  • Hi Gang! Hubs and I took our new Tesla Model 3 on its first road trip {June 2019}, and I’m sharing everything from how we navigated our trip, what it’s like to stop more frequently or for longer periods of time, to what the actual super charge locations were like. I pieced together clips from my iPhone 8 Plus and my Instagram Stories to give a fuller picture, so please forgive some vertical footage :) Because I was mostly just along for the ride, and because I am soooo not good with details, here’s info below from Hubs about Bogart the Blue Tesla and our trip:
Our Tesla is a Model 3 Standard Range Plus with a range of 240 miles.
In an extreme stroke of luck, our Nissan LEAF was totaled the same month that Tesla started shipping orders for the lowest end $35k model. In the end, we paid just a bit more for 'plus' and the color blue. It's one of the slower models and does 0-60 in 5.3 seconds *grin*. We hope to purchase the upcoming long range Model Y suv when it becomes available.
The Navigation Plan was from www.abetterrout...
Each time we stopped to charge we entered the 'next destination' into the Tesla to see what it would suggest for charge time.
Charging Costs: Superchargers bill us 28 cents per KWh which provides just over 4 miles of range, so you could compare to gas by assuming 7 cents per mile. At $3/gallon, a regular car that gets 20mi/gal would be paying 15 cents per mile; but gasoline cost and mi/gal would certainly vary by vehicle.
When considering fuel cost, the real comparison should be your home cost of electricity. We pay 14 cents per KWh at home (includes tax) which is 3.5 cents/mi. We never use a Supercharger except on a long trip. Even on this trip, 240 miles of the trip would have been from our house at the 3.5 cents/mi rate and most of the rest was free supercharging because we had used hubby's brother's referral.
You can use my hubby’s referral link to get 1,000 free Supercharger miles on a new Tesla:

Keep in mind that you're getting into Tesla near the beginning of their development. They are still building out road trip infrastructure and still increasing charge speed. It will get better over time. One of the things I commonly hear is that people who have been with Tesla for a while now are starting to mention that they don't have enough time at stop and eat or stop and whatever now. It's gotten better over time and so when people's habits and expectations are set at a certain point, and then it gets better, they take some time to adjust. Also, if they, for whatever reason, have to swith back to a petrol car, they get range anxiety (especially on a road trip into an area with which they are unfamiliar) trying to find gas stations because it's not as convenient as the Superchargers. People in Tesla's get used to how the car integrates the charging stops and locations along with the real-time availability data into their trip planning. Gone are they days when planning a trip is necessary, you just type in the address into the computer and it does all of the planning for you. Very easy to get used to.

Agreed! We are getting ready to purchase a Tesla for me! Very excited. My hubby was sold from the get-go... I needed convinced. But after our trip, and after I took a solo trip with it, I’m sold!

I drive a 2015 Nissan LEAF, so I can only wish to have triple digit range, and a near global network of Superchargers. Heck, my car can't even charge beyond level 2 anyway. But, it's still the best car I have ever owned. 500 miles/week and problem- free for nearly 30K miles. The car will pay for itself in gas and maintenance savings by the time I get to 100K miles. I'll have to change the 1.5 quart gear box lubricant at 150K miles, so it's not expense-free, but my goodness, 150K miles and 1.5 quarts of dino-based lubricant isn't too bad. Enjoy that car, and the Model Y when you get it.

Aaron Bounds My husband drove an older LEAF, but it was totaled when my son was driving it in the spring...not his fault, the other driver crossed the line from opposite direction and hit him head on... my son walked away with a slight bruise on his face from the airbag... so no engine in his lap 😁 Safe vehicles! Anyway, I told hubby to just get the Tesla after that...I’ve had more joy watching him with that car!

"We stopped to have lunch and I was like, oh, I never finished my sentence." Why we are destined to be friends. I was always curious about the stopping but on road trips I really do like to stop every 2 hours anyway. I didn't realize they had a long range option. Interesting . . .GREAT VIDEO!

Jen Lefforge Yeah, squirrel brain sistahs 🙌 We love the slower pace actually... I really thought I’d hate it. It’s like eating the elephant in bites kinda thing. Plus meeting other enthusiastic Tesla drivers is so fun!

Hey great vid ! I’m from Indiana as well so my Q? Have you had your 3 in the cold snowy weather yet? If so how’s it do. And I have been on the fence. SR+ loaded up the way I want or a dual motor w/o FSD and in white? Thoughts?

This is aMidlifeGirl's husband... We have not had the Tesla in the snow yet; however, I had a Nissan LEAF last year and fully understand how using the heat can cut into the range. The saving grace for me is that I rarely drive more than 30-40 miles in a day and so even if heating doubled the range use (which is not possible) , it wouldn't cause any concern for me.
Your question about sticking with SR+ vs dual motor is certainly more complex. My brother has a loaded performance model with dual motor and while it's fun to drive, it honestly gives me a headache to fully accelerate a few times. My road conditions also don't really justify the need for an all-wheel drive, so I'm fine with the single motor. Concerning FSD, I had a 60-day trial and it was certainly awesome, but I also don't travel far enough or on highway enough to justify the cost.
IF, I was in your shoes and trying to decide between dual motor performance and the SR+ loaded, then I'd encourage the SR+ "loaded up"; unless you get a real thrill knowing your car can blow the doors off anything else in Northern Indiana.
Let us know what you decide.
