but that's besides. For me, I related more to the characters who struggled like me but succeeded regardless.
      Hannah from the movie Wolf Children struggled to raise her kids in a world that would be afraid of them at best and hunt them at worst after losing the love of her life and her childrens' father to a cruel twist of fate.
      She wasn't black or male. Hell, I don't even have kids, but I want to and I related to the idea of protecting those you love and teaching them to navigate a cruel but sometimes beautiful world.
      The idea of the universal struggles is what I'm talking about.

But making the character so that it "represents " woman realistically is ironic. If I model my character looking like Adriana Lima, then it's not unrealistic! At the same time if I make a videogame where all the girls have huge kno knockers I am going to question the motives. But at the same time in my friend group of the five girls there are 4 have large chest.
      I guess in this day and age it doesn't hurt adding girls with big and small. At the same time games are a reflection of the intent of the creators, so I they make a game where all the girls are flat chested who am I to judge?

    The argument about sexiness and its difference from sexism needs to be said more. It shocks me that "slutwalks" were such a recent thing, that they still go on, but the same people who'd been marching in the street for such an event then turn around call characters such as Miss Lollipop Chainsaw as "too sexualised".
    Many Women like being sexy and presenting themselves as such
    Many Men, and women too for that matter, appreciate women doing this.
    If art reflects life, and video games are art, of course we're going to have sexy women characters in video games. There could definitely be an argument for going to far with it, or having too many sexy women characters, but it seems more reasonable to argue in the other direction at the moment.

She’s literally just turned 18 that very day, so that’s where the murkiness of the sexualization is at for me. She was closer to being 17 (underage) and still has that high school mentality, so as a young woman that was just what made me feel kind of funny about it even though I adore Juliet and have ever since I pre-ordered the game when I was 12.

I hope we get more skin in regards to that so men can be “sexually attractive” since you see a LOT of male and female player characters with VAST differences in appearance (similarly we need more male clothing options and I hope we get more diversity in women since there’s a major focus in making them sexually attractive and men don’t have to be). I also will point out that the girl with the orange hair (name escapes me) was very vilified online cuz they looked “masculine” and didn’t smile as much. The remake of that FF game got attacked cuz Tifa’s boobs were more naturally proportioned. It’s still not accepted for women to not look a specific way.

    This was a pretty good video and while I very much agree broadly with the points you were making about sexualization and femininity in media, I think there’s another elephant in the room when it comes to this character specifically. Now forgive me as I haven’t played this game, so I’m unsure of the characters age myself, but I think sexualization gets trickier when a character is underage or uses underage aesthetics. Cheer and school uniforms are overwhelmingly associated with being a high school and so perhaps much of the controversy was over not just the sexualization broadly, but by playing into sexualizing things so closely associated with youth. I do think that sexualization of teens is really gross and is worthy of criticism even if I think sexualization broadly should be encouraged if done ethically. Even if this character is “of age” or whatever I don’t think that cheer or school uniforms are things that should be sexualized. You can definitely still have a sort of bubblegum popstar sexuality thing without delving into those (I love the chainsaw with hearts in it btw). I’m a trans non-binary person and lots of people in my circles love to embrace such an unabashed hyper-feminine camp aesthetic (music by SOPHIE for example) and I definitely find them compelling too although I occupy a more gothic/futuristic sexuality myself. I’d love to see more games exploring trans sexuality/characters too. Lots of nuance in this discussion of feminism, femininity, empowerment, sexism, and sexuality so feel free to reply and continue the conversation lol.

    Sexualization isn't innately positive or negative. It's just something some people might be interested in and some are not, while also affecting the overall tone of the work. It's an issue when it doesn't fit the tone, while being clearly part of the tone means it is a genuine part of the overall vision. People have different tastes, not everything is for every taste. This is a very simple topic, I don't get why some make such a big deal about it. There's media for those who enjoy it and media for those who don't. What a non-issue.

      It’s not as much of a non-issue as you would assume. Sexualized portrayals in media, while fictional, can bleed into people’s mentalities in every day life. Sexualization in fictional media is fine. Sexualization in real life of real people non-consented is not fine.
      In a black and white world, everyone would be able to accept those two things and know when it’s ok and when it’s not. The problem starts when people who consume fictional sexual media begin to walk around in their day to day lives with the same mentality they have while consuming sexual fictional media.
      Checking random strangers out, which is non-consented and inherently wrong, sexism and sexist remarks when someone calls another out for those nonconsensual behaviors. A lot of these things stem from fictional media and certain individuals blurring the lines between fiction and reality. And yes, this is a unisex thing and while being seen more in men is still very much perpetuated by women as well. Not everyone who consumes this media turns out like that at all, but an overwhelming amount do.

      @@DXFromYT Maybe you should make a video about Sexy Female Characters and The Controversies surrounding them.

    Nothing beats when you control a Nick Zombie...and the cheer..."It's alright , it's ok , my man Nick will F your A!"
    That and when Spin you right Round starts playing as you run over zombies with the thresher doing donuts...

    The cheerleader and the game Lollipop Chainsaw looks like so much fun, I love how wild the game looks, and the game looks visually amazing. I wish there are more colorful and fun looking games similar to Lollipop Chainsaw, she kind of reminds me of Harley Quinn. Great video! Love the fact the game is created in a toilet break lol.
